Default Recommend a book for me

Hey all... its summer hols here and for once Ive decided instead of working myself into an early grave by busting my ass all holidays working, Im actually going to take time to enjoy life by only working 3-4 days/wk. So Im gonna be spending lots of time in the park and on the beach.

I would like a book or two to read but I have no clue because I never read for pleasure. So tell me about your favourite books and authors. I don't mind stuff thats a little trashy and I enjoy true crime and underworld type stories.

The Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris is quite good. Much better than True Blood.

I'll recommend the classics: J. R. R. Tolkien, Jane Austen, etc.

One of my favorite books is a somewhat hard-to-find one, called Wings of the Falcon, written by Barbara Michaels. It's like an Italian Zorro.

Anything by Elmore Leonard...... The acknowledged greatest American crime writer...... Great, great dialogue..... and always an easy read...... It might be more a mans taste.

    such an amazing book!

as a "girly pleasure" I like to read the Shopaholic (and any other books) by Sophie Kinsella. My favourite was called "Remember Me?"

"The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffeneger (I LOOOOVVVVEEE this one - don't judge it by the very mediocre movie based on it). - A man has a disorder which causes him to time travel at random times. He cannot control where or when he goes, and he takes nothing when he travels - even clothes. The story follows him and his wife through their epic and unusual relationship.

"The Magicians" by Lev Grossman - reminiscent of Harry Potter and the Narnia chronicles, but IMO better than either, and DEFINITELY for adults
@ firemaiden: based on your selections, I would def. recommend this one for you too!!!

"The Darling" by Russell Banks - former Weather Underground member and American expat wife of a gov't official in Liberia returns to Africa in her later years to confront the ghosts of her past, and the Liberian civil war that destroyed her family

Anything by Chris Bohjalian (especially "Midwives" or "The Double Bind")

"The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver (or anything else by her) - A 1950's southern U.S. family goes to the Congo to pursue the father's missionary aspirations. It is not what they expected, and they end up having to stay in Africa much longer than anticipated. The story is told from the POV of each of the 4 daughters in alternating chapters.

"The Tenth Circle" by Jodi Picoult - A married couple has a teenage daughter. The father is a graphic novelist, and the story is interspersed with excerpts from one of his novels - which parallels the story. The daughter acuses her boyfriend of rape, and is accused of lying. To escape, she goes to the one place that is hell for her father - and he must follow her there.

"The Hunger Games" (and the following two books in the trilogy) by Suzanne Collins - set sometime in the future, the U.S. is now 12 districts that are poverty stricken and work to support the lavish lifestyle of the people in the capital. Each year, a boy and girl are chosen from each district. All 24 children are shipped to an arena in the capital to fight each other to the death for the amusement of the capital.

Ummmmm, I'm sure there's more, but these are the first ones to come to mind.

If you like the Sookie Stackhouse books, check out the Mercy Thompson seires by Patricia Briggs. It's a similar type of urban fantasy world, but set in the U.S. NW. Mercy a little more badass than Sookie, too.

And of course, I can't recommend "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman enough. I just loved that book.

I've gotten into the books by Jennifer Chiaverini like the Runaway Quilt. There is a series of them and they are all light and fun. You don't need to be a quilter to like them.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Best book ever.
    http://www.amazon.com/Shantaram-Nove.../dp/0312330529

It's based on this guy's crazy life where he escaped from prison in Australia and moved to India with nothing. Lived in the slums, became a doctor for the poor, then moved his way up through the Mumbai mafia.

I'm an English teacher; you're in for it now lol

    The Poisonwood Bible: Barbara Kingsolver

The Hunger Games (and the following two books in the trilogy): Suzanne Collins

Anything by Jodi Picoult is EXCELLENT. She takes real issues and examines them from the POV's of the characters. My Sister's Keeper is a movie based off one of her novels.

If you like crime novels and thrillers, James Patterson is a decent author to check out. Some of his novels also deal with environmental problems.

Here are a few I think EVERYONE should read:

    Brave new world: Aldous Huxley
    1984: George Orwell
    Slaughterhouse 5: Kurt Vonnegut
    Heart of Darkness: Joseph Conrad
    Caliphate: Tom Kratman
Lord of the Flies: William Golding
    Lolita: Vladimir Nabokov
    Catch-22: Joseph Heller
    A clockwork orange: Anthony Burgess
One flew over the cuckoo's nest: Ken Kesey

    On a lighter note:

anything by L.J. Smith, C.S. Freidman, Lisa See, Kristin Hannah, Charlaine Harris, Kelley Armstrong, and Patricia Briggs.

What sort of genres do you enjoy reading?

All the Jodi Picoult books are fairly good, generally quiet full on but in a 'I can't put it down' kind of way.

I love the book Candy by Luke Davies - even better than the film!
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

If you like funny dialogue and a little loopiness, my favorite is Jennifer Cruisie's Bet Me. It is a romance, but I'd say it's more like a romantic comedy-- not really tawdry sex stuff.

Welcome to Temptation and The Goodnights are also by her and good but I'm not a fan of her other stuff.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips is another romance author who has really good dialogue and characters.
Ain't She Sweet is my favorite by her but she's fairly prolific and so long as it's not her early stuff, she's pretty awesome....

gosh-- there was another one by Phillips that I can't remember.... ah, Natural Born Charmer.

Those are all really easy, engaging, and laugh out loud funny (at least for me.)

    I skimmed the other suggestions--
    Poisonwood Bible is very beautiful.
I couldn't stand Charlaine Harris's writing-- felt like a book I would have read in fifth grade. Though I do love the TV series.

Couldn't get behind Garcia-Marquez's Hundred Years of Solitude, BUT do love Of Love and Other Demons and Love in the Time of Cholera. The first one is easier but they're both beautiful and have great imagery.

If you're interested in more serious writing, there's some great suggestions above, but several that I wouldn't consider "summer reading."

I found Jose Saramago's Blindness a page turner and fairly serious. Not funny though

Do you like dystopian novels at all?

Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, The Handmaid's Tale (Margarete Atwood)
Mira Grants' Newsflash Trilogy is alot of fun.
The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer was awesome!...I know it is geared towards YA, but man, that was such an interesting concept!
World Was Z by Max Brooks was actually really good, and quite scary.
Oh! Wool by Hugh Howey. It is super short but WOW!

As for novels that aren't about zombies or the end of the world:

Neil Gaiman: American Gods and Anansi Boys
The Girl in the Garden by Kamala Nair

and, of course, Room by Emma Donahuge

...have you ever been to goodreads.com? I love that community. It is a great way to find new books=)

If you want light, fun reading, pick up anything by Carl Hiaasen. My favorite of his is "Skinny Dip."

You could also try Elmore Leonard...it's in the same vein. Maybe try "Tourist Season."

    1984 was depressing but good.

    Handmaid's Tale was great.

If you're at all interested in history, specifically Korean history, Two Koreas is an excellent book.

I love Sandra Cisneros, I think Woman Hollering Creek is one all women could enjoy, although Caramelo and The House on Mango Street are my personal favorites because the make me feel nostalgic.

Ender's Game..... I liked it but my big brother is obsessed with it. Its a good one.

Their Eyes Were Watching God is another one of my personal favorites.

Wasted Beauty was a good novel.

"Master and Commander" by Patrick O'Brian, or the next book in the Aubrey-Maturin series if you've already read it. It's a wonderful series, particularly if you have a medical background. In my opinion, Patrick O'Brian is one of the most unfairly neglected authors of the late 20th century (by the general public; other writers have always held him in high regard).

If you enjoy crime/underworld type stories, definitely check out the Stieg Larsson books! The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. I couldn't put any of those down, they were so good.

I recently read Bossypants by Tina Fey on a plane flight and it was funny, light reading.

Memoirs of a Geisha was a great book.. They made it into a movie a while back.
