Default Women of Color: How do you get rid of dark spots in bikini area from razor bumps???

Ok so Ive been using Nair down there for the last 6 months because razors just break me out so bad and its been much better as far as fewer bumps. However, the the black spots are still there from previous shaving horror experiences and wondering how the hell do you get rid of them??? I know that darker skinned women are more prone to hyperpigmentation but Ive seen other women whos bikini area doesnt look nearly as bad as mine, any advice or remedies. Thanks

I'm not a woman of color, but I've worked for a beauty supply for 10 years so I've seen this problem a lot.

There's a lot of treatments you can try - cocoa butter and vitamin E oil are the most natural, but they work slow. You can try a fade cream like Ambi, a lot of people swear by it. Or try a scar cream like Mederma.

Other than that, you'll want to gently exfoliate the area regularly, including before you remove hair (if you're using Nair, probably 12-24 hours before) and then 24 hours after hair removal. This will promote cell turnover so the marks fade faster, plus keeps your pores clear so you don't get bumps. Also try using a bump preventative liquid with alpha hydroxy acid after hair removal to keep pores clear.

    Hope that helps!

i know what u mean! i used to get them all the time. now that I use better hair removal techniques I don't get anymore but still have some scarring from old ingrown hairs. mederma & vitamin e oil seem to work but very slowly. I'm going to try a dermatologist to see if I can get a prescription for a stronger fade cream. I have heard that mild peels can be used (administered by a doc of course) & work well but I'm a bit apprehensive to try that.

What vitamin E oil do you ladies use? I want to try a new brand.

To anyone using Nair, try the cooling gel in the blue tube....Ah-mazing! I stopped using Nair years ago becauss of the terrible smell. After I moved and could not get ahold of any Avon reps to buy my fav removal creme from, I tried this and it is so easy. No terrible smell, and washes off hands and body super easy.

You're hyper-pigmentating because of chemical irritation at the follicles. You can try an occasional chemical peel. Also, order some hydroquinone from australia (cheaper, non-prescription, higher concentration) but beware it may be carcinogenic. Same stuff that's in over-the counter bleach creams (ambi, porcelana, etc).

Best bet may just be Dermablend or other waterproof coverup.

check your razor strip!!! i have some type of reaction to aloe vera... somethings with aloe im ok w while others make me itch ect.. once i stopped using razors with aloe strips.. i had less bumps the dark color went away.. also to help bumps use hydrocortizone ointment not the white cream after shaving...keeps the itching and bumps away...

also in the african stores or beauty supplies get black soap its lightens up dark areas as well
still here.... just in another chapter..

so a mild chemical peel is ok for the "mons pubis" area? I would try it but idk if a dermatologist would do one down there or would a plastic surgeon be more likely to grant that request? If its safe I'd be willing to try it because chemical peels gave amazing results on my face.

Pure vitamin E oil should help, I suggest TKOSkin.com
Tonya makes her products in house and she also travels the world in search of raw ingredients...it's a little on the expensive side but well worth the money. Vitamin E oil is know for fading dark spots and getting rid of stretch marks. I am using it on my bikini area as well due to razor burn and hyper-pigmentation. =/
