    Default Curly hair....

Ladies with curly hair, what do you do when you don't wear it straight? I am really trying to get my hair back to healthy, so I am avoiding heat at all costs. I have noticed it becoming more and more curly since I've been doing this. I use a tiny bit of conditioner after I get out of the shower as a leave in, and Aveda Be Curly, and Suave perfectly curly spray gel, which I love by the way. I use a wide toothed comb and scrunch, then just let it dry, or use a diffuser, or both.

Any tips? What do you guys do?

I don't even use gel. I distribute a nickel sized blob of shine serum through the last half of it and air dry it, preferably something with silicone in it. I only wash my hair the night before, and always tie it up loosely before going to bed. Come to think of it, I only wash it twice a week really.

You'll love heat free. I haven't blow dried my hair in a year. It's pretty great.

Leave in conditioner and shine serum and a tiny tiny bit of spray gel. I put shine serum on my fingers then kind of twirl it around the curls of the top layer of my hair so that the individual locks of curls stay more intact.

Also, I never use regular towels anymore for my hair, i use 100% cotton shirts and rather than rubbing or twisting it, i gently squeeze out water then turban my hair in it, really decreases frizz.

Usually if I sleep with wet hair i'll throw in a couple foam rollers for shape/volume.

I don't have curly hair but I heard some girls who like to go the all natural route by applying a small amount of jojoba or argan oil throughout their hair when it's damp. Once it dries they're left with really pretty frizz-free curls.

My daughter has very curly hair, and what I do for her hair is after she washes and conditions, I use a frizz serum when its very wet, then when its somewhat dry, I use coconut oil or if I have it shea butter and run a bit of that through her hair and let it air dry. That keeps the curls defined without the wet/greasy look, and really cuts down on it getting poofy by the end of the day.

If she wants a smoother/straigther look, then she washes her hair the night before, and I do the same as above except Ill put it into a braid. By the time she wakes up, its still quasi damp, but she'll take the braid out and just run her fingers through it and it'll be more wavy than curly.

When she does her hair by herself, which is most of the time...after she washes it, she doesnt put any product in it....she just wears it down till the curls start poofing out, and then she puts it up in a bun for the rest of the day.

I only heat style her hair for special occasions. Every so often when her hair starts getting very frizzy or tangles, then I know its time for a trim, which I do about twice a year.....other than that, I dont do anything special to it. Her hair is pretty healthy and long too...it comes down to her butt.

I have naturally wavy hair but it's really soft, so curl cremes and gels are too heavy for me. After I wash I use argan oil from the midlengths to the ends. When it's about halfway dry (air dry, I don't blow dry) I tie it up in a bun/knot to keep the curls from frizzing. When its completely dry, I take it down, brush out the waves a little, then rake some shine creme through with my fingertips to define the waves.

I love this: http://Kinky-Curly.com It's sold @ Whole Foods/Target too. I use their 'knot today' detangler, you can in or not. They have a curl definer that is raved about in a jar which I haven't tried
Also heard great things about John Frieda 3 day straightner. haven't tried it either.
I love the Pureolgy serum. I rarely use heat on my hair, it's got a very strong wave, even @ its length, & tends to frizz. There's more stuff, I have to look @ what's in my bath, lol. Good luck

When it was longer, I would use hair polish and put it in a french braid. It would result in my curls looking a little more organized, because they are naturally quite...erm...unruly. My hair is pretty short now, but I still use coconut oil daily and it makes it soft and manageable. I usually have a problem with dryness and split ends, but coconut oil seems to help out with that.

John Friedas 3-Day actually does work...amazingly well.

My daughter and I have totally different hair types, but we both have thick hair. I have a mixture of kinky/curly/straight hair...mostly kinky that comes to my shoulders, and my daughter has spiraly curly hair that is bra-strap length when curly, and down to her butt when straight....

I go about 4mths without relaxing my hair because of this stuff, and it keeps my hair straight for 2 days, by the third its starting to revert but it still looks good...I cant go for more than 3 days without washing my hair anyway. Kiddo will go as long as she can since I rarely heat style her hair and she likes it straight...and hers will stay totally straight for up to 3 days, after that the last couple days its starts getting wavy.

    Its truly awesome stuff

My Denman brush is a lifesaver: http://www.amazon.com/Denman-D3-Styl...4356824&sr=8-8

Separates and defines my curls with NO struggle. I love it to death. I don't use leave-ins because I haven't found any that work well on my hair. I use conditioners like Aussie and Herbal Essence for that, mostly. Not the best route, but my hair hasn't freaked out on me about it yet.

I rub in some oil (coconut at the moment) and then plop to help define and enhance the curls and then just wear it down - plopping gives some really nice volume, and my hair ends up looking very sexy and bombshell as my hair doesn't curl super tight, but has loser curls. Sometimes I'll push it back off my face with a cute headband.

I second about not blow drying it. My hair looks a lot better when I let it dry naturally. Also, I find when I keep my hair shorter (below but not much below my shoulders)it doesn't frizz as much.

I have naturally loose curly hair. While wet, I twirl random strands and always the top of my head to give some volume. During the spring and summer, I was wearing a lot of big flower clips on the side and pulling my hair over the opposite shoulder. Or half my hair up with a cute clip in the back.

It took me SIX MONTHS to completely quit the hot tools. I tossed the flat iron and curling iron a while back but kept blowing it straight. Finally after a full 2 days of trying different ways to style my hair without any heat, including the blow dryer I found (after many many years) my natural curly/wavy hair. It like to be almost air dried and then I do 2 french braids which I only need to leave in for a couple hours. The result is very beautifully bohemian. My hair has never been healthier or shiner or grown faster! Life is so much easier without all those products and tools.

Anyways.......Avoid products with a lot of silicone. They dry your hair up and kill the curls. Also avoid products with a lot of protein (aka keratin). By doing this you can use a sulfate free shampoo. Sulfates also suck the life and softness out of hair and especially curly hair.

Ohhh and also I only wash my hair now maybe once a week and then sometimes just used conditioner (no shampoo). Oils are great. I love jojoba for softness and shine and fighting frizz and coconut for a leave it after washing and overnight before washing I use it generously. Also castor oil is great on the scalp and ends the night before washing.

You may want to try pin curls or braids. pin curls gives more of a deep wave and I'll be doing those once my hair is longer. Braids and pin or bun curls help give curly hair direction (unless your hair is SUPER curly.) And fights frizz which is the issue I was having when air drying. Ok I think I'm done now...good luck! Patience. It's stupid hard to go from "doing your hair" regularly to au nautural but sooooo worth it!

I really dislike sulfates in shampoos now.... I can tell a difference immediately if I accidentally use one!

I don't see how I could ever go 100% shampoo free, however I have cut way back. I now shampoo every few days, and just use a somewhat clarifying (but color safe) shampoo to get rid of all the product buildup. I am using Giovanni tea tree shampoo, which I LOVE! I am also using dry shampoo like whoa.... some cheap one in a white bottle I bought a Walgreens that dries clear not white, I love it. Ironically, all the stylists at the last salon I went to, a Davines salon, were using this dry shampoo. It helps give volume, root lift, and hold so I don't have to cake on hairspray.

I tried plopping yesterday..... I need better leave in products though. Currently I am just using a small amount of my regular conditioner.

Ok so I tried plopping tonight. All I put in was a nickel sized amount of anti-frizz serum.

WOW!!!! is all I can say. I left it up for half an hour and my very wavy / curly in places hair came out almost in ringlets!!

I met the lady who makes that stuff. She was really nice and seemed to know what she was talking about when it comes to hair products.
