Default How did you learn pole?

I need to step my pole game up. Right now, I do just enough to get by. Typically, I don't do any pole work at all, unless the rotation is short and I need to switch things up a bit. I know that it probably won't make me any more money, but I think it looks cool and I like it!

I can take a weekly class...which will cost around $100/month.
I can order Studio Veena ... which is $99 for a YEAR.
I can take one-on-one lessons from a girl in our club who competes nationally...she charges $35/hour.
I can just watch other girls and practice on my own. Which is FREE.. but seems dangerous.

    Soooo... how did you learn?

I practiced at the club with very basic spins and transitions; I just watched the other girls and followed them. When I was stepping up to more advanced aerials, I stayed after work and had a girl teach me/spot me; most won't charge for an actual session but will show you how it's done. Eventually, I bought a pole at home (great investment) and watched tons and tons of youtube videos.

I don't think it's very hard to learn, but it's a pretty intense workout so make sure you get your strength up and stretch on a regular basis before you try anything too advanced. Good luck!

Ask a few of the nice girls who play on the pole to show you the easiest tricks tell them you ordered a pole and need some tips, i always show the girls stuff when its slow....at one of my clubs....and order an xpole....on xpole.com they are the best try and get the one thats a little bit more money its skinnier but soo much easier to learn on.....and use youtube videos, and my best advice for everyone is to record yourself! use a video camera....i use my macbook pro video on my computer and i film myself....this way you can see for yourself if you look completly un sexy ... lol

Other....I learned one or two things by watching videos and practicing on slow nights at the club. Decided I wasn't making any extra money by doing pole tricks, it didn't suit my persona and it wasn't worth my time and the bruising. Quit pole tricks and haven't done anything on the pole but lean against it in the last 3 or 4 years.

sorry that probably wasn't that helpful but pole is not for everyone.

I originally started with Studio Veena, then went to one-on-one training where I basically started over again to correct my form. Studio Veena is a great community, and she has some videos on transitions and floorwork that might be helpful, as not all teachers get that into that aspect, but unless you're really good at following video instruction, it might not be all that beneficial. Without someone there, you have no idea if you're actually doing it right or look good, and if you can't get something, a teacher can usually find a way to break it down or explain it in a different way. I would maybe get the month-long subscription to Studio Veena just to check out the transitions/floorwork, but I don't recommend trying to learn everything from there. Just use it to maybe post questions or a video of you trying to do something and asking for feedback. I've done that, and gotten good responses that helped me make a spin look much better. Other than that, I recommend some sort of in-person instruction. It's faster and easier than trying to do it on your own. I really like my one-on-one classes because we can work on whatever I'm in the mood for.

Plus everyone learns differently....I tried paying a girl for one-on-one lessons and it was super frustrating, because I have to learn on my own. I learn by trial and error; you might be better off following someone's instructions, so maybe try a few different things and figure out what works best before you subscribe to anything

Practicing on stage 2 (closed off during dayshift), asking girls to help me when I have questions. Being in excellent shape from yoga and hooping helped learn fast...

When I switched to a club with girls who were waaaay more advanced on the pole I got better faster because I knew what was possible and could watch them and break down the moves.

I'd love to take some classes when I move to the states. I feel like they would offer much needed input at this point, lol

Watching is one of the best ways to learn, I think. I've always enjoyed going to the circus to get more ideas for pole tricks...too bad it is only on isand once a year=( lol

Practicing on quiet nights then eventually got a pole in my house and just watched pole dancing clips over and over. The only time I've hurt myself was actually at a class 6 weeks ago (but had nothing to do with the class, just coincidence/bad luck).

One-on-one lessons can be great if they're a good teacher, if not it's a waste of time and money, does she teach a lot? If you happened to live in North Alberta I'd offer to teach you

polejunkies.com is apparently another good website to learn from, not sure how much it is though.

Plain old trial and error during my stage sets at work. Each shift I would pick one move that I wanted to work on when I had less of an audience.

I learned completely on my own. The day before I auditioned, I went to a park by my house and used the poles on the swingset to practice! Lol. Then once I started working I would just try new moves and think, "wow, I didn't know I could do this!" And on Sundays we don't open until late so I'd get ready and play around onstage until customers came in, and taught myself some pole tricks then too. Now I'm the best pole dancer at my club

    YouTube videos --- I'm a beast now

I just started taking online lessons at PremierPoleOnline.com, which is brand new and doesnt have nearly as many videos as StudioVeena yet.
Rhiannan Nichole (premier pole owner) is an amazingly, beautiful dancer - and that's the style I like.
She focuses more on polished tricks that look graceful... I get more compliments for doing mediocre pole work that looks FLAWLESS than girls who break it down and it just looks like shit... no offense haha

I also had to work very hard to break the habit of kicking up. Using your arms and abs is a necessary skill for just about all advanced tricks; you can't always rely on the strength in your legs. Right now I'm working on perfecting my aysha and jade split, so no legs involved. All arms and abs.

I learned both by practicing during slow times as well as having one of the other dancers show me some tricks. I haven't done any pole tricks in years and recently was considered taking some pole classes to re learn what I may have forgotten.

i learned at first from watching girls at work, then just kinda messed around with my personal boundaries. then this girl got in my face with a competition which i didnt want to do, said that i was good but i would get 2nd. so all this crazy drama came out of it. i took first then held on to the title for three years before i had a baby and got a boob job. funny thing is, im out of work right now because i sprained my wrist really bad doing a very basic pole trick.

For my first few years of dancing, I was self taught. I would just watch other girls and learn. I've always been an athletic girl anyway, so I caught on fairly quick. If not the best, i was always one of the stronger pole dancers in where I worked.

Just over a year ago, I started taking lessons at a studio. I have to admit, I doubled my potential and skills within a couple of weeks. I have a pole at home and I've learned things from youtube as well. The advantage to that is that I have unlimited time on my pole to try to figure things out & practice from class.

I've had one "one on one" session with an award winning pole cat. Again, I learned a lot. I had an upper shoulder injury, but she got me to learn my shoulder mount. It was expensive, but very much worth. If I could afford it, I would do it more often.

Sorry to hear about your wrist. I'm totally with you right now. I actually tweaked my wrist picking up my 17 lb. cat But I know it wasn't Pantera, it was over use of my right hand. I can do some tricks with my weak side, so I'm practicing that now. It starts to get better, but then I hurt it again learning to climb up-side-down. It got better. Then I did a back bend and hurt it again.

I'm taking a few days off

I hope you get heal fast!

    I voted "one-on-one w/ a pro".
I picked up a couple basic spins from youtube, but they didn't feel quite right and I wasn't able to advance. I signed up for a class, but I was the only one who showed up for that particular class. She immediately taught me what I was doing wrong with the basic spins (I was kind of jumping onto the pole instead of letting my momentum carry me around so I could just "fall" into the spin), and we were able to move onto more advanced stuff. By the end of the 2 hour class, I was doing inverted spins.

    It was totally worth it.

That improved my strength a lot so when I tried to do other tricks later, they came a lot easier.
So true! Repeating tricks you know will build up your strength then when it's perfect you realise you can transition from it to another or do a harder variation.

YouTube is an invaluable source of pole dancing vids! There are Alethea Austin vids I've watched hundreds of times to learn tricks.

I've had both classes and one-on-ones and they sucked balls... it's just so far from how I'd actually dance at the club. I wish I could get a pole at home, only way to learn it well IMO

Learned through trial and error, watching other girls at work and watching youtube videos. There's a good pole community on youtube and some girls will give you advice on tricks if asked.
