Default Questions about Moving, camper, hotel, new apartment...

    Hello,

I have a small truck and I am planning on finding a new place to live outta-state. I am planning on stripping but open to other options. I mainly just want to leave this area and find a new home. So anyway.. I found a camper thing to put in the back of my little truck and it is only a hundred dollars but you can sleep in it, it has a little door and windows. It is basically a camper shell, just a shell but with places to sleep and lights.

I am thinking for a hundred dollars I can't go wrong but if I find a place to live it will become an inconvenience plus it will be harder to see to drive, backing up and stuff.

Since I have a little truck and no place to put my things this would give me a safe place to put my things while traveling. Any thoughts? It is only a hundred dollars O_O ! I hate having a truck though, I wish I just had a normal car. But I bought my truck new and I know there is nothing wrong with it.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

If you did find a place to live couldnt you just take the camper shell off and put it in storage? Then driving would be easier.

Yes, for a hundred dollars I could just push it off into a Walmart parking lot.

    Just kidding

I would need pictures of the camper thing.

I say for right now its a beginning. If you don't like it then start planning for what you really want to do. If you don't like the truck start looking at cars you would like. If you do find a apartment, you can sell the camper or store it for a later time.

For me I want a bigger car, mid suv type and if I can have a teardrop camper for travels.

I've truck camped and stripped in 4 states. 5 states actually if you count my two day fuck up in Montana. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I have a similar set up ( pick up truck and shell ). For comfort, my set up was a carpet kit with padding and then a self inflating camping mat on top of that. Whatever mat brand I have, it is really awesome and I'll check the brand if you want. I would stay in the truck the majority but then also at hostels or hotels. Simply not announcing that it was my truck always worked out just fine. I kind of liked that my truck didn't look like it had someone staying in it too. It just looks like a regular truck with shell and not a camping vehicle from the outside.
I'm assuming you are aiming to do this in the southern states once Mid-Nov. hits ? I would not recommend this for winter obviously.

Thank you. I hadn't given serious thought to when/where but you raise some very practical points (Winter/cold). Mainly I was planning on the road trip to my new destination and then figuring out where I want to stay/work. Not so much a travel thing but could turn into one. Mainly I want to get away from here and find a new home.

    .

It is like one of those normal toppers, or shells or whatever you call them except it looks like a small camper that people would camp in and I think there are beds on either side but it is small. There is no toilet or stove or anything like that.

I might be biased, but I think it's a good set up. I don't really think the camper is needed because the camper is going to be clunkier and harder to store. You can just leave the shell on the truck if you get a normal shell and you'll always be able to pull into parking garages ect. if your truck isn't raised. I feel safer driving with more visibility .... but I'm sure you'd be fine really either way.

I've slept in my car with my dog in New Mexico, and Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas during the winter. Very cold. But doable. You'd have a lot more room with the shell, and because of that you could be a lot more cushioned, and have more blankets. You could even have a battery operated heating blanket or else just kit out with a sleeping bag that is good down to zero degrees (not that it should be, but that way you'll definitely be warm.)

Also, having a shell, you'll be able to pee in the middle of the night in a pan if you need to, and then just toss it out. I hated having to wake up and pee really bad. Thank God I finally got to the point my last trip of just squatting on the bottom rim of the passenger door side floor board and peeing on the ground. It saved me so much time, and really wasn't an inconvenience since I chose more private places.

Also, what are you going to have for a weapon?

Luckily, the truck should help your privacy, but still-- when you wake up in the middle of the night to a strange sound...you're going to want something at hand even if that sound turns out to be nothing.

Your truck has a window you can fit through right, so if you run into trouble while sleeping you can shimmy through to the driver's seat and get the fuck out of there?

First question ... just how small is the bed on your 'small truck'. Hopefully it's at least 7 feet long. Otherwise you'll feel like a sardine. But if you have a 7 ft + truck bed, you can't go wrong with a $100 bed cap !

Next issue if you're seriously considering sleeping in your truck bed / cap. Have the cap windows professionally blacked out to the point where no inside light can get out and no outside light can get in. Since a cap provides essentially zero physical security against a would-be assailant, it's imperative that you maintain as low of a 'public profile' as possible. This is also important for other reasons if you're going to be dancing at night and sleeping during the day.

Next issue if you're seriously considering sleeping in your truck bed / cap. Look into adding a deep cycle 12v battery and a dual battery isolator. This will allow you to use 12v DC power ... or even small amounts of 120v AC power using a small inverter ... without fear that you can't start your truck due to running your one and only battery dead. I actually have used this setup in conjunction with a 12v electric blanket, a laptop AC adapter with wireless internet, 12v cell phone charger, 12v cooler, 12v 2 cup coffee maker, and even a tiny TV.

And depending on where you plan on travelling to, there will probably be 'campgrounds' available ... where for $10 a night you can pull in your truck 'camper' and get some actual security, plus access to a bathroom and shower, plus access to your own picnic table and fireplace ( which, in conjunction with your fold-up canopy to go over the picnic table and your propane camp stove, will allow you to cook at least some of your own meals ). Sometimes you also get access to laundry facilities.

While it's certainly possible to simply pull into a WalMart parking lot, or pull off the road in a desolate spot, then climb into the truck bed and crash, I wouldn't recommend doing so these days. Certainly not on a 'regular basis' in the same city / area, since both local cops and local perps may quickly take notice if your truck is spotted around town on more than one day / night.

Well, my Dad came and helped me get the camper shell thingee. I was thinking it was like a self-contained unit with a floor and walls but it is essentially just a shell. So the cold bottom and sides of the truck metal are there and then it sits on top of the bed rails. It seemed pretty water damaged but it was a hundred dollars. The outside is aluminum and the inside is wood paneling. It has tinted windows though not limo tint. I am planning on getting curtains for it, probably dark brown or black. It smells like cat piss inside too but I washed it today and will probably put a coat of stain on the inside.

The deep cycle battery is a great idea but I am not skilled in that sort of thing. Basically I just need a protective cover for my bed so I can haul my shit down the road and maybe spend a couple of nights sleeping in the back. I do have a military style mummy bag and an air mattress. The bed is six foot but that is enough for me. I am planning on getting an apartment when I find a nice place to work, etc. Basically I am just relocating, reinventing myself, starting over.

I do have a .38 pistol. The gun shop guys told me it is okay to have a concealed pistol in your car because your car is imminent domain or whatever but I don't know if that is state to state. The shell thing is like three or five inches taller than the top of the truck cab and it has marker lights on it and lights on the inside so I will have to figure out how to hook it up. I am not sure if I should tuck the wires on the inside of the bed or on the outside of the bed. They are located on the driver side front of the shell.

I did a lot of work on it today, cleaning and scraping the bad foam stuff off the bottom, pulling apart the door and using silicone caulk to make it so it won't leak. The whole thing seemed to have been leaking really badly and some of the wood is rotten. But it seems like a great deal at a hundred bucks. I have never really moved anywhere so this will be an adventure. I was going to buy fabric at Walmart and curtain rods for the curtains. It does look nice on the outside but it looks like something someone might be sleeping in.

Oh it doesn't have any beds in it and it is only as wide as the truck is. Maybe five inches taller than the truck. It is like a camper shell only made of aluminum and wood. It is going to be pretty nice.

Thank you for the great replies O_O !
