I think the set was styled that way because they're trying to "re-create" the famous Marilyn Monroe nude shoot that appeared in Playboy.
The MM was fairly low budget, I suppose, and not really an offical Playboy shoot. It wasn't actually shot for Playboy, it was just a modeling job she took before she got famous out of desperation. She signed away all rights to the photos for whatever small one-time fee they paid her, and after she got famous the photographer sold them to Playboy.
