Default Tooth ache/no insurance-can it wait?

So today I suddenly developed this awful toothache in my front tooth.

I've had a cavity in this tooth before and had it filled, but now it's aching and throbbing.

I got a little mirror out to look at it, and the back of the tooth is all brownish, but I don't know if that's a cavity or if it's the old filling.

My dental insurance was supposed to kick in November 1, but there was an error with the paperwork, so it's been delayed. I will hopefully be covered by Black Friday.

I'm trying to decide if I just suck it up and pay out of pocket for an exam, X-ray, and probably a filling or root canal...or wait until my insurance finally kicks in.

I can manage the pain, but I'm scared that the cavity or whatever this is will get worse if I wait.

I am terrified of it getting so bad that I'll have to lose the tooth, as there's no way I could afford an implant to replace it.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any dental hygienist students who can help give me advice?

It can wait, for the amount of time you stated. I have a molar that's doing this & I think the nerve calcified because it went from frequent sharp pain to none at all.

Take some painkillers and smack some clove oil (Eugenol) on it...

Gargle with some hydrogen peroxide to stop the infection till you can to the doc.

I had something similar where there was previous filling in the tooth. After awhile the seal on the filling became faulty and a new cavity formed underneath it. I got massive tooth pain one night at work and went to the dentist the next day. Unfortunately pain is often a sign that the infection is advanced, and in my case I needed a root canal. Don't wait too long.

Is there a dental school near you? I've started going to one in my town. The work is about 50% less then a regular dentist.
