Thumbs up Perms! Give me advice....

I naturally have wavy-ish straight hair around my crown area, but around the nape of my neck and forehead, I have spirals like Shakira. Around my temple area, the hair is completely straight! The rest of it is just slightly wavy. WTF? I feel like my hair is fine, thin to medium, however stylists have told me my actual strands are more coarse, and my hair is 100% average thickness.

I want to have all over spirals with tons of volume from the root, like Shakira. I want my hair to naturally curl up like that when it gets wet, so I can air dry it into spirals (with product and a diffuser) or I can straighten it if I want, and it will still look shiny and sleek like a Pantene commercial, not that coarse wavy-ish straight hair that's obviously super curly. I've done some research, and I believe a cold perm would be best for this, definitely not a digital perm.

I dye my hair with a demi dye and volume 10 developer about every two months (This one: http://www.sallybeauty.com/on/demand...Burgundy+Brown with this developer: http://www.sallybeauty.com/ion-devel...cgid=Hair05-06) I've also had some ombre highlights put in a few months ago using watered down bleach, I color over those but they still remain lighter than the rest of my hair, which I love. I've noticed zero damage from the highlights. My hair is in amazing condition, way above average. I am about to buy new hair and make some clip ins, and I am thinking about dying and perming the extension hair as well.

    Here are my questions:

Is this unrealistic? Am I at more risk frying my hair than achieving my desired result? Should I just buy a conical curling iron and spend hours doing it that way?

With the extensions, should I dye first then perm or vice versa? And, should I go ahead and touch up my color before I perm or wait until after? The demi seems to condition my hair and make it shiny and healthy rather than rough it up and make it porous like permanent dyes do.

I do realize that I can braid my hair wet, do a sock bun, etc etc, but that's not exactly the look I want, because when I do those, my hair is just a giant zig zag frizz ball because of my natural texture. I want defined spiral ringlets (like Shakira!)

I'm in Puerto Rico right now, and I went to a very Puerto Rican local non touristy salon in Santurce, and the woman there told me that she could do a non damaging perm that consists of painting on some liquid, then curling it with a curling iron, and I couldn't wash it for 4 days, but it would last a few months. I have no idea what this is...

Any advice or input ladies? Gracias!

I have naturally curly hair but I use to spiral perm it years ago because I liked it super spiral like sarah jessica parker- shakira. I don't know what perms are popular now but I used matrix and redkin and they were fine and my hair was solid high lift blonde back then. I don't know what the new techniques are today never heard of what that lady's doing since back then they just wrapped it straight up and down instead of sideways. You can buy spiral curled hair for clip ins that's what I would do instead of the trouble of perming it, trying to get it to match your hair.

    Don't do it!!!

I was at my stylist this week, and she mentioned that the towels stunk because someone had washed them with perm towels.

So I asked her if people still got perms these days and she said that they do like 6 a year now, mostly old ladies. She said that they really try to discourage people from getting perms because of the damage and resulting frizziness. She said that the vast majority of people who get them seriously regret it.

I would advise against it as well. Any process where you are subjecting your hair to so much damaging heat and chemical is a bad idea.

I will start with the extension issue first. It is always your best bet to dye your real hair first and then either buy extensions to match or try to dye the extensions to match as closely as possible. If your trying to lighten darker extensions it will most likely not work, but you can usually sucessfully darken extensions. I permed several mannequins in hair school and they all turned out like utter shit ie not able to even brush them they got so frizzy and clumpy so dont even bother I am sure the result will be the same and you dont wanna ruin them, expensive!

I would also really reccomend not getting a perm. Alot of people get perms thinking you can just wash and go but there is still quite a bit of styling that goes into the look daily. Perms are forever untill your new hair grows out and they are quite damaging and could turn out frizzy or get frizzy overtime. People I know that have ended up getting perms end up using hot tools to straighten their hair constantly and the mixture of those things are not gonna leave you with the silky smooth pantene locks you still desire lol.
My solution to you is this. Those styrofoam bendy rods! In order for volume at the top you will need to overdirect them its all in the way you set ( im sure there are youtube tutorials about this ) Dry hair half way and sleep on them or I believe you can find portable small hooded dryers on EBAY for pretty cheap so just buy one and sit under it for 30 mins.

Oh and also I am presuming she is talking about some kind of smoothing treatment like Brazilian blowout type deal that washes out overtime. If your interested def get the name and do research first!

^^ I can't guarantee, but I think alisha meant curlers like these.

I use those when I feel like putting some effort into giving my hair volume. I leave them overnight on freshly washed hair. I brush it out in the morning for soft waves, though. My hair doesn't hold very well normally, but when they set overnight it does!

Yep! I meant those. If you have a Sallys Beauty Supply near you you can get them or I would even try dollar stores or Wal Mart you don't need to buy them online, they will be very cheap like afew bucks. To get spirals youll have to wrap them different then for volume so just the volume way in the crown I am going out right now but I will try to find a youtube tutorial that shows what I mean later.
And as MistyRose said those curls will not fall out with a wet to dry set like that, amazing hold! Oh also I would use some product for curls as well. And when you take the rods out I would not brush out since you want the spirals just run your fingers thru them and define the curls.

I use a conical iron on my hair and I love it. Once you get the hang of it it's not so bad. I can prob do my whole head in about 15 mins if I rush. I do loose waves with it.. More like a giselle type look but I think it's easy enough to do smaller tighter ringlets with a smaller barrel and keeping the hair in tighter winding close together. Maybe try that first since it's not perm.

I wonder if that liquid keratin solution used for Brazilian keratin treatments can also be used to perm. So instead of flatironing your hair, yog could curl it with a curling iron, since the solution does not relax the curl pattern, just smooths the cuticle....

Last time I got keratin I asked this and the girl who did my hair said yes.

I don't understand.... if you used a curling iron instead of a flat iron, wouldn't that create curls without frizz? I mean, the only reason it straightens hair is because it's used in conjunction with a flat iron.

The Brazilian blowout doesnt really straighten hair either. It can a somewhat but not really, mainly just adds shine, smoothes frizz, as well as cutting blow dry time in half. And also they claim it helps your hair (I cant confirm or deny whether its true ), but there has also been a huge issue recently safety wise of when the heat is initially put on the hair to seal it in a cancer causing formaldehyde gas is released into the air.

I actually already know all this about keratin treatments, I've had two done over the past three years, QOD Gold and Coppola. What I want to know is, like Discuntent said, after applying the keratin solution, using a curling iron in place of a flat iron would in essence be like perming your hair. So that after you got it wet, it would "remember" those curls?
