Question Things to do to grow artistically

im not trying to rip off jessies book thread, but i need similar ideas.
i have a few months off now and i dont wanna work more than 3-4 nights [though nevertheless i have a massive list of shit to save for]

but in the meantime i dont just want to sit on my laptop and go for a walk twice a day.
i want to grow artistically, not just for my fashion course but also for myself.

can anyone suggest any activities / books/ movies etc that would enable me with a starting point?

    i kinda wanna
see some exhibitions like the harry potter one
    go to the aquarium
    observatory
    visit melbourne
    read some classics........

    ideas?
    anything....

It might be cause its morning for me but are you asking about how to do things to grow as yourself. right?

I would say the best way is a garden.. You can be really artistic with how you grow them and what you grow.

draw at least one thing every day.

It doesn't matter what or for how long, and it doesn't matter if you want to be a painter or a designer or performance artist, but if you commit to doing it Every Single Day, for a certain period of time, something will happen!

One of my art professors said this, and he did this for years. Sometimes he'd be super busy and stressed, and only have enough time to take a pencil and drag it across a notepad before bed, but it does makes a difference. You're exercising your hand-eye coordination skills, as well as parts of your brain that work visually and creatively. It builds up gradually with habit (and it also deteriorates with lack of use).

My mom wanted to learn how to draw well, so she asked me for some lessons. I gave her a few, but then she said, "Either I'm not a good student, or you're not a good teacher, because I don't see my drawing skills improving at all!"

I told her, Mom, this stuff doesn't happen overnight. An Olympic runner doesn't just ask a coach for a Secret Code and then know how to win a race, they have to work on it, do their stretches, daily routine, etc. If they stop for a while, even if just a few days, it's noticeable. Same with creative skills, you often have to build up a momentum before you start knocking down bigger things.

Another thing to try: copy/imitate people you admire.

(I don't mean this as in trying to rip off others or become a weird stalker... but see it purely as for learning purposes...)

In Painting classes, we were assigned to do Master Copies, where you make a replica of something a Master did. In Drawing class as a kid, we were assigned to replicate different magazine cut-outs, postcards, whatever. Your brain and body start to recognize patterns, get used to the creation process, and pretty soon you carry out your own ideas more effortlessly.

Look up and research work of artists/designers/etc. of people you like, and maybe try to find work that is similar to theirs, too... just to look at it! You can do this online, save clippings, set images as your wallpaper, etc.

If you can, befriend more/new creative types, ideally ones you would like to emulate, and simply spend some time with them, have simple conversations. It doesn't have to be a huge effort, but the basic desire and smallest motions to draw yourself into a certain kind of environment will start to affect you in positive ways, give you new questions and ideas that you wouldn't have thought of before.

A project you may or may not be interested in? I think they do this every year... you buy a book from them, fill it out, mail it back, and then your book gets to travel in an exhibition, and then be on permanent display in Brooklyn afterwards. I'm currently working on mine for 2011...

thanks for the ideas babe! and yes youre absolutely right art and happiness are basically habits that one does often.
besides, i havent been okay lately, im stressed and my relationship is on the rocks so the opposite is also true, if im depressed and neglect my design and art projects and things ill be absorbed by depression and nothing productive to do.... so i must force myself to do creative things....
i read about the sketchbook thing, i think i just missed the deadline oh well

I'm a sponser / supporting member at a really amazing art museum. I like to go there every week or two for a couple hours and just check things out. I go to most of the new exhibits and the members events. I picked this spot because it has truly GREAT work but I do enjoy getting out and seeing work by emerging artists as well. I have an art background and though I don't have the space or inclination at the moment to be super creative myself, I like getting out and being a part of the scene.
I may look into volunteering a couple hours a week there and maybe you could do something similar . There are so many ways to get involved!

Frida always inspires me to draw again. Try something outside your comfort zone.

I crochet a lot, and not to toot my own horn but everyone wants my hats. I make owl, hello kitty, sock monkey, giraffe, lady bug, bear, elf hats in all kinds of colors and sizes for family members and they all love them and I can't make enough fast enough for everyone (kinda because I'm always making one for my own daughter). It is so relaxing to just sit and follow a pattern while watching an old movie or listening to music. You can just learn the basic stitches and make yourself your perfect scarf in whatever colors you've always wanted one but could never find. If you are interested in crocheting let me know, I'd be happy to share patterns I've found online and tips etc.

I made a stripping scrap book and take it to work. Its not anything fancy just stupid shit I hear in the DR or from custies, and I have my nightly earnings in there too. It was nice to have something that was really me in my work bag and if I was having a shitty night I'd use my scrap book to write or draw the person who pissed me off with saggy tits and devil horns with a quote of whatever they said to me. Just a weird idea, maybe someone else would like to try it.

Knitting is super easy, easier than crochet in my opinion and I love it.

One of my majors is art and I ask my professors for lots of reccomendations of books to read, movies to see and gallery shows to go to. My professors are great about lending out good books and stuff. I just returned a book to my professor about the portrayal of prostitutes throughout the history of art.

I would say volunteer. It will surely help you grow as a person, and I'm sure that'll be expressed in your artwork from now on. Maybe volunteer to teach an art class or a sculpting class to underprivileged or special needs kids?

Of course, the food lover I am - I'd also suggest baking. Cooking and baking helps you express yourself all sorts of ways......and cake decorating is super fun.

Maybe take up a musical instrument?

^^I agree with food & music being great ways to express yourself artistically...combined if possible, then add some wine & we're good to go!

Just don't overdo it with art.

People want to use art to relax, and that's cool, but the reality is, true creativity is an incredibly stressful, and for some people, dark experience. I went to an art school straight out of HS and the statistics of cigarette and drug use was quite high compared to other groups. The school was also known for its pharmaceutical program so the joke went that the uni was for the people who made the drugs and those that took em.

    Anyway.

There are often community classes set up for casual art students; some include life drawing, some are paint classes. They're cheap, relaxed, and you often get feedback if you want it. I know around here in DC there are classes held once a month with wine, a DJ, and other adults who want to mingle and just hang. You pay the fee, they provide canvases and paint. Haven't done it, but it sounds cool. My point, I guess, is be careful how much you take on, and look into community classes and whatnot to ease you in!

I create my best artwork when Im angry or severely depressed, hurting...Its a place I dont want to go and I rarely create anything due to that. Joy does not draw me to creativity..Pain does...Pretty flowers r nice to see but are not moving to me most of the time.

Art is a expression of emotion & thought, from the Dark to the daisies. There is no need to worn somebody about your weaknesses to create.
