    Default Serious hair advice needed

I want to change up my hair for stripping because I'm just not satisfied with how it looks now (and there's also the recognition OTC factor).

Currently my hair is naturally pin straight, shoulder length, and black. Problem is, it's SO thin. I'd like to have bangs to cover my fivehead, but because my hair is so fine they never look right. I want a style that would be more flattering in the club, thicker, and longer. Maybe Bettie Page bangs, or something side swept? IDK the first thing about styling hair.

Option 1: I thought about getting a sewn-in weave but as a white girl with super fine/brittle hair, I don't think this is a great idea. I feel like it'd look alright but I wouldn't know how to maintain it properly.

Option 2: I could wear a wig to work. I don't think I'd want to wear a full lace front because of all that gluing, but a regular wig might suffice. I'm afraid of it flying off on stage, or falling off if I customer plays with my hair.

Option 3: Clip-in extensions. These look viable but I want ones that don't look phony. If anyone knows a good brand that is reasonably priced, let me know! I don't have the funds for braided in, super luxe extensions right now.

Well, if your hair is very thin then you need some professional help. I will recommend you see a trichologist.

Oh girl I didn't mean to give you the idea that I'm losing my hair, or that's it's *abnormally* thin. :] It's just been very fine/flat all my life. Certainly not lusciously stripper-ish.

Well, thank you! Are there any volumizing products you could recommend? My hair definitely has issues holding a curl or staying "big."

I have very naturally thin (wavy) black hair & I use clip in extensions to give my hair volume/length. As long as you match the color well, it won't look fake (even if they are not great quality extensions/real hair no one will be able to tell under the club lights. I just replace them when they start to look even the slightest bit shabby). If your hair is naturally straight, you could always try curling it as well.

I didn't even think about club lighting. I was worried extensions that were a little more budget-friendly would look unnatural, but I'm not standing out in bright daylight either.

I have thin hair too and use clip in extensions to give it a bit more volume. I personally buy dolce hair extensions, it's real hair and fairly cheap and easy to style. She's located in Australia but I'm pretty sure they're an ebay store http://www.dolcehair.com.au/

I love clip in extensions! I buy the 8 piece set from hellogorgeous.com. they're super thick and look fantastic.

Also, if you just want to style your hair without the addition of extensions, I use a few different techniques.

    1. If you go the bangs route, it can look GREAT if you're going for a pinup girl style. I had shoulder length dark hair with bangs last month. To get your bangs to lay flat, blow dry them and spray them down.

    2. For big hair that looks thick, I tease it with a course bristled brush; I have a teasing comb, but I recently discovered how great the brush is. Tease the undersides of your hair by lifting 2 inch sections; simply brush backwards to form a sort of tangle. Repeat and focus on the crown of your head and/or the sides; you can also practice framing your face. Be careful; this can be damaging to your hair so make sure your hair is already healthy AND condition a lot.

    3. Root lifting powder. Put it in your hair and fluff up your roots; it's really easy. Then spray.

    4. Round brush and blow dryer. Wrap your hair around a large barrel round brush and blow dry sections, then brush it out. Follow with root lifter and spray.

    5. Curls! They're great to do something different and will give your hair lift and volume. If you have long-ish or medium length bangs, wrap the entire length of your bangs around a medium sized barrel to form one single curl; make sure the hair curls toward your face. This will give you the kind of classic pinup look. Or, for a sexy bedhead, curl loose waves with a larger barrel.

    6. Instead of straightening your hair flat, flip the hair upward for a feathery layered look. Works especially well if you have layered hair.

    7. During bike week, I rocked a faux hock. Google it.

    8. Pony tails are very classy if placed at the nape of your neck; not meant to be done too often but looks really nice.

    9. Bump it! If you have longer bangs, try a "snooki" style bump, but keep it classy. I really liked the bump Fergie wore at an awards show; google it! I also do this with a bunch of pins instead of that gaudy white clip.

    10. Getting a broad cut will make your hair appear thicker; next time you go for a trim, skip the layers.

These are all things that I do to make my hair look thicker; I, too, suffer from very very thin hair.

If it's brittle, ALWAYS condition and put something in it to prevent heat damage.

    Hope this helps...good luck!

Bumble & bumble makes a great thickening product, heard raves about it.

Henna and cassia will actually thicken each strand of hair by coating the hair shaft. The downside is, if you don't use the right type of henna, it will make it hard for you to go back to using conventional hair dye. Be sure to use "body quality henna." Its the purest form. It is a dye, so you will achieve a reddish tint. Visit longhaircommunity.com for more information.

You can also use velcro hair rollers. These are amazing for adding volume to your hair from the root. Heat is not necessary either, but I do like to blast my rolled hair with a blow dryer for extra volume. I got a pack of Conair ones at Walmart that came in various sizes for about $10 but you can pretty much get them anywhere.

Wow, F_G, thanks for all the ideas! I'm definitely going for bangs, it'll just be a matter of getting them to stay in place. I'm also going to pick up a set of hot rollers so I can do something cute with my hair without a lot of styling knowledge.

My hair is not thick. My favorite way to style my hair is with hot rollers. If you wait until they cool the curls should hold. I use big rollers. My hair is also colored and highlighted. Because it is damaged it holds styles better:-/

Because my hair thin-ish, I have been reluctant to use clip ins... I'm afraid that they will pull too hard on chunks of hair, like be too heavy and risk pulling out/damaging more hair.

I have had salon extentions 3 times. The best were the microclips, but they were super $$$$.

i have very fine hair as well. i used to wash it before work and use mousse before blow drying upside down to achieve volume. i found that what works best for me is leaving my hair unwashed if i am going in to work and then using a dry shampoo spray (tigi or tresemme are my favorites), which soaks up the oils in your hair and makes it feel thick. then i straighten and tease it with tons of hairspray.
