    Lightbulb my new diet

    My new diet

I have an addictive personality meaning if I start a bad habit the only way for me to get rid of it is to start a new habit. To start a healthier way of eating I decided to trick my brain into eating more vegetables. Do you see the glass half empty or half full? Or should I say plate?

One way to trick your brain into healthier eating is getting smaller plates. If you have big plates hide them. You will unconsciously eat smaller portions, and your plate will be over flowing with food! Yum!

Eating vegetables is an investment in your health and in the long run it helps you earn/save money. Speaking of hiding things, its time to hide all the junk food in the house, or better yet, throw it away. Yeah it sucks to throw all that food you spent hard earned money on. This is the consequence to spending your money on junk food. You should have been investing in vegetables. You are saving money on medical bills when you are older and building your immune system. A healthy immune system, fueled by vegetables, will help you stay healthy during flu season; help you not miss work and in turn; earn more.

Another way to trick your brain is to use the rule of 50-25-25. 50%vegetables, 25% protein, 25% carbs of your plate. Imagine your plate is a pie chart divided into those three parts and that is all you need to stay healthy!

When I walk into a grocery store the first place I head to is the produce section. Look for vegetables on sale and in season. Check out the frozen vegetables. They are cheap and great in soups. Fresh is the best way to go. Make smoothies, sauté with olive oil over low heat, or chop them up into a salad. Instead of processed dressing use a mix of olive oil, lime juice, and salt.

If you have a sweet tooth like me there is no limit on fruit. Bananas are cheap and available year around. They are a great snack when you are running out the door. Another sweet you would not think of as healthy is chocolate! That is dark chocolate, not milk or white chocolate. Dark chocolate can be bought in bars. Look for 65% coco or more.

Corn and potatoes are considered carbohydrates. So they should take up only 25% of your plate. Brown rice, whole grain pastas, breads, muffins, and cereals are also great. When baking at home try to substitute sugar with honey. Honey strengthens your immune system and the enzymes have already been broken down by bees, so it will be easier for your body to absorb.

When it comes to protein seasoning is key. Marinate meat over night at least, the longer the better. Go for lean meat like chicken, turkey, lean beef. Some great ingredients for marinades are soy sauce, red wine vinegar, lime juice, ginger, lemon grass, green onions, garlic, and chili pepper if you like it spicy. Another great form of protein is tofu, eggs, and fish. Remember protein should take up only 25% of your plate.

Its all in the way you look at food. We think of vegetables as a side dish, when really its the main course. Carbs and protein are the side dishes! Have fun cooking, saving your health and your money!
