Thickening products usually contain a ton of chemicals that causes further damage and breakage. You said your hair is long. Can you afford to cut or trim off the damaged ends? You'd be surprised at the difference a small trim makes.

Eating fresh fruits, veggies, and lean meats and quality protein will tremendously aid in the QUALITY of your hair growth.

Minimize heat styling and use jumbo velcro rollers to straighten or add waves and volume to hair. Yes, very large rollers can actually replace your heat straightener.

A trick to adding volume to the roots is applying unscented baby powder. Be careful if your hair is dark though.

+ 1. I love this trick. My hair isn't super thick, and it gets weighted down and flat-looking very easily. You can also you corn starch, I believe, but I like baby powder.

I also do this on my days off when I am too lazy to take a shower but don't want the world to know.

Biotin is great for growing in healthy, thicker strands of hair. You have to take it for at least several weeks, though, to see results. Nothing will make you grow in MORE hair -- you only have so many hair follicles, from birth. But you can grow in stronger, healthier hair.

Fish oil/flax seed oil capsules are great for your hair, too. And make sure you're taking your vitamins and eating healthy, that really helps, especially since you say your hair is thinning/falling out.

Overprocessing your hair is obviously not good for it, but you can keep it in decent shape by using deep conditioners and protein shampoos/conditioners/treatments (like Joico K-Pak or Redken Anti-Snap, but don't overdo it).

There are also products for thinning hair that are supposed to help your hair grow in healthier & faster, like Nioxin. But there's a lot of debate on whether this stuff actually works.

If all else fails... get hair extensions! Instantly thicker, longer hair : )

I have super thin hair, that used to be noticeably thinning from stress, and I've tried all of these... my over-bleached hair looks way thicker/healthier when I use deep conditioners & protein treatments, and I wound up getting keratin fusion extensions earlier this year, which was a godsend, gave me super thick hair instantly, and gave my hair a chance to grow out longer in the meantime.

Cassia is a good alternative to henna if you want thickening without the red tint.

Biotin, MSM, B5 are good vitamins to take.

Also, protein treatments thicken hair as well. Add an egg to your deep conditioner and grow your hair long and strong.

Sorry if I am not supposed to be posting here, but I am a hairstylist. :-)
If you have pics of your hair, I can help you determine if your issue is hair quantity or volume and make some suggestions from there.
