    Default A few exercise questions

    1. I want to start a stretching routine every day to get my flexibility back. Should I do this before or after a workout? I know it's important to do a little stretching before and after to warm up and cool down, but if you're doing a whole yoga-esque flexibility regimen, where would it fit better? Or does it not make any difference?

    2. Once I start to get really hot, I feel like I'm gonna die. I just can't keep going. But if I aim a fan on my face while I'm working out, I can keep going for a long time. Is this bad for me to do? I want to believe that I'm just keeping myself cool on the outside so I feel more comfortable, but inside I'm still warmed up and burning calories. But part of me worries that I'm actually cooling my entire core down so that I'm not getting the maximum benefit of the workout. Which is correct?

I feel like I had a 3rd question I was thinking of earlier, but I can't remember it... I might be back with it later lol

Good questions. Afraid I don't have an answer, bit I'd like to know, too.

You need to warm up before doing either a workout or stretching, if you're doing one straight after the other I'd probably say workout first then you'll be all warmed up for stretching right away. But I don't know if this is right, even if you got a bunch of experts giving you answers they'd probably all say different things.

If you're overheating that's a sign your core temperature is warmed up, so long as you continue to exercise I doubt a fan will cool you down too much. I'd say listen to your body, if it's saying you can't keep going without a fan then use one.

I just made a thread about stretching here: http://forum.stripperweb.com/showthread.php?t=165865 I'm trying to increase my flexibility right now as well.

This link also has a lot of good info on the right way to stretch http://www.cmcrossroads.com/bradapp/...stretching.pdf

Aurora what type of workout are you doing? Its better to stretch after a workout. Think of your muscle as a rubber band...If you stretch a rubber band out before you use it, it won't be as strong. Stretch after for better recovery & helps with soreness.

Body temp does play a role in burning calories but not to the point where you would train with less time because your uncomfortable.

Always stretch AFTER your workout, not before. You can stretch a little before your cardio or weights if you have warmed up first, but there is no real benefit to doing it before rather than after. Also - if you are not warmed up enough, you are basically stretching cold and can pull or tear a muscle - ouch!! You should also always stretch after a workout whether you are trying to increase flexbility or not - its just good workout practise!

I'm not 100% on the fan, but I can't imagine it would do you any harm to have a fan blowing...the only thing that I can think of is that it would increase the rate at which you sweat, as the sweat will evaporate off your skin faster. This could conceivably dehydrate you faster, so you would just have to be careful to drink lots and lots of water after your workout to rehydrate properly.

My stretching experience is based on my effort to learn martial art. I am not very flexible person. So stretching was a very difficult ordeal for me during my classes. Yet, I needed to do it in order to execute certain kicks. I got to a point (about six inches from the ground) beyond which I was not able to make any progress. So one evening, after the class, my instructor decided to work with me. He made me run for about an hour. I was exhausted and breathing hard. My body was hot. Then, my instructor asked me to do the split. I was able to touch the floor. It was amazing. So it seems like if your body is warm, you will have easier time stretching.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I remember my 3rd question!

I don't like to wear shoes when I exercise. Basically, I'll only wear them when I'm running on the treadmill. Otherwise, doing any sort of cardio or strength training, I don't like them. But some people look shocked when I tell them, and tell me that's why my ankles and calves hurt sometimes after an intense workout. Is this really bad for me?

I think it depends on what kind of workout you do. The only workouts I've ever done are pilates, martial arts and pole dancing - all of which I did/do barefoot (or in heels)

Never stretch before you workout, that puts your muscles in a very compromised state. But ALWAYS stretch after you are done with your workout.

Yes you need to always warm up, start usually with a 5 minute cardio session before moving into a weight training session. Before you do any WT exercise always do a lower weight or just the bar as it will help your nerves awaken and not be suddenly jolted with the extreme weight.

I enjoy working out barefoot as well. For running get the Vibram Five fingers, it really feels like you are running barefoot.

For WT do not workout without shoes, besides accidentally dropping a weight on your foot it also causes too much stress on your ankles. It is best to get WT shoes, but I use converse all stars that lace up above the ankles. It gives very good support and your ankles wont need to be working to stabilize the leg as much.

    Always keep your core tight!
