Default no power for 9 days

Hi, being a resident of New England, just got thru nearly 9 days with no power. Even my workplace had no power for an entire week. Luckily, I'm a big believer in 2012 possibly coming about, so we installed a wood stove about 3 years ago and we were able to keep the house warm at least. But no running water, or phone and internet for nearly the whole time. I kind of enjoyed it except it was like being on a farm with constant work, heating water for sponge baths, starting the cars to charge the phone and run the modem and router. We were melting snow for water initially also. After a week, the issue of laundry came up and I started using the bath water to wash underwear and socks. The devastation of the trees is incredible as you drive down the streets.

Yes I had no power either being in CT. My family went to NYC because all the hotels were booked and luckily a friend of mine had power in New Britain and I was able to cam there. Things like this definitely make you grateful for the small things and hopefully this wont happen again!

I was pretty lucky in the Boston area. Lots of trees down but no power loss. Western and Southern Mass did not fair so well. As with CT some folks had no power for well over a week. One of my favs lives near Hartford and went about 9 days without power as well.

The power companies are taking a lot of heat for this but, honestly, they hold most of the cards. It's happening way too often and the outages are lasting for far too long.

Ahhh ... a subject that I have WAY too much experience with, both while living in upstate NY and now living way south of the border. I can't tell you now many times that my old faithful Honda generator kept life 'bearable' ... from running my well pump for water, to running my freezer to keep from losing $1000's of dollars in frozen foods, to running my furnace in the dead of winter.

It just so happens that one of my acquaintances from New York got sent to Mass to help with the power restoration after the recent storm. His major observation was that the outage was far worse than it otherwise needed to be because the local power company was not allowed to trim back trees near overhead power lines. Whether true or not, this is going to be used as an excuse by local power companies.

He also mentioned the ridiculous amount of money that the local power companies in MA, CT etc. had to pay to bring extra crews in from Canada, NY, and many other US states in addition to the basic costs for new power poles, new wire, new insulators etc. This is going to translate into a huge rate increase in the near future.

This has been the crux of the debate over blame. The power companies are actually being accused of not spending the money to trim back the trees and the power companies are, in turn, blaming it on lack of cooperation with various municipal agencies. Lots of finger pointing. For the record, we are dealing with several power companies and, of course, dozens of cities and towns but the over-all issues are the same. What's interesting is that several small, publicly-owned power companies made it through the storm with minimal power loss and very short repair times.

My friend in the business pointed out this as well. It's actually to be expected, since the setup of all of these small 'municipal' power companies involves one or two high voltage feed points off regional transmission lines ( and the high voltage transmission lines get first priority for restoration from the major regional utilities ), plus just a few miles of 'street lines' within their comparatively small service territories ( most of which is town / city streets with fewer trees overhanging their 'street lines' ). It's a far different story for a major regional utility to restore power to a small town that does NOT have a high voltage transmission line feed of its own, and is thus dependent on miles and miles of 'street lines' running along secondary roads ( with a million overhanging trees ) to bring lower voltage power into the area from an adjacent city.

I actually asked my friend in the business why it is that the municipal power companies have high voltage feeds while lots of the towns and villages that are served by the large regional utilities do not. He pointed out that, unless a high voltage power line right of way was obtained, and a high voltage power line was actually built 30+ years ago, the environmental regulations, state and local permitting etc. required to build a new high voltage transmission line today are extremely burdensome. As a result, regional power companies have chosen to avoid the hassle and simply extend / add medium voltage 'street lines'. But a byproduct of this choice is that those medium voltage 'street lines' are far more vulnerable to events from the recent storm, to drunk drivers clipping power poles i.e. greatly reduced system reliability overall.

Back to the main topic, in both upstate NY and especially down here south of the border, potentially long duration power interruptions are a regular part of life. As a result, people set themselves up with backup generators, with a source of water that can be powered by a generator ( note municipal water depends on having electric power to run the system's water pumps ), with a source of heating / cooking fuel that does not depend on electric power ( note utility natural gas depends on having electric power to run the system's natgas compressors ), etc. As the recent northeast power outage illustrates all too clearly, city / suburban residents wind up being totally screwed if utility electricity ( thus utility natgas and utility water ) fails. All I can say is that, in reality, it was a damn good thing this didn't happen in the peak of summer or the dead of winter ! If that had happened, the death toll and property damage total would have been much much higher.

I heard rumors that the extra crews from the last big storm were not paid, didn't receive their paycheck, and therefore were stalling and not willing to come out and fix the issue til finally they said they'd send out their checks. I've heard that this was actually mentioned on one of the news stations. I wonder if that's a big reason too?

BF got sent to New England to work on the power restoration. Since we've been living together, he's been sent to Florida a bunch of times, South Carolina, Virginia and now Connecticut. One year, he went to Florida five different times! Of course, NC sees him the most. He spent most of August and September working down east after Irene. I miss him when he's gone, but it does make for lots of fun when he comes home!

Yeah, I ordered a small generator so at least I can run a microwave.
I heard the rumor about the crews not being paid also - but CL&P denies it.
The biggest issue is the poor coordination of giving the out of state crews fuel and jobs to do. Many were sitting in parking lots doing nothing for hours! Ugh.
The President of CL&P just resigned also.
    Thanks for the support.
