Default A Coffee Maker for my Dad for Christmas...

My Dad is a coffee drinker like millions of Americans, however he prefers the instant "coffee mix" filled with sugar and fillers. Basically the coffee with no benefit from the bean. He is a simple man, and he thinks that it's a hassle grinding the beans and all that jazz. For Christmas I want to get my Dad a high quality coffee maker so that he can get the benefit from the real coffee bean.

Can you recommend a good coffee maker that's easy to use and that isn't a hassle to set up and clean? Something with an automatic timer maybe? I don't know much about coffee because I don't drink it, but I know I don't want to spend more than $200 for one.

    Thanks for your help!

Nespresso makes coffee in under a minute from little plastic capsules that cost fifty cents. I got a red one at Best Buy. Just about $200.

Bunn makes a consumer model for about $99, if he wants to make more than one cup at a time

A keurig would make a perfect gift!! And because they are becoming so popular, I heard that Starbucks and other coffee companies are gonna start making cups for them as well. So he'll have a lot of variety to choose from, as well as it being simple to use.

I'll throw out an alternate opinion. Even though the Keurig machines do bring 'pressure brewing' into the picture, unless you want to go through the huge hassle of separately grinding and packing your own coffee into the 'snap-open' Keurig refillable pods, you're stuck having to purchase coffee blends that Starbucks or Green Mountain or another commercial coffee house has selected, pre-ground, and pre-packed into Keurig k-cups for you. And of course, the unit price of the k-cup pods is ridiculously expensive ... which is no big deal if you only brew one or two cups a day but adds up in a hurry if you drink more than that.

The Nespresso machines are basically an upscale variant of the Keurig machines. They use ( Keurig incompatible ) 'capsules'. The one thing the Nespresso machines can do that the Keurig machines can't is make actual espresso instead of just straight coffee. You can also find lots more 'gourmet' coffees in Nespresso 'capsules' than in Keurig k-cups ( so far at least ). But in the $200 price range, you're only going to get a 'manual' machine. Also, with both machines, if you want your morning coffee to have 'ballz' you're limited to purchasing from a very limited number of 'high octane' k-cups or capsules ( since you really can't adjust brew strength by any means other than having more coffee packed into the k-cup or capsule to start with ).

As an alternative, in the same price range, you might consider ... which is a combination bean grinder and brewer. You pour roasted beans of your own choosing in the top, and they're freshly ground for every pot ! I own one of these, and I previously owned an earlier model over which this new design is significantly improved. And of course with the built-in grinder you have the freedom to buy whole bean coffee in Starbucks or Green Mountain or another commercial coffee house blends at less than 1/4 of the unit price of the k-cup pods, or you can buy 'pure' coffee beans ( I'm a sucker for 100% Kona ), or even blend your own ( example mix a bag of Dunkin Donuts blended beans with a bag of 100% Kona beans ) - . You can adjust the brew strength from coffee colored water to near espresso high viscosity LOL ! It also has a pre-settable timer so that you can wake up with a freshly brewed pot just finishing up and waiting for you ! However, the 'bad side' is that the Capresso coffee maker above doesn't 'pressure brew', it drip brews ... which means you don't get the 'crema' that makes coffee ultra-smooth.

Actually I was discussing the subject of coffee brewing while sipping a 'morning after' espresso at a beachfront bar not too long ago. The gentleman I was having that discussion with just sent me 'this' as an early christmas present ... ... which provides the best of both worlds in terms of 'pressure brewing' plus 'fresh grinding' for every cup, plus the ability to brew espresso's, capucino's, even herbal teas ! Obviously I didn't wait until christmas to fire up this baby !!! I'm in love !!! ( with the coffee machine, not the guy LOL !!! )

^^^ to be truthful, I wasn't 'soliciting' anything from this guy ( or any guy for that matter ) other than some 'morning after' conversation and some 'high octane' espresso to counteract my Patron Margarita induced hangover. But considering that he rented a 40ft catamaran for the week while on vacation down here way south of the border, and considering that he was wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Titanium diving wristwatch, the Jura coffee machine undoubtedly fell in his 'chump change' category !

PS my 'christmas present' makes better espresso than the 'professional' Rancilio machine behind that beachfront bar ... and without having to manually 'pack' ground coffee into the little metal coffee scoops or clean up afterwards.

We got a krueig for christmas, and there is more stuff than I ever imagined available in those K cups. And yes, Melonie is right, it is expensive. Mostly I will continue to drink Folgers Black Silk or Gourmet Supreme by the gallon.

^^^ yeah the Keurig machines were a 'phenomenon' when they first came out a few years ago ... then interest seemed to die down, probably due to the limited number of pre-filled K-Cup coffee blends available. But this year, more coffee blend suppliers are going after K-Cup market share. And that now apparently includes a few 'specialty' coffee types ( with one being a 100% Kona blend from Tully's that I actually like a lot ).

But the fact remains that you're typically paying $30 per pound for pre-filled K-Cup coffee, as opposed to > $12 per pound for Starbucks / Dunkin etc. ground coffee, as opposed to < $10 per pound for whole bean coffee. If you only brew one or two cups per day, who cares ! But if you brew more than that, the cost premium for the K-Cup convenience REALLY adds up in a hurry.

I did find higher octane K-Cups today but they aren't cheap, like you said.
