Default My best hair secret! Baking soda, ACV, coconut oil...

While browsing the Body Business section, I've noticed a lot of you girls have issues with dry, frizzy hair. Now that it's winter, it's only gonna get worse. I spent YEARS battling my hair, and I finally found something that works and lets me have the princess hair that I deserve. I spread the word every chance I get, and I want you guys to try this!

I had course, big, poufy, frizzy, dry hair that my sister always said felt "ethnic". It was damaged from dying it dark to light to dark again and from plenty of heat styling. The first thing I did was take a break from all heat styling. I attempted to embrace my naturally curly hair, but even with expensive hair products and endless YouTube tutorials, I still didn't feel pretty. I need my flat iron. Now with my current hair care regimen, I no longer feel guilty using my flat iron.

Regular shampoos make my hair feel horrible (yes, even ones that are sulfate/phosphate-free). My hair feels *too* clean and gets even bigger and pouffier because shampoo is basically a detergent. Not cool. Now, I will ONLY wash my hair with baking soda. Yep. I put 1 tbsp per cup of water in a little spray bottle and spritz/pour it in sections on my scalp. I use my fingertips to massage it on my scalp a little bit as it doesn't lather. Then rinse. Your hair will feel amazingly clean without stripping out the natural oils that your hair needs. I used to spend SO much money on super fancy shampoos just trying to find something that works. I'm so happy a $3 box of baking soda is now all I need.

After that, because I like to replenish my hair with as much moisture as possible, I use a regular conditioner. My favorite is the Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair Conditioner (http://amzn.to/mnyUkN). I put that in, comb it through, clip my hair up (because I'm prone to bacne), and continue my shower...

...At the end of my shower, I'll thoroughly rinse out the conditioner and then do an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse. This is important. The ACV seals the cuticle, detangles your hair, and makes it super smooth, soft and manageable. I use 1 tbsp ACV with 1 cup of water and dump it over my head. Rinse with cool water.

Seriously. I can't even TELL you guys how this has changed my life. I can run my flat iron down my hair with one swipe, and it will lay perfectly. Before, my hair would be too damn frizzy to look right no matter how many times I flat ironed the same section.

Now for deep conditioning: COCONUT OIL. About once a month, I will coat my hair with coconut oil, comb it through, then sleep with either a shower cap or plastic bag on my head, and wash it out when I wake up. FYI, this is the ONLY time I will use a regular shampoo. The oil is somewhat stubborn to wash out, so I will use a harsh detergent (shampoo). The treatment leaves my hair feeling like fucking SILK, so it cancels out the regular shampoo. You guys must do this. And report back. I've already made so many of my friends jump on the coconut oil bandwagon.

This is my absolute favorite brand of coconut oil: http://amzn.to/vhYQ7V Make sure it's extra virgin!! I buy it at local co-ops or health/natural food stores. My favorite co-op sells two-- one meant for just hair and skin, and one (my fave) used for cooking. It's an all-purpose oil and I really use it for everything. Hair, lotion/body oil, styling oil (sometimes), cooking, I eat it with a spoon, and I also use it as a lube. It's great for maintaining vaginal health and it even helps keep yeast infections at bay.

So, that's what I do and I swear by it. My hair looks the best it's ever looked, it's the healthiest it's ever been, and also the longest it's ever been! Try this shit out and let me know what you think.

    MINE?:

    - once-weekly overnight organic extra virgin olive oil treatment
    - argan oil put directly on the lower half of my hair (a couple drops) every couple days
    - washing my hair 2-3x a week
    - using baby power on my roots when it gets oily... which is like, everyday lol (there may be a healthier powder out there though)

My Hair Type: Fine hair strands but lots of hair, oily roots and dry ends, straight-wavy

I've never done an olive oil treatment! Maybe I'll try that. I LOVE Moroccan Oil and Argan Oil, too. I use the oil on my ends straight out of the shower and once again after I'm done with the flat iron. I'm also a huge fan of dry shampoo since I recently cut my hair washing days down to once a week! Keep sharing your ultimate hair tips!!

    GREAT ADVICE, SLUTDUST!

I got the girls at my club oiling their hair. They're tired of their extensions. However, some don't get that you have to consider the genetic and lifestyle factors that come into play with the health and condition of your hair and how well it grows.

ACV is a great rinse... I used to "make" my own shampoo, which was an infusion of chamomile and something else (I forget, its been awhile lol) and a little bit of Bronners soap. It didnt suds up, and it cleaned my hair without stripping it. Afterwards, Id do the ACV rinse.

When I have that routine, I dont even need to use conditioner, and I only did a deep condition once a month with olive oil. Coconut oil is a really good one too, but olive oil is cheaper lol

I never had a bad hair day....ever. My hair totally behaved, I could go longer without having to put a relaxer in it because it was smooth and was incredibly touchable. I got lazy and stopped making my infusions though, and when I started using reg shampoo and conditiner, I noticed the difference immediatly.

Definitely going to try, the only oils I currently use are Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which I put on my hair everyday since it's really dry..and Castor Oil. It's great for your lashes/eyebrows if they are sparse!

Also, as an alternative to the stripping shampoos, I would suggest Bentonite Clay. It's great for the face, well all over the body. And it's really a hair mask, since it dries and becomes hard. Mix the clay with water or Apple Cider Vinegar, apply to hair, let it dry, wash and your hair should feel like buttttaaa baby. Great for those with curly hair as well.

Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, American Apparel, Amazon all sell this stuff. It's great shit. Inexpensive too.

I got curious so I looked it up...images came up and I was like...omg I have that! I have that? Why do I have that?!

...then remembered, I got it about 6mths ago, but never cracked it open. I read that it was really good for the skin, some rave reviews, and I immediately ordered it off Amazon for next to nothing (I do recall it was super cheap) and then never used it.

Now that I know its also good for the hair, (and remember that I have it lol) Im going to have to really give it a try. Maybe tomorrow, and Ill try it with the ACV cause I love that stuff... Ill let you know how it goes

I do something similar. I shampoo with a tea tree oil shampoo first. After that, apply wet baking soda on my scalp(don't rinse) then pour on the acv. It fizzles in my scalp. Feels good. I rinse, then condition.

I just ordered organic jamaican black castor oil for the hair. I'll write reviews on it after I'm done w it.

    Will do

I also forgot to mention rose water. I like to spray that all over my hair after washing it, damp. It makes it smell good and kills any vinegar smell that may stay.

    Bump!

I've washed my hair like this for the past few days (consequently after running out of shampoo) and my hair feels like a baby's ass. Just wanted to thank you again!

One question though: do you dilute the acv, or do you pour it on straight? I've not had a problem just going straight but have read that some dilute it.

Bumping! I never heard of this technique. This is great advice!! I hate how most shampoos strip my hair and even having to over condition and I hate adding oil just to give it some extra protection. But this method sounds great and cheap too!

I dilute the ACV, about 2Tb to a quart of water.

I tried the baking soda wash..I put about 1/4C baking soda in 2C water to make it easier to put into my hair and distribute... It felt like I was just washing my hair with water, but when I started washing my hair out, it felt like a mop, seriously...like no slip or softness to it at all.

After I did the ACV rinse, it was very soft, and then I air dried and styled my hair and it came out soooo nice!! Mind you, I have 4b/c hair, and I havnt relaxed my hair in almost 3 months so usually it takes a lot to make it behave at this point. The only product I put into it was the 3Day straight before I let it air dry, then I flat ironed it and my hair had so much movement, was incredibly shiny and at the end of the day, after all the Xmas festivities, my style didnt fall flat at all and still looked great.

I dont think I can do the baking soda wash everytime I wash my hair, because I can tell it totally stripped everything from my hair, but maybe once a month to take care of buildup.

It's great that ur sharing these hair regimens with other women who doesn't know about them. For me it's nothing new, because my grandma used baking soda to wash her hair for a very very long time because they couldn't afford shampoo. Baking soda can be used for a multitude of things for ur body. The vinegar rinse is used by a lot of curly girls to help retain moisture and what not. Also there are some natural and organic shampoos that do a great job. I typically use Aubrey Organics and the miss Jessie's super sudsy slip shampoo is amazing. Because ur hair feels moisturized and soft afterwards. If u want to know mor regimens or products that will actually help your hair, there's tons of blogs and sites such as keepitsimplesista.ning.com
    That one is very informative!

I know this sounds a bit much but I am paranoid of the aluminum in baking soda. Do you think if I use aluminum free baking soda it would work?

I was curious about this, cause I thought baking soda was just sodium bicarbonate, which isnt and doesnt have aluminum in it so I did a quick google search on it to make sure. I think you are confusing baking soda with baking powder, which can have aluminum in it and comes in aluminum-free varieties?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_bicarbonate
    http://www.enotes.com/baking-soda-reference/baking-soda

I confuse the two all the time myself...I try to remember that baking soda is the stuff you put in the fridge to keep it smelling fresh, and like drinking soda is kept in the fridge too, on the other hand, baking powder is the stuff you use in baking, and like flour, powders are kept in the cabinet.

I read this about 2 months ago and have been trying it out. I'm very happy with the results and the huge amount of cash I'm saving on hair products. Thank you for posting this!
(BTW, I've got coarse, wavy, thick, dyed- darker hair)
I've also noticed a huge improvement in my normally oversensitive and irritable scalp skin.
I've tried using a bit of coconut oil as a leave-in, but don't really love the texture when I do. I think it's because coconut oil is only liquid over 75 degrees and is solid in cooler temps (like an air conditioned room) I'm just guessing here though. I'm going to try mixing coconut oil with jojoba oil (always liquid and also a great skin moisturizer) to see how that feels.

Ohh Im glad this came back up. Im going to wash my hair with the baking soda thing again...its been awhile

Yeah kermit, Im sure that is the reason actually. I dont think coconut oil is the best thing to use as a leave in because of how it solidifies...even if mixed with other oils, it will still harden up and make your hair feel different and heavy, but its great as an oil treatment before washing your hair.

    I'm going to try this!

I have thick, long, curly (more like tight waves than actual loops) red hair, so very dry. Any moisture in the air and it frizzes, the curls drop rather quickly, even at work half way through a shift it just looks messy to me, not curly any more.

[aside- quite interested in the not-washing-at-all idea. i've read that once you get past the disgusting greasy weeks, it's healthier, just needs rinsing with water and conditioning weekly.]

Have you heard of hair plopping? I came across it recently, and have heard some great reviews about it, and have been meaning to try it with my daughters hair. She has thick, long, curly hair too, and plopping is for that hair type...supposedly, it helps keep the hair a lot more defined, cuts the frizz effect and tames it. Kiddo has waist length hair, and her curls are ringlets, though you cant tell it halfway through the day cause it looks more like a fuzzy wuzzy frizz factory lol

Anyway, heres a link to it...Ill see if I can get around to finally trying it on kiddo by the weekend, lemme know if you try it too!
