Obama Legalizes Horse Slaughter for Human Consumption

    Published: November 28, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Horse slaughter plants are legal again in the United States. Restrictions on horse meat processing for human consumption have been lifted.

In a bipartisan effort, the House of Representatives and the United States Senate approved the Conference Committee report on spending bill H2112, which among other things, funds the United States Department of Agriculture. On November 18th, as the country was celebrating Thanksgiving, President Obama signed a law, allowing Americans to kill and eat horses. Essentially, one turkey was pardoned in the presence of worldwide media while in the shadows, buried under pages of fiscal regulation, millions of horses were sentenced to death.

Horse slaughter has been prohibited in the United States as funding for inspections of horses in transit and at slaughter houses was non-existent. This worked because the horse meat cannot be sold for human consumption without such inspections. The House version of the bill retained the de-funding language and the Senate version did not. The conference committee charged with reconciling the two opted to not include it. The result is that it is now legal to slaughter horses for humans to eat.

Notwithstanding that 70% of Americans oppose horse slaughter, that President Obama made a campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption (horses can be sent to Mexico and Canada), that documentation of animal cruelty, slaughterhouse stench, fluid runoff and negative community impact exists, it is taxpayers that will bear the costs!

Wyoming state representative Sue Wallis and her pro-slaughter group estimate that between 120,000 and 200,000 horses will be killed for human consumption per year and that Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Georgia and Missouri, are considering opening slaughter plants.

During these trying times, is the only thing that Democrats and Republicans can agree on is that Americans need to eat horses?

I don't agree with killing horses. I don't have an issue with Obama, but this is just wrong IMO.

ive never eaten horse, but i have eaten zebra before and the meat was very tough and stringy. if horse meat tastes anything like it i doubt americans are going to be running out to buy horse meat for the family.

not sure why this law was even passed. i do think that horse meat should be legal, but im on the opposite of a lot of ppl when it comes to what meat should be legal etc. ive eaten dog, so im already satan in most americans' eyes.

and yes, i have experience around horses. grew up around them. i like horses, but im not sure where the line is between what is and is not edible. pigs are smart too (probably smarter) and they are legal for consumption...
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

This. While it makes me sad, I bet that the majority of that 70% who oppose it have no problem with cows, pigs, and chickens being slaughtered every day for them to eat. I don't really understand where most people's line is - I would think you either oppose all slaughter or you don't care what meat people eat.... it's just a matter of what people grew up being taught or what their preferences for animals are. But it's kinda silly for most people to decry this law and then go out for burgers later...

I don't see why this is "ew" if you eat beef, pork, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. I don't eat meat anyway so yeah I don't think people should eat horse. The same way I don't think people should eat cows or pigs. They are all animals.
But if you do eat meat ... :p

But I totally agree that he should get on legalizing weed, gay marriage, etc. before stuff like this.

I've eaten horse in Europe, its not very tasty. But there are so many unwanted horses that are not taken care of out there, and their meat can be used for animal feed/non-human consumption, as well as their hair, fur, hooves, etc.

Oh also, just because I want to say it first: I have a cat but I sure do love to eat some pussy!

This is the truth. There are way too many horses out there, and with the economy the way it is, there are more and more people who can't afford to keep their horses.

Slaughter is a much better option than people abandoning their horses, leaving them to slowly starve to death. Or putting horses through a terrible long trailer ride to Mexico to be slaughtered.

I am also a former horse owner and riding competitor.

It's sad but I've already been hearing for a few years how horse owners are literally dumping horses they cannot afford anymore at Rescue Centers, or just turning them loose. Bad economy= hard choices.

Honestly, a quick death by a slaughterhouse stun gun beats starving to death in the high desert, or being torn apart alive by wolves.

Interesting points, but this doesn't end with horse steak coming to a menu near you. You'll see heavily processed horse being used as protein rich filler in other inexpensive meat products. To me that's more disgusting than the idea of eating a horse.

As time goes on the merits of being a vegetarian become more apparent

As far as owners getting rid of their horses, they may as well put down
Black Beauty themselves rather than pretending to themselves that the
man buying their horse really IS going to use it as a pasture horse
(Unless they check it out and that pasture is not next to a slaughterhouse.)

As owners, I think we have a responsibility to offer our pets a clean death
if we can't offer them a clean life. Fast Food Nation talks about how cows
aren't always processed correctly, as in, yes, they can be disembowled alive
when the death blow doesn't work.

Also, there's something to be said for sending a companion animal
into a slaughterhouse reeking of fear and chaos wondring where their beloved
    owner is.

I don't have a problem with horse meat. I'm sure there's a market for it though
it'd be nice if it wasn't foisted off on people unknowingly like kangaroos in burgers or
beef fat in supposedly vegetarian french fries (hint: both mcdonalds.)

I have an issue that there's no agency to watch over, even nominally, how
these horses are processed. Also, that this was signed rather sneakily. plus,
if he said one thingand did another, I am disappointed. Horsemeat doesn't
need to be kegalized as a way to euthanize horses.

But it makes me said for the companion animals. It'd be like me dropping
my dog off at the pound to sit there in a loud, stinky, chaotic, and fear filled
environment for 2-3 weeks before being dragged to a death-smelling room,
and put down, possibly without a concern or any compassion, all the while wondering
where I am, what he did wrong, and wondering when I'm going to walk through
the door to take him home.

I hear you and completely agree. However, a lot of horse owners don't have the same mentality, they see them more as livestock than companion animals. Most would rather sell the horse for meat and make a couple hundred dollars than pay a couple hundred for euthanasia.

Of course I would never send a horse for meat, and think that it is a cruel and frightening death, but I do think that it is better than suffering and dying slowly for months.

PETA meets Food Stamp / School Lunch budget deficits !

You'll see heavily processed horse being used as protein rich filler in other inexpensive meat products.
Yup you absolutely will. With livestock feed prices rising rapidly ( as the arguable result of greatly increased corn ethanol farming displacing acreage formally used for feed grains ), horses are not the only animals where the costs of feeding them are becoming untenable. Thus in the short term, a 'glut' of beef, chicken, and now horse meat will be dumped on the market as producers 'thin their herds' down to affordable levels, it will depress meat prices. But next year, with this year's 'glut' fully consumed, meat prices are likely to be MUCH higher due to the greatly reduced supply ! This in turn will increase demand for 'mystery meat' products by those on very limited budgets / food stamps. And horse meat at bargain prices will provide a viable means for SPAM etc. to avoid floating massive price increases next year that will undoubtedly be experienced with every 'identifiable' meat i.e. steak, pork chops, chicken, turkey etc.

the economics now works like this ... from

(quote)"Cattlemen say skyrocketing feed and fuel costs are eating into profits and retailers are apprehensive about passing all price increases on to consumers during a still struggling economy.

Meanwhile, beef production is at a 65-year low amid increasing demand from export markets that saw beef prices climb to record highs during the first half of the year.

Competitive markets overseas coupled with a weak U.S. dollar mean consumers can expect beef prices in the grocery to eventually catch up.

"Folks are only going to run on a loss for so long, which makes it very interesting," said Jack Field, executive vice president of the Washington Cattlemen's Association in Ellensburg. "You've got to make your markup for your operation and keep things going."(snip)

Prime Cut Meats & Deli owner Greg Palachuck said traffic at his West Valley shop has dropped off by about 60 percent since prices shot up about 20 percent to 30 percent on prime rib, his specialty.

He said he's relying on other cuts of meat to offset the drop in sales.

"I was actually surprised when I called for prices -- everything is out of control," he said. "By the time you pay for your butcher, and paper and wrapping, you're about breaking even."

(snip)"He said recent surges in beef prices has helped him steady his 400-head operation. Last month prices at a beef auction in Toppenish shot up about 15 cents per pound, and he said he unloaded about 180 head at anywhere between $1.35 and $1.40 a pound.

"It was a great, great sale," he said.

And good sales most likely will continue as U.S. beef exports are 27 percent above a year ago and are expected to continue increasing through next year, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Even though prices are good, Waddington said he's not getting rich. He said rising feed costs are eating into profits.

Field said hay prices on average have shot up by about $20 a ton, with average prices hovering anywhere between $165 to $185 a ton. And corn prices are up to $7 or $8 a bushel, he added.

Waddington said while the average price of $1.25 a pound will bring him about $780 for the average cow, it cost him roughly $480 to $500 just to keep the animal feeding on a pasture.

"What makes it tough is there is no labor figured into that, there's no fuel figured into that and there's no cost of fixing fences in that," he said."(snip)

So yes, given the massive increase in export demand ( Chinese workers are developing a taste for meats now that they can finally afford to buy them ), and given the rising producition cost pressures, the availability of a new 'cheap' source of meat protein would be helpful to many !

The US needs to embrace entomophagy or insect cultivation for food. More ecologically sound animal protein, better nutrients too. Crickets arent bad in an empanada.

Most animals consume some level of their fecal matter. Touched a doorkob then covered your mouth recently? Tossed someone's salad? Chickens, especially the farmed kind, are wellknown for this. Ive seen cows chewing cud next to their patties - and they were free range... factory farmed animals are usually a little loopy so it is probably more widespread than you think. Humans should have more sense but there are whole forums dedicated to supa-sexy poop consumption.

Eating a dead body is pretty gross stuff. I eat meat but Im aware Im eating a dead body without the animal's ... autospy report and full urinalysis.

Hm. I guess if they're notcompanion animals but rather livestock
    it's a little bit different. Like I said, I don't have a problem with
a butcher killing an animal correctly. but these factory slaughterhouses
fuck up a bunch AND there's huge sanitation issues not to mention
safety issues (low paid and little trained staff means mangled limbs,
being squished to death, and having your lungs eaten away by caustic cleaning
agents while not using the correct safety procedures. Am I the only one
who sees how illegal aliens are the backbone of a lot of big business because
they're considered expendable by likely the same people who talk about
aliens stealing american jobs? Citizens are less afraid to sue after losing a limb
on the same machine that's eaten two other guys' arms and killed a third.)

Oh, and I'm glad this thread is open despite being political though I wonder for how lo
AND I edited my previous post yet missed "kegalized" in lieu of "legalized"

*beavis and butthead chuckling* I said kegalized.
