Thumbs down Attack of the Cramps..

I know I'm not the only one who gets horrendous cramps every month. I'm talking about debilitating, can't go to work, went to the ER before they were so bad cramps. I've had a sonogram, and there doesn't appear to be anything medically wrong with me - I'm just one of the "lucky" ones.

How do you combat the dreaded cramps? Do you find that changing your diet or any other lifestyle changes have helped? (I already know to avoid caffeine, especially coffee, during the danger zone).

    Thanks ladies!!

ETA: I have previously had issues with opiate addiction, so any heavy duty painkillers are out of the question. I also try to avoid NSAIDS for liver-related reasons, but will take them if absolutely necessary.

I got birth control.. I really got it so I didn't need to worry about getting pregnant but it seems I'm the rare few that don't get my period or cramps cause of it. You should of seen how scared I was not getting the cramps when it came to be my first period after the Birth control.

But I would cut the salt, drink lots of water. My cramps would hurt less when I was eating alot of oranges and apples.

And Discunted How much water are you drinking and are you drinking any high amounts of tea?

I've heard really good things about Cramp Bark supplements. I haven't tried it personally, but I've had several friends recommend it.

The most common cause for this is endometriosis.

Blackstrap molasses because of the iro and magnesium.

Discuntent--you might have cramps because of low levels of magnesium
and potassium. Look up what foods have each of these and see if you're
hardly ever eating them. If that's the case, introduce them to your diet,
or through epsom salt baths (magnesium only, no potassium.)

If you do have a lot of magnesium and potassium in your diet...
doesn't excess lactic acid, and possibly uric acid contribute to ,
among other things, muscle problems because your lymph system is backed
up? I'd have to double check that as I haven't read up on that in awhile
and am only hesitantly recalling vague memories of stuff read so I
    could be wrong.

Check out "cramps" on earthclinic.com and maybe peruse people's pharmacy
    website.

Back to Blackstrap Molasses--works great, tastes funky so mix with water or
some liquid to get down, 1-3 tablespoons up to three times a day. Cuts constipation
in a fairly pleasant way too.

otherwise, 1600mgs of ibprofen if you don't have any organ issues that would preclude taking
a high dose of OTC painkillers.

If you get stomach cramps and doctors have found nothing wrong with you after sonograms and endoscopy. Then there is a good chance that you may have what they call IBS. No one knows why IBS occurs but fortunately there are medicines that treat the symptoms. You should consult a good gastroenterologist to see what is happening.

This thread is actually about menstrual cramps. I'm sorry if that was unclear in the first post.

Discuntent, my gyno says if you feel cramping on one side or the other when not menstruating, you may be feeling yourself ovulate.

Some people do experience painful ovulation.

Extremely painful cramping is a red flag symptom for endometriosis. (Ruled out in my case, but you should consult your gyno about it). Here's some FAQ:
    http://www.bioscience.org/books/endomet/end34-65.htm

A sonogram can also help rule out any ovarian cysts, which are another cause of painful cramping in that area.

    Good luck.

I used to get horrible debilitating cramps every time I got my period. My only solution was to basically keep a consistent stream of ibuprofen going in. Then I went on birth control and it's helped A LOT. I still get some cramps but they are nowhere near as bad as they were - half the time I don't have to take anything for them. If you're not on birth control already, I would really recommend it.

I've had severe cramps that would last for hours since I was 11 years old. After I had my daughter 2 years ago, they have been sooooo much better. Sometimes I don't even get cramps. My mother endured the same thing until she had me. smh, I wonder what that's all about.

Ouch. Sorry about your cramps, I've definitely been there with the whole "so much pain would it be better to pace this out or curl up in the fetal position". Although I've never been able to get away from them completely, I've found two things to help. One, soybeans. I don't know why, but if I eat about half a cup whenever I start to feel the beginnings of cramps, it makes them stop for the next couple hours. The next thing I do is take one painkiller (low does Tylenol or aspirin) with a cup of coffee. The caffeine makes the painkillers work faster and the coffee part cleans you out, per se. I’ve found cramps to be so much less painful if my bowels are empty. Two things that seem to my cramps worse are anything with raspberries in it (raspberries are actually supposed to make contractions more powerful and are used to induce labor) and anything that has parsley in it. Hope these help.

There's no such thing as cramps so bad you have to go to the ER with no cause other than menstruation. Don't let ANYONE tell you that's "normal".

If a sonogram showed nothing, it's most likely endometriosis, which doesn't show up on a sonogram. You can only see it during surgery.

Other than BC, painkillers, surgery, or Lupron injections (for extreme cases ONLY) there are ways to manage it naturally through diet. Try getting the book called "The Endometriosis Diet", I've heard it works for many women.

I'm back to post more info...sorry for the short post earlier but I was short on time

Anyway, I just wanted to say I'VE BEEN THERE! I have stage 4 endo that doesn't respond to medical treatment so if there's a treatment for endo, I've probably been on it. Surgery didn't remove enough to lessen my pain - in fact, it seemed like it got worse. NSAIDs don't work AT ALL - I was taking 12 Aleves on a daily basis, I'm surprised I didn't start bleeding internally. Opiates did take the edge off but as you know you can't stay on those long-term. My doctor's last resort was the Lupron injection, and while that has helped the pain a lot, I now have a whole host of other problems - brittle bones and cavities in my teeth from calcium loss, horrible migraines, general body soreness, and absolutely horrible depression.

So my best advice is to look for a gyno that specializes in endo treatment. A typical gyno deals mostly with pregnancy and not so much with gynacological diseases. A specialist will be able to suggest alternative treatments and manage the disease more effectively. This is where I'm at - I'm trying to get into a specialist next month and then I'm thinking of seeing a natural healing specialist and getting off the Lupron.

    Good luck!
