Default What's the point of your life?

    No, I'm not suicidal lol
I was just wondering what you girls feel is the point of your existence?
I feel like all the things I do are geared toward making my life better.
I work so I can buy things.
I go to school so i can get a job and buy more things.
I mean one day i'll die and I'm just wondering what was the point of my being on earth for 80 years doing things to make myself happy?
    Seems pointless
Even if I help others aren't they just doing the same thing?
    Idk

If you're happy then it's not pointless. I've spent a lot of time thinking about this as well, it can be depressing when you realise just how little anything you do actually matters or you can flip it around and find it liberating - if your whole life barely matters then all the little things that worry you mean even less in the grand scale of things.

Just try and enjoy life without getting in the way of other people's happiness. There is no meaning to my existence except the meaning I give it through enjoyment I give myself and others.

I feel you. I take a very nihilistic approach to certain things as well but then I also suffer from chronic depression. :/ I often find myself laying my goals out and there will be a voice that goes "There is no point to this. Any of it. It makes no difference in the scheme of things." I think that's why religion was invented. It's a nice thought to believe you're working towards something.

Life has whatever purpose you assign to it. My personal purpose is to find my complete self, the me I see when I go to sleep at night. I may expire with that being the only thing I do (if I manage to do it), but that's the purpose I've decided to focus on.

I think in general, if you live soley for yourself, you will come across this question at some point in your life. As 'higher beings' I think we are all meant to do more that just survive until we die. I think a big part of being happy and having self worth is knowing that some part of society is better off because you are in their life.

It could be friends, family, people you help volunteering, a lonely customer that you get to know...etc..

For me.....the point of my life is raising 2 great kids, being a great partner for my wife, & being a great friend.

    Live, Party, Die.

Living in simplicity has always been the most enjoyable points of my life. Having a hobby you're passionate about, taking care of your body/mind, traveling, music, good food, and interesting conversation.

I guess the way I get through day to day without questioning the big picture is enjoying the small things.

i think a good use of your life is to somehow combining the spiritual and physical and finding the balance between the two.

Not being too spiritual to the point where you're heads always up in the clouds and you're not grounded, and not too physical enough to the point where you forget there's a higher purpose to us being here and making every goal materialistic.

Thanks for ur replies u guys
Im just feeling so bla'se about the next how ever many years of life ya know?
Im the type of person where I like to feel productive, like Im accomplishing something important. Then I realize nothing is really important and it just kinda dampens my whole outlook on things.
I have to put those thoughts aside so I can enjoy whatever this world has to offer....
    pointless as it may seem!

What you are experiencing is result of an evolved sophisticated mind. We have our future and our past both beyond our reach but our present never really lasts. So where do we really exist? This leaves us in a very confused state of mind. This whole thing reminds me of a song in Hindi which goes something like this. "The tomorrow is already gone. It is better to spend all your life in today."

As far as the worthiness of our life is concerned. We have two states - being dead and being alive. Once we are dead, nothing will matter. Once we are alive, we have tons of things to do. We have to take care of our family. We have to be there for our friends. And, while we are doing all this we have to sneak a few moments of happiness for ourselves. The happiness often results from pursuit of goals that give us a sense of accomplishment. The important thing to remember is that do not get carried away with the worldly things for we will die one day. No one is going to get out of this life alive. But until the day we die, we have to take care of our Karma. So it all boils down to the middle path as outlined by Buddha thousands of years ago. Therein lies our true happiness.

I agree with this but I don't feel my actions are restricted to people I have large interactions with. I like to think my comments on forums, the smile and hello I give to a stranger at the shops, the car a wave through in front of me in heavy traffic etc etc, are all given a small positive boost by my small positive gesture. Maybe that flows on to put them in a good mood so when they go home to an empty house, or yelling kids or whatever they can give the kids/cat a hug instead of a scowl or a kick, which puts them in a good mood so they go on to do something small yet positive for someone who goes on to do something positive, and maybe that 5th person who was affected positively is the one who is made to feel good about themselves long enough to push through a problem which ends up being the cure for cancer or something.
    You know, the butterfly effect.
Maybe I'm nuts, but it helps me to keep smiling and be happy knowing I'm doing something meaningful even if it's just a small thing.

Ghandi said, "everything we do is insignificant, yet it's still incredibly important that we do it." Something I've always tried to remember in times of feeling like a speck within an infinitely large universe.

For most, our time on earth comes and goes somewhat unnoticed, like a whisper. For a very select few, our existence will shape and form the way people live their lives for centuries to come. And yet, we are all incredible marvels. There is no human being exactly like you, or exactly like me. When you think about everything that had to fall perfectly in place just so you could be conceived, and then the incredible odds you defied to be born AND the fact that you're still here.....well, that's nothing short of miraculous. The emotions we feel are so powerful, they can be healing and life saving. Likewise, we can experience a depression so deep, our bodies begin to wither and decay. Music sways and moves us in a way that we can't really explain. We have an overwhelming desire to feel, see and touch other people and will die faster if we're deprived of human contact...everything we are is set up in such a perfect way that it meshes with the delicate balance of life and there's something awe inspiring about it. So, try not to take it for granted, even if you feel like your life has very little purpose.

My reason for living is simply enjoying the gift of life, and I've also been so incredibly honored to be a mother and bring another marvel into the world.

Wow thats a great quote. This is exactly the sort of little gems that make me so glad I found this forum.

I was going to say that my biggest revelation in life was realising that nothing matters. It's all irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. We are simply creatures who happened to evolve on this rock in the cosmos. At first that struck me as kind of a depressing thought. If everyone who is alive at this point in time is dead in 100 years what does any of it matter?

It matters because we give our own meaning to life. Some people find meaning in religion. Some people find meaning in family. The list is potentially endless - career, love, passion, money, travel, charity, drugs etc. By convincing yourself that any of these things are important (and who's to say they're not) we give meaning to our own lives. That's the reason we get out of bed in the morning. To do the things that matter to us.

Which is why I love that quote so much. Ghandi knew it's all irrelevant/insignificant. But it doesnt detract from the fact that there is no greater meaning or reason we live our lives.

But that's just my point of view. Who knows maybe I'm wrong, maybe (hopefully) there is an afterlife where we all live in eternal bliss.

Gandhi was a textbook example of Madhaya Maarg (The Middle Path) that Buddha proposed thousands of years ago. He understood that the key to happiness was in finding a balance between Karma and Maya. Your attachment to material things in this world is your Maya. At the same time, you should not be too detached from this world that you would stop caring about your Karma. Karma is your worldly obligations that you must meet. It could be as simple as doing your best at the school and getting good grades if you are a student.

Gandhi had no attachment to worldly things. He refused to hold any public office after India's independence even though he could have been the first Prime Minister of independent India if he wanted to. He never forgot that the life was temporary. He knew that he was not here to amass expensive cars and real estates. He was truly a great man.

Have fun, Be yourself, Promote/Profit for yourself but DO GOOD FOR OTHERS.

WIthout the last part, the first three are irrelevant. Without the first three, you can't really do well on the last part - eventually you will snap.

Live Well by Doing Good is my motto, and why all of my businesses donate 10% of profits (and Pinups4.com does 15% of gross) to charity. And why I volunteered 5 years of my life

For the life of me, I can't remember where I heard or read this, and I'm hoping it's not lyrics to some shitty pop-alternative song or something like that, but when I think about the nature of human existence, I think about how I once heard that man is the coinciding point between beast and spirit. We have so much lowliness, but at the same time, so much opportunity for transcendence. I can't pretend to know a "point" to much of anything, but I think part of being "happy" (which is such a difficult term to use, because its meaning changes by generation) is having awe for the beauty in earthly experiences and also working to transcend the lowliness of mortal life. This is related in my head, but not really in answer to the OP, but a way I "judge" whether my views on life line up with others in important ways is how they say they feel when they look up at night and see all of the stars. Some people feel discouraged by it, they say it makes them feel "insignificant." I like the people who say it's amazing that everything else is so grand.
