    Default Hello

My name is Jason Dyer. I am a freelance writer who has worked for the AP, Random House, NYC Press, various magazines and websites. I have been commissioned to do a book on the subject of "Cam Girls". I am looking to do audio or video interviews with performers ranging in age, race and background, As well as interviewing the owners of these sites and spouses of the performers.. I'm looking for what has brought these people to this profession. I was told about this website from an industry contact. From what I have seen, this site has given me an interesting look into the industry.

I don't pay for interview its agents the publisher policy. Non fiction books are legally taxing for the publisher to verify the stories.

The end result is money, but the journey and story is unique for everyone.

Oh great, another guy who wants to romanticize the simple fact that women who work in the sex industry do it for the money.

Good luck jasondyer. You are going to need it....

Idk. For a purported freelance writer your grammar is rather bad. Is English a second language for you?

    Hi Jason,

I appreciate that you'd like to write about us but there may be a few snags. First, lots of us are very tired of media distorting things for us. We're tired of media that says, "So easy a cavewoman can do it, go make you tons o cash bitchezz" and flood the market with new talent making it harder for us to make money. We're also tired of media saying, "See look! They're damaged beings worthy not of respect, but pity! I know, I talked to them!" In between these two extremes we've oft been misquoted or taken out of context and we're wary of that happening again.

Second, to any independent contractor time is money. If we take an hour out of our day to talk to you that's an hour we didn't get paid and when there are already so few hours in the day?

    Third, confidentiality.

Finally, how can you assure anyone that you're going to treat her sensitively, confidentially and that your project is going to be completed in a timely/tasteful manner? What's your track record here?

Basically, what's in it for us? You get a cool story, your boss is happy, you get paid and we get.... Even in the best of times people outside the industry do not like us. I've been a part of a lot of projects that were helmed by people who really wanted to change things, share insight on sex workers, tell "the public" who we "really are". Clearly not much has changed and I have become very jaded about it.

I don't think I'm alone here. I think a lot of cam girls also feel like they have been used for salacious stories and effect and feel like one more book or poster or "art coffee table book of labial prints" isn't going to do much more than the last 70 did.

The trend in publishing lately is that the reader wants authenticity, memoirs, self-help guides. Porn star autobiographies sell well - works about sex industry people from outsiders? Not as well if you don't already have a big name or are giving some big expose. They need to contract one of the many camgirl blogs out there - I like London Jones: http://www.mycamgirlsecrets.com/ - the product will turn out faster since months won't be spent researching.

I looked you up, unless this is a pseudonym: yes you're a writer, but the rest of it, c'mon, don't bust our balls.

It's ridiculous how these types think we are going to donate our time and energy to help them make money without being paid.

Wow didn't take him long to go away. So I guess being paid makes one jaded? I know people in many fields who will not do much unless they are paid. Personally I'm tired of these guys who think we will work for free. There used to be a jackass around me who used to pull the bs he was writing a book. In reality he was just a perv looking for a free show.

Right there with you ladies. I didn't expect him to up and disappear on us. Figured he'd rebut my points. If, in fact, he did do a book about strip clubs and it was well received, don't you think that he would have said, "well here's my track record" and then told us why he thought we should pitch in? Maybe he can't pay but the book will be distributed by a big publishing house and we'll get credit and links to our websites. Maybe he'll put our info up on his site while he works on the book, new publicity. Would have been nice to know that.

Not much of a journalist if he takes his toys and goes home at the very first hint that it's going to be more work than he thought it would be.

I mean, what did he expect? "I'm going to go talk to a group of people whom society has marginalized and forced into hiding. They'll be so eager to come out to a total stranger that they'll trip over their g-strings running into my arms!"

Yup. This is also a bad place to visit while pretending to be a writer in order to run a game on one or more strippers.

And just for future reference, any good con requires all of the surface elements to make sense in order for it to succeed.

For example, if I went into a club claiming to be a successful stock broker, I sure as hell wouldn't walk in looking like a broke bum and I would make sure to sound legit when I spoke. Similarly, if you are going to try to run the ol' "I'm a writer" gag on a stripper discussion board, you'd better be able to write better than a grade schooler, which seems not to be the case for you tiger.

Exactly. If people can back up why they are doing things people are more likely to help. I remember a while back someone was doing a research paper (I think it was a female dancer)and people helped her. It's just that most of us have seen the con artists who either aren't doing a book or are doing something to make them money but not to make others money. There was a guy near me who used to run ads that looked like actual club or party ads and they would say something like "dancers make $$$$$". Then when you'd call he'd say to meet at a restaurant or something. Ok that makes sense until you'd get there and find out it was a "book" and he wanted to see "samples" of your routine, including stripping for him in a motel room. I declined of course but what about those who thought it was going to lead to money? What if he raped someone or at the very least got a free show? That's why now if someone wants assistance I either want money, or "know" them and know it's not for money.

Guys writing books is one of the scams I've come acros often offline as well, along with photographers wanting "test shots" and don't pay, or "bachelor party services" wanting to see someone dance nude in an audition.

^Ugh gross, talk about bait and switch

The "photographers" who provide an almost nonexistent portfolio, have a click and point camera, and don't even have a studio space are the worst. I feel like they are 1/2 of Model Mayhem with the rest actually being legit

Years ago when I was starting out I got scammed by one of those guys so now I warn other women the signs of a fraud. This guy said he needed to do test shoots to see how I photographed nude. I fell for it and lo and behold he never paid me and claimed there was no work for me. This guy did have a studio but that still doesn't mean much. I should have asked to see his work. Later on when answering ads I always insisted on seeing the portfolios and never got scammed again. I later found out he was arrested for a few things, and he was a fraud.

Your grammar and prose are a bit stilted. You immediately default to the 'you're jaded, but of course you would be' chestnut, which, frankly, is unimaginative at best and doesn't indicate much insight into or familiarity with the industry or its workers. Your premise as you describe it is as worn out as an old sock: Yawn-o-Rama. What's your angle? What's your point? What do you have to say that hasn't been said already?

So, you want us to tell our stories for free so YOU can make money from retelling them, yes? Filtered through the oh-so-flattering 'of course you'd be jaded' viewpoint? Good luck.
Left the biz after more than 15 years; still miss it today. Deeply passionate about the rights of the women in it and the way it acts as a barometer of sexual health and gender-relations in our society. Committed to helping women in the industry find a sense of cultural context and feminist relevance; your health and happiness help the business - and the culture around it - evolve.

Jason, Im not sure if you're reading this, but a friend of mine has been writing a book on graveyard shift cabbies. Since most of them sleep in the day and work crazy-long shifts at night, he'd get rides in their cab and pays them like a normal customer. Most were skeptical at first, but nearly all of them gradually opened up when they saw that he was genuine, serious about the book, and respected that they needed to make a living too. A few even became friends and met him during their breaks after awhile so he wouldn't have to keep paying.

I suggest if you're serious about your book, save up and set aside a budget from your advance. Pay the girl her normal rate plus tip and fire away your questions instead of getting a show or LD. Or if you're in a SC, pay her for her time to sit with you and go though your questions. Maybe once they see that you're "for real" and not some creeper, they'll do an interview outside the club via phone or over coffee in a safe, neutral place.

But like my friend, you gotta respect them first before they'll trust and respect you.
