i use a laptop....but i never really move my computer.
i always keep it on my bed tho and i could't do that with a desktop.

^^^ do you use a separate webcam or a built in one? I was going to sell my desktop for a Pink Vaio ^.^

Laptop. Its nice because I can do shower shows and just adjust the built in camera. The only thing that sucks is that you cant see the screen and what people are typing when you tilt it down too much. An ideal combo for me would be separate webcam connected to my laptop. That would be a match made in cam heaven lol.

yup that's the one that I have! I guess I'll be getting rid of my Dell desktop asap lol thanks you guys! I just want something that's more cam flexible/less boring haha

I have a new desktop on the way, but the main reason I'm getting it is for video editing. Still, I plan on using it with a wireless keyboard/ mouse and a long cord for the monitor for camming. I would however also like to reformat my laptop and use it for camming still, after I get everything else off of it and onto the desktop. I guess I'll have to get a new router before I can do that though.
I put my C910 on a tripod (it's balancing on the camera mount as if it were a laptop screen), but I'd still like to be able to move it around the house with ease.
I think it was easier to use a laptop when I had it, but now I got a desktop built for gaming, Imma use it.
Should be okay, I never did shower shows anyway.

I use a laptop so I can move to different rooms or angles within a room. I started off just using the built in webcam but that was a nightmare as I couldn't see the screen when I tilted it below a certain angle. So now have laptop I can take to any room with a webcam that I can attach via a cord giving me pretty much limitless angles/positions to shoot from.
I'm thinking of getting a wireless mouse/keyboard as well (assuming they work with a laptop) because at the moment I find it annoying having to keep come back to the laptop if I'm out of reach
I use my desktop because it's faster and better than my current laptop, but I'll working exclusively from my laptop in a few more months.

I have a all-in-one touch screen desktop that I put on my computer chair & roll around room from room if I'm not at the computer desk.
I've had 3 laptops while camming & they are just too fragile! I don't feel limited with the all-in-one desktop except having to unplug & plug if I want to switch rooms.
I suggest that most models get any type of desktop as a back up just in case!

I was using my husbands desktop (with wireless mouse and keyboard) because we have a camcorder, so the quality was excellent, but I recently borrowed a friends webcam and hooked it up to my shitty old laptop and, I must say, I really love having the ability to move about in the apartment. I did a baking show last night, I can do shower shows now, it's pretty neat. Might still use the desktop a couple times a week though, just because it is better quality and the connection is faster.

Desktop! So new and fast I am in love with it
Yes, I'm real.
desktop...
the whole thing is so annoying to move and Imove it alot but...
laptops monitors are so tiny, I cant stand them

I think I'm just going to get really long cords for my monitor and cam and then I can go anywhere in the house pretty easily.
I've never had a desktop before, and I love everything about it. I got me a nifty little wireless keyboard with a mouse pad too. I have no wires going across my floor (to trip over, because I totally did when I had three.)
@MsStepford on Twitter!
i think that i am gonna be getting a desk top to use as backup and to use for business stuff in general, i agree that laptops are very fragile and i will continue to cam from it. so i think having both are very good options. which kinds of desk tops are best?

with an eye toward the future, 720p HD seems to be replacing 480p as the new 'standard' resolution. And 1080p HD seems to be gaining as the new 'premium' resolution. With that said ...
... you can't get resolutions higher than 480p to work properly at full frame rate via a standard USB 2.0 port. 720p will work to some degree but at a reduced frame rate. Forget about 1080p. And with extremely few exceptions, the best you're going to find on an affordable laptop is USB 2.0
... to get real HD compatibility today, you typically need an analog HD camera and a video processor card. This in turn requires a card slot, which desktops provide but laptops do not.
... you can also get real HD performance via a USB 3.0 HD cam, although these are just starting to come onto the market. Also, since Microsoft has announced full USB 3.0 support under Windows 8, some external HD analog video to USB 3.0 processors are now coming onto the market ( meaning you no longer need a card slot for a video processor ).
You CAN find a handful of laptops with USB 3.0 capability already. And for HD processing requirements you need a fast dual core processor at minimum, which can also be found in some laptops already. As long as these two features are included, going the laptop route shouldn't be 'locking any doors' re future webcamming.

I'm really debating getting a desktop but so far my toshiba laptop seems to be working for me![]()

^^^ again there's no question that just about any newer laptop is going to be able to handle 480p streaming video resolution ... which still comprises the bulk of webcam sales. However, it's also a fact that some girls and some webcam hosts have already moved to 720p HD ... as well as a fact that an increasing number of 'paying customers' are expecting 720p HD. And a few 'upscale' girls and webcam hosts are offering 1080p True HD ... which reportedly results in major earnings.
So the real question is about the wisdom of buying a new laptop computer today that isn't able to handle 720p HD ... at a time when 720p HD may become a 'necessity' re acceptable levels of paid webcam sales next year.
