    FACTS:

I'm going to be interning in an NYC office

It will be during January 2012-till-May

I want to look my age (20's), but still look professional without looking too serious (don't wanna be skanky, frumpy, dumpy, trying-too-hard, or plain--- it is NYC)

I don't know what stores to shop at for -real people- attire

I don't have tons of $$$$$ to blow on clothing. So budget = $ 250-$300 (unpaid internship!)

    Questions:

    What do I buy?

    Where do I buy it?

    How do I rock it?

HELP me out! I love you!

I've always loved pencil skirts. You can pair them with patterned tights since it's probably really cold in NYC. I would shop at The Limited, or Gap. You'll spend a little more $ but the quality is totally worth it. Just make sure you wash your clothes the way the tag says. Also, don't buy tight tops. Your clothes should fit you without clinging to every curve. Good luck!

I'm a fan of pencil skirts with cute tops/cardigans or just slacks and and a pressed top. Business casual is bland by it's own nature, but that's mostly because people don't know how to dress for their body types and are afraid of color with this style.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WTHu...eature=related (this one isn't amazing, but has a few good tips)

Discount outlets like TJMaxx, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls, stores like those should carry all these basics. If you're worried about looking too plain, add a pop of color or an accented accessory.

If you're going to splurge on anything, make it a quality, fitted blazer. You can rock that with almost any outfit and look 10x more put-together than you would otherwise - not to mention it can class up any casual items you may have in your closet. There's tons of chic blazers as well that will maintain the look you're going for. You can wear them with a skirt and otherwise plain/casual tank top/shirt, a nice long necklace, and you're good to go!

I really recommend waiting until you start this job to purchase most of your new wardrobe though. Definitely pick up a few classic pieces (blazer, pencil skirt, etc.) but not too much. I understand that you have a certain look *you* want to go for, but you've got to be cognizant of the corporate culture in regards to dress code. Perhaps this office is more formal/casual than you're expecting, and your attire isn't what you want to stand out. Like, no one wants to be the formal chick in the pencil skirt and blazer when everyone else is wearing nice jeans and shirts or vice versa. Definitely err on the more professional side for your first day, but save the bulk of your shopping for after you've had a chance to work.

Otherwise, good things to keep in mind: keep your shoulders covered, no cleavage, and if you have a short skirt hem, wear tights.

Oh! A common outfit I rocked in the office and many other younger ladies did as well was a long tunic (ie. covers your bum) with leggings (the kind go all the way down your legs... or even opaque tights for that matter) and a blazer or cardigan if it was sleeveless/short-sleeved.

Wet Seal's website has hundreds of outfit ideas.

Its so easy cause you can pick out an outfit you like then buy those pieces without having to guess if theyll look right together

Click on OUTFITS at the top of the page and browse, or click a piece you like and 3 outfit ideas will pop up.
    Congrats on ur internship!

Try H & M, (hm.com) for store locations..or, Idk if they have in your state, discoveryclothing.com
Where I'm going to be, jeans are allowed, but if they're not, I wear nice dress pants, velvet pants (not the 'jeans' style, regular velvet pants,) or one of my preferred looks, long skirt, tights, sweater, & ankle boots or nice clogs

You can totally wear heels, but I wouldn't wear anything over 3 inches.

Banana Republic or J Crew. Also, check out some outlet stores near you.

Victorias Secret actually has a pretty good selection of work wear that is reasonably priced. There's some stuff that looks a little too sexy but they have all the basics: blazers, dress pants, pencil skirts, blouses.

Hit your local thrift store for anything by Theory, Ann Taylor and Banana Republic. $30 at Goodwill should hook you up.

    Congrats, girl!

    Congratulations Sophia Starina!

I want to chime in with my two paisas (cents) as well but I am not sure what kind of office it is where you will be working in. Your attire will largely depend on the nature of the business. An office girl in a doctor's office will have totally different attire than an office girl in stock broker's office.

Zara has very nice very affordable choices. I would not wear very high heels for and internship and do dress for the position you want. Internships are necessary with the economy the way it is so the more serious you take it the better it could be for you especially if you could get a job after.

I go to Reitmans. There is a lot of really ugly stuff lol but I found my two favourite dress pants there and a couple very cute business-casual tops there as well as my "interview blouse" .
I work in an office (paid though, luckily) part time so yeah ... it works for me!

Edit: I'm in Canada but I think Reitmans is in the US as well. I also like Smart Set.

Chaiken trousers are sincerely the best -- you can find them secondhand for under $10. A Calvin Klein blazer. Some Tory Burch flats or a heel that doesn't make a ton of noise on linoleum or wood floors.

So stud earrings and a simple string of pearls-

banana republic. i swear by it.

high heels are not out. just keep them on the conservative side. no bright pink stilletos. hell, i just got sworn into the MD bar and wore leather peep toe pumps that happened to have a 4" heel, at least. the more risque the look of the heel, the lower it should be.

pencil skirts and blazers. oh, and wear tights or stockings, no bare legs. pants are fine too, but make very sure they fight properly, meaning, they dont look like skinny jeans on you.

flatter your figure but do not aim for "sexy."

invest in good pieces, they cost more up front but will last a long time and be timeless (if you pick well. since "trendy" can cost a lot as well).

I would pick up just a few basics for your first few days, like good slacks, one cardigan, a blazer, and a button down.

You'll want to get an idea of what everyone else wears before you shell out $300. Like if all the other women wear business casual pants and cardigans, you don't want to have spent all your money on dresses and blazers.

Banana Republic Outlets are a godsend. You can get quality, timeless clothes for a real steal. Check out consignment stores too.

Once you get an idea of what other people in the office wear, you can go shopping for more items.

I love New York and Company for sweaters, Banana Republic for staples like pants and blazers, and I use Goodwill and places like Ross for the trendy tops or shells to wear with cardigans and jackets.
