Default dont know what to do about the dryness of my hair

Hello body professionals. I've been having hair problems..well my whole life and I don't even know if there's a solution at this point.

I'm middle eastern and my hair is naturally curly/frizzy and extremely thick.

Years ago I did the japanese straightening but it would leave my hair dull and dead.

So I began doing the Brazilian Keratin Treatment as well as dying my hair just a shade or two lighter as opposed to lightening it too much to prevent overprocessing it.

My problem is sure my hair is not as frizzy or curly and more manageable looking due to the brazilian but my hair is never SOFT like the kind of soft that you wanna run your fingers through. The roots are okay but the middle to the ends of my hair kinda has a coarse plasticky no moisture feel to it. if I rub my hair against my own cheek or neck it actually itches.

I've tried looking for products on makeupalley, i used to sometimes do the deep conditioning and didnt feel like it would make a difference, I've bought cheap and expensive products that have gotten rave reviews, also if I curl my hair with my flat iron the curls end up really really dry.

I don't know what im doing wrong!!! I don't flat iron or blow dry everyday only on special occasions. My heat styling tools are high end and I use a heat protectant.

The ONLY time my hair feels soft and smooth is when I go to the salon and they do a professional blow dry which is a handful of times a year. I wish I had the skillful hand of a hair stylist so I could mimic what they do but to no avail.

Im wondering if this is just the texture of my hair and its hopeless??? It just sucks cuz every time I'm on a date or with a guy I know they dont care for my hairs texture i can tell (they wont say it but i know theyre thinking it) and they barely touch it LOL sad but true!!! It might LOOK good but it doesn't feel good.

    ):

    please help

You may be using too much protein, silicones and sulfates. Head over to longhaircommunity.com and learn how to treat your ethnic hair right.

Thank you. my shampoo and conditioner are sulfate and sodium free to preserve the longevity of my keratin treatment. Perhaps it could be the silicones? hmm.

I second that website. You can also do an avocado mixed with evoo mask. Leave it in for two hours, then shampoo it off.

I have hair down to my hips that I've taken from black to blonde multiple times. Some things that help with dryness/texture for me are:

Using a deep conditioner every time I wash my hair. I use Aquage Healing Conditioner and leave it on for several minutes. If you have extra time, leaving on a mask should help some too. When I shampoo, I use a silkening shampoo, which Aquage also has. I use this line mainly because it's good for color treated hair and humid climates. I'm sure there are comparable products from different lines.

Drying my hair out with a round brush. If I let my hair air dry, it can become frizzy and coarse. But if you take the time to comb it out, section it, then dry it with a good dryer (ones that have inconsistent temperatures screw with mine, like I had one that would go cold if I moved it too much... made me look like I had bad bed head), and you dry it from the root down (using the straightening attachment helps), then you'll get that smooth finish like at the salon.

Using a leave-in conditioner and/or smoothing serum. I put in a milk shine and then a straightening serum, since my hair is so long/thick that the lighter products usually don't do a complete job. Depending on the thickness of your hair, this may be a good option too, just make sure you keep it off your roots, otherwise they'll appear greasy.

I ENVY you ladies with long thick hair. I am in the process of growing mine out. I have quit blow drying it and this has helped tremendously with keeping it from being too dry. But it is also important to realize that curly hair IS more dry and coarse naturally. Also hot oil treatments rock for moisturizing!

Sounds like u may have protein over load. If i'm not mistaken, keratin has proteins. You should start using all natural products. Aubrey Organics is a good one for any hair texture. Whole Foods sells their line, u can also chk them out online. Try using coconut oils, jojoba or olive oil as well. Coconut oil is the best one for moisture because it's closest to our natural scalp oil and it's the only one that actually absorbs into the hair and scalp.

I just wanted to add this. Moisture rich shampoo and conditioner will greatly help most dry hair conditions.

Also another thing you could do is apply some coconut or mustard oil to your hair before you go to bed then wash it off in the morning. Your hair will be shiny and soft next day.

Slather your entire head of hair in warm coconut oil, cover with a shower cap and leave it on for an hour or so then shampoo it out. Works wonders on your hair and scalp.

Something else that has helped me tremendously is buying pure Argan oil (you can get a bottle at whole foods for around $15) and rubbing some into the ends of your hair before going to bed at night. There's no need to rinse out because your hair will literally soak all of the oil up and it will be gone in the morning. Makes hair nice and silky, I have waist length hair and the ends used to get all crunchy and look like hay, not anymore!

I so agree, coconut oil works wonders. I use it all the time. At whole foods a jar of it is only abt 10 bucks. I use it for hair and body because I have ezcema so it's easy for me to get dry.

^ Mustard.......lmao. The jackal you're quite the beauty guru in body business. I have really dry frizzy, naturally wavy coarse hair and I've used every product line out there and don't know any real miracle products but I picked up some of the new humectress in the tub( hate the old and nexus in general) for my extensions since it looked similar to the keretase I use on my extensions and I ended up using on my real hair and it's awesome! I have zero shine and really frizzy texture and it made it smooth and shiny and it's cheaper than the 60 I pay for the keratese and just as good!

    Thanks for the compliment Michelle!

Our minds have been conditioned towards looking for solutions in a bottle or a tube. We often forget that the nature has given us the solutions we need. I tend to seek out natural solution if possible. I suggest this to everyone.

thank you for all the responses! To be honest I'm pretty limited on what products I can use on my hair as I've done the Brazilian keratin and have to avoid sulfate and sodium chloride which many products use.

However I checked out the long hair community and I'm gonna do the CWC method which is condition hair, wash with shampoo, then condition again, do a deep conditioning treatment 2ce a week perhaps using some of the suggestions here and possibly use a clarifying shampoo just incase the problem is also product build up.

    Thanks guys!!

UPDATE: just wanted to add that I think my dry hair has something to do with socal's water. The water here is hard on skin and hair because when I spent some time in Hawaii or Vegas my hair was waaay softer. I'm gonna try using a shower filter and will get back to those interested in seeing if that would make a difference.

I use a shower filter and it made a world of a difference on my dry itchy skin, and it's supposed to help with the hair as well. Look into an Aquasana, it's cheaper yet equivalent to the Jonathon brand one that sells at Ulta.

I bought a shower filter and thought it helped from limiting chlorine, but I didn't use it enough before I left to give a good review. I agree with oil, whether coonut, argan, or olive. Just try to get cold pressed unrefined coconut oil. Also, check out Vataki oil on amazon. It's a mixture and can be found at some India groceries. I have straight hair and my boyfriend has curly hair. his curls look amazing after I slather his head in oil and slowly comb out his knots. He then sleeps like that and shampoos and conditions his hair in the morning and the curls are like a fucking four year old's, I tell ya--pure, non fucked with curl. BUT, being a guy, he has short hair that's not messed up by color or heat treatment.

Vataki is good for mine but I have to put just the tiniest bit in or do the whole slathered in oil
braid for the day, not much in between though maybe coarse thick hair would suck it up better.

I've seen a lot on long hair forum and here about avoiding cone shampoos and conditioners or just using occasionally. I know that's like silicone and dimethocone and stuff but what are some good cone free shamps and conditioners?

I have very coarse thick out of control dry hair also and recently found 2 products that have worked wonders when used in conjunction with a round brush. One is an all natural deep conditioner w shea butter called beautiful curls by Alffia that I impulse bought in a health food store. It works SO well and like the OP I had tried a million different products including regular keratin treatments. The other is a bedhead shine spray I use after straightening or blow drying. Coconut oil worked well, but it was a more intensive process and what can I say I'm lazy.

Biotin is what u get from eating veggies and what not. It helps ur nails and hair grow longer and stronger. Some people don't get enough biotin so they take the biotin pills. U can get them from your local drug store but I would recommend not taking them because most of the time your body is already getting the biotin it needs. A lot of women have tried the pills and have seen reactions such as acne while using it. I've tried it to see what happens and I didn't see a change in hair growth and I did see a few breakouts. There are a lot of forums that talk abt biotin. So u can just google it but u should consult ur doctor before hand because u can overdose on the stuff
