    Default Consumer Reports for employment?

For employment, they're asking for a background check, no prob. but my credit's messed up w/collections..no judgements right now but my credit ugh..

ETA: Was hoping to get a quick answer here, as I have a pending offer, I can't email Mel...I guess I just have to let them know up front my situation? It's really not my fault I had some expenses, I didn't like go crazy @ the stores or anything..hmm

yes, it's now a routine procedure for prospective 'straight job' employers to check applicant credit scores. From my 'business acquaintances', what the prospective 'straight job' employer is attempting to determine is the 'responsibility level' of the applicant. While there are indeed cases where someone's credit rating wound up being trashed for reasons beyond their control, in general the prospective 'straight job' employers will attribute a bad credit score to basic irresponsibility on the part of the applicant ... thus the prospective employer will infer a correlation between a history being late paying bills / not paying bills / allowing debts to proceed to collection with a future likelihood of being late for work / not showing up for work / personal and-or legal problems that may detract focus away from work.

However, if you have a pending offer, this means that the prospective employer has seen a lot of merit in other areas of your resume' ... meaning that you'll definitely get the chance to explain face to face why your credit score wound up being trashed. You're lucky, because in many cases these days, if there is one job opening versus ten applicants, with all else being equal, the 5 applicant resumes that return a rotten credit score will probably 'accidentally fall' into the waste basket.

I remember hearing about a bill being written to not allow employers to look at credit reports for job applicants. I can't remember if this was in a specific state, or a federal bill.

    Just found this:

    http://www.nolo.com/legal-encycloped...-29053-11.html

Federal law allows employers to check credit reports, but only if the applicant consents. Some states, however, do not allow employers to check an applicant's credit or refuse to hire someone because of poor credit. In states that allow employers to check credit reports, employers generally comply with the consent requirement by asking all applicants to sign a written consent and submit it along with their employment applications. If you decide not to hire someone based on information in the credit report, you have to let the applicant know and explain his or her right to challenge the contents of the report. For more information on checking credit reports, school records, and other information on applicants, see Nolo's article Running Credit Checks on Job Applicants.

Right now Illinois is trying to pass an employment law that would outlaw credit checking in most cases. I personally wouldn't allow employers to check unless it was a goof job and I was a sure thing because I have heard checking credit actually brings the rating down.

^^^ only 'hard' inquiries from banks / financial institutions are supposed to negatively impact credit scores ( based on the premise that the person is seeking additional loans ). 'Soft' inquiries from prospective employers are supposed to be neutral.

But yes a few states are trying to pass legislation that would prevent the future use of credit scores in the evaluation of prospective employees.
