Im kinda pressed for time right now, but I run logitech9000, vista 64 bit on an Asus i7 with 9 gigs ram (i have the win7 upgrade but have not taken time to install, really need to), 5M upload speed, NVidia Geoforce GTX 260 graphics card, dual monitors, not sure of size, may update this later when i have more time, 1 big 1 small (which I need to upgrade, want bigger). I can't recommend Asus computers enough, love em!

I was thinking of getting this laptop for camming and sue two monitors I already have. I don't think it'd be a bad idea and, since that thing can run Battlefield 3 at Ultra settings, I don't see why it won't do multiple streams in high quality (640x480). What do you think?

Type of computer (Desktop, laptop or all in one)esktop

    CPU (Processor): AMD Phenom 6-core

Amount and type of RAM (e.g. 8GB of DDR3 RAM): 8 GB DDR3

Graphics card (if applies):No, I picked a motherboard with a built in GC just to have jack where to plug monitor in cause I figured 8 GB RAM should be able to handle everything, since GC's are only starting to be used in video rendition etc. Correct me if I'm wrong but they are still targeted at video games mostly...

Amount of storage space: 750 MB

    Operating system: Win 7 Premium

    Webcam: C910

Monitor(s): Age old small LCD monitor

Not to derail but if someone knows about whether a GC can actually help with video encoding/rendition I would appreciate your opinion on that!

This is still gray area for me... (and maybe others too)

add: but then again everything seems to be working for me w/o a dedicated video card (e.g. it takes somewhere between 2-4 minutes to render a 700 MB sized video in Movie Maker I guess that's not too bad, so that answers my question...

Unless you use an Nvidia GPU that supports CUDA, and make some deep configurations, I don't think it'll help that much. Granted: a nice GPU can make a system faster (and let you play games) but, I have my doubts regarding the need for a dedicated (and hefty) GPU for this job.

    Thanks!

When I did research I saw that CUDA stuff and thought the same thing - a little too early to really make use of it...

Kinda, it's more used for professional applications such as video edition and 3D rendering, as well as heavy engineering applications. Maybe a GPU could be for you, who knows. If there was only a way to use the GPU for webcam video encoding (when broadcasting) instead of the CPU, that would be amazing.

BTW, There's a webcam from Creative Labs (Live! Cam inPerson HD) which apparently is capable of doing its own encoding on the go, without touching the CPU. This means it wouldn't be a resource hog, unlike most of the webcams out there. I haven't tried it, though, and there are mixed reviews about this product.

Interesting. The video quality has such bad reviews though! almost all of them say it's streaming poor video. Too bad too because that would be awesome if it doesn't put a drain on the CPU.

Funny, my C510 has a nice video quality and it wasn't that expensive TBH. Either way, with current mid to high end CPU's, the CPU drain shouldn't be THAT big. Laurie, is your system a desktop or a laptop? Just curious 'cause you mentioned you have a Core i7 in it.

I have an idea: What if we make a poll/database here to find out what most of us are using to work? I guess this could help other camgirls find out if they need to upgrade, and if so, find out what they can get for cheap. Whatcha all think?

With this info, I could also post lists of parts for girls who would like to buy a new computer. What do you think?

This is the 'flip side' of the USB 3.0 approach to achieving the 'next level' of low cost webcam performance. Logitech was rumored to be working on a new C930 model which would also include on-board encoding. The real reason for the onboard encoding of course is to get around the bandwidth limitations of USB 2.0 ... which in turn means high compression rates which potentially explain the 'bad reviews' !

PS that Asus laptop with quad core I7 plus 12 Gigs ram and 2 gigs of video should run any graphics intensive game at 'warp speed'

The laptop would be mostly for camming in a few sites at the same time, 2 of them in HD. Also, since I'm majoring in engineering and computer science, I need something that can have enough horsepower for my program developing needs. At least until I graduate from college
