Default Handstands (For my thicker women)

How long did it take you to learn how to do one? What did you do to practice/prep for it?

When I see lean, finely toned ladies do it I attribute it more to natural ability or prior gymnastics experience or something. But when I see thick chicks around my size doing handstand moves too, I'm like O_o How do they do that?!

I've started back doing pilates & also yoga to increase my flexibility and to learn how to really hold my own weight.

Any extra practicing tips??? I also think part of me is scared of falling over & breaking my neck or something LOL.

I'm a thick girl with gymnastic experience. Inverting onto the pole and going into a handstand from there is the easiest, just keep your arms locked. It will build your endurance and when you cant hold it anymore, then you just roll off the pole,(tuck your chin in and slowly slide down). Once you get comfortable with that, then start walking into handstands, I started using walls to lean against when I was in gymnastics. After you mastered that then try the pole. Btw, I wouldnt put a time limit on it. It took me a little bit of time since I didnt have much upper body strength, your results may be different. I wish you the best.
Tipping... it's not just for cows anymore!

I figure skated until I was 18 so I have no fear of falling, and love pole dancing because of it's similarity in that it combines "tricks" with dance. To learn a handstand, first try practicing against a wall, then move one step back from the wall and then another, etc. The wall is there so you don't have to worry about overshooting and landing on your back (ouch!) good luck!

^^^ Thanks, ladies! Using the wall as a crutch to start is a great idea. I think I'm also going to buy a chin-up/pull up bar for my door frame so I can build better upper body strength!

i can hand stand on the pole, but not standalone... My goal is to learn to do a headstand~! i can "elbow stand" lol when I crawl to the pole and grip it in my hands and kick up that way, to kind of make an O with my body with the pole in between... I actually learned those things in Pole Class in my pre-stripper days.

As for pull-up bar... I went to my friends house this week and he had one! He started doing pull ups and asked me could I do one... of course I couldn't... what I did was pull up and end in an inverted 'V' with my hands in the middle... he doesn't know about my dancing so he was (O.o) shocked and thrilled to say the least lol
