Default "My Job as Eye Candy"

Over here is a story of a young lady in London, who was forced by financial issues to work in a bar as some sort of hostess. In her article she took exception to it.

I thought you folks would like to read her comments. I take no position on it myself.

    Enjoy.

It's sad that she feels that way. I completely understand her frustration since that's not what she wanted out of her life, and she was angry that she was unable to find work where she really wanted. But, personally, I find it a bit of a god-send that women at least have the option of jumping into hostessing/stripping/whatever when they need quick money to stay afloat. It may not be the line of work that a professional woman with other ambitions wants to be in, but at least it's there and easily accessible. It sure beats being on the streets or being a guy that goes around having to beg for a factory job or something when their job gives out.

Rather than be angry that people think "a woman should be in magazines or writing magazines, but not both," I would draw pride from the fact that I could do both. It's great that she has the brains to be a writer, but there's nothing that takes away from that or is shameful in the fact that she's pretty enough to hostess if the writing work falls through. Her brains + beauty just gives her more options for survival until she can put herself where she truly wants to be.

idk, I don't like pieces that blame the fact that the industry merely exists for certain people's discomfort in it. She's uncomfortable because that's not the world she wants to be in, but at least she had that option to choose over being evicted. And when she didn't want to do it anymore, she moved to a friend's, so clearly, she had other options besides this and chose to do it anyway. You can't get mad at the existence of something that you choose to do to support yourself. You may not like what you have to do within it, but if it wasn't even there, where would you be then? Just another example of women needing to be reminded, if you go into this line of work, "use the industry, don't let it use you."
Don't try to win over the haters. You are not the Jerk Whisperer.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

Although I agree that it's unfortunate she felt that way, I certainly wouldn't enjoy working at a club where I am not allowed to choose my customers, and where guys grabbing my ass or other body parts when I walk by is accepted and even encouraged. Working in the sex industry, at any level, doesn't mean one should ever be uncomfortable.

I'm so sick of reading articles by women who were briefly in the industry generalizing their experience to all women in the industry. I love what I do and have worked with many women who felt the same. Sure it's not for everyone and a lot do it as a means to an end (many of who still enjoy it while they do it) but too often I read someones experience as 'I hated it and so I assume all women hate it' which is simply not true. Personally the thought of working 9-5 Mon-Fri under someone else for less than half the pay makes me shudder, but I know a lot of people happily do this.

The mentality seems to be if you use your intelligence, charisma, personality, family wealth, natural talent to get ahead then fair play to you. But god forbid you use your looks to get ahead, you must be shallow and have no other value than to sell your body! I hate it!

I have two friends at uni who dance their way through college, and have expressed similar emotions, but they say it's worth it in the long term.

I'm not a woman so I don't know if it's better or not to have this option.

I mean men can go gay4pay but I'd never do that.

I guess this also means that ugly women are less likely to be able to finish school.
