Default keeping money in the house, safe? or secret place?

I'm gonna be moving into a new apartment by myself and also, I'm going to start saving my money in cash at home instead of depositing it into the bank (at least a big part of it). So I'm thinking of buying a safe. But at the same time what do I really need the safe for? If somebody breaks into the house and they see the safe they automatically know there's something of value in there and the y take it (unless it's bolted which is not an option). Wouldn't it be better just to hide the money somewhere?

I hate keeping money in the house. There was a time when I had to, over one Summer, and I hid it at the bottom of a giant tampon box

good tip! I think that'd be a good place. I hate keeping it at the house, too but I think in my situation it's better. Under the matress and in the freezer are played out, right?
But tbh if I live in a gated high-rise who's gonna break in? And I'm not gonna have random people over, anyways.. I still feel like I should hide it though.

Hahaha i love the tampon box idea. Absolute classic! Burglars are not going to be looking in there!

Personally I put mine in the cover of a cushion on my bed.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

I was talking about this today.....
I think there are many options in saving money in your house. A fire proof safe is a good idea. You can buy them in all sizes and can keep your contents safe for up to 1-2 hours at 1000 degrees, which i think is rare in a building fire ( that it would be 1000 degrees for that long ) . Thats all I know about that. You could bolt it down somewhere really hard to find if its only small.
My girlfriend told me she digs a hole under a tree.
There are heaps of places to hide it but i would prefer to keep it somewhere fire proof.
Its risky keeping it in your house though, especially if your talking big amounts of money. I used to get stressed every time I left the house!!
I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”

something less obvious. i dont know, they will find a way to see and take the safe. i used to put it in the bedside table, in my underwear draw, with my taxes... sometimes all at once.... and then i ran out of money and suddenly found 100 when i needed it the most.
    yep.
i need to trick my brain or i will spend spend spend

I used to just put it in some drawer, too. I kinda want a safe but I feel like something stupid is gonna happen, I don't know...
I wanna keep it at home because I wanna save it and when it's on my account I just use it more carelessly. Also, I don't like depositing it on my way home from work.

i have a net savings account in my card savings account so i deposit money into the regular account then hop online and transfer it to the savings so you cant access it via an atm unless you transfer it back first.
though that fucked me hard when i ran out of internet and money and my last ever bit of money was online in that account.....
keep it in several places. i like to keep about 30 50 in my account incase idont know decide to stay over somewhere and not bring cash or something, and bring under 50 in wallet.

so when i go out [not night out but just carrying on life things] i have 50 cash and 50 in savings its not enough to spend carelessly but will still get you out of a pickle.

yeah im weird like that too

yeah it's weird. i'm an online shopping addict so having money in there is bad for me. When I first started I counted it at home and made little stacks and it really helped me save.. I'm just paranoid which is why I think I need a safe. But I'm almost certain I won't be able to open it/forget the combo

I'm thinking about just renting a safe deposit box at the bank. That way it's safe, I can't access it easily, and no one knows how much I have. >.>

I have a friend who digs holes in his yard and marks them on his gps so he can find them later.

Hide it in the freezer! Dont hide it anywhere in the bedroom, that's where anyone who breaks in goes first.
The best solution is a safe deposit box at the bank though, isn't that an option for you?

I second safety deposit box. You gotta be more clever than drawers and safes and moveable objects. Imagine a meth head breaks in. Taped in a flat envelope to the underside of heavy furniture has my vote.

Whatever you do DON'T put it in the freezer, fake Campbell's soup can etc. as its now become a common place to stash valuables. My friend was recently broken into and they tore apart the freezer and kitchen cupboards looking for valuables.
Also, no matter where you hide your money you cannot guarantee that it's going to be safe, someone may come across it by accident. I once hid some jewelry in an old box - only to have a relative (that I completely trust) throw it out by mistake!
I personally would get a safety deposit box at the bank that way you know its safe.

Wouldn't keep more than 10k in the house at any one time.

Also I would refrain from posting where you put your cash at online, anyone with half decent hacking skills with a simple search of your IP to locate you can find out where and when you access your computer, find out where you live, or follow you to where you live and know exactly where your cash is.

Tampons are good.... I'm a little weird and paranoid, so this idea might be above and beyond, but I've found that if you wrap it really well, you can put it at the bottom of the cat litter box. Trust me - NO ONE is going to go digging through the sandy candies in hopes of finding valuables. This is especially good if you don't have a cat. Keeping a little bowl that looks like a cat dish on the floor helps lend credibility. If you do have a cat - use a false bottom or something.

I once used the cat litter trick when I was travelling cross country in a big van with my cat, and a somewhat large amount of pot. We got pulled over in Mississippi by the highway K-9 patrol (I guess we looked like hippies, lol), and they never found anything. The dogs sniffed at the litter box a little, but what dog wouldn't? And the cops (or potential thieves) have no interest in digging around in there.

Also, you can find safes that don't look like safes. Beer cans, soup cans, etc. If you do that, keep it where it's supposed to be if it were actually that product (ie the fridge, back of the cupboard, etc.). Some people are hip to this, though, so it's not fail-proof.

DO NOT put it in the freezer or underwear drawer. Those are the first places a thief would look.

any place that you might keep cigarettes or alcohol is a no (this means the freezer and refrigerator).

of course, it is illegal to get a safety deposit box to store money in order to avoid paying taxes on it.

the biggest concern is someone you know (even distantly ie. the boyfriend of an acquaintance) knowing you keep money in the house. the likelihood of a random robbery is relatively low if you live in a safe area.

this is another reason being discreet about dancing (or waitressing or bartending or anything with a lot of cash involved) is a good idea.

You can buy really small safes... like the size of a tissue box or even smaller. Just write the combo in disguise as a phone number somewhere. I know what you mean about shopping on line... Im hopeless too. If you put the money in the bank, does it mean you have to pay tax on it?

If you earned it in the first place, you have to pay tax on it no matter where you decide to 'stash' it.

For a fact, people who work in 'cash' industries are far more likely targets for robberies / burglaries. This is particularly true if the 'cash' industry person is attempting to avoid reporting and paying taxes on their 'cash' income. After all, if an exotic dancer were to file a police report that $10,000 in 'cash' was stolen during a burglary, the cops will definitely ask questions regarding where the $10,000 came from in the first place !!! This has led to dilemmas for dancers who had been attempting to 'fly below the radar' on income reporting and tax payments deciding to 'eat' the $10,000 loss rather than reporting the burglary, never getting their stolen $10,000 back, but also getting a back tax bill on the money they just 'legally' admitted to the cops that they had earned !!!

In my own case, I actually have two safes. One is a fairly cheap WalMart special in which I keep semi-important documents but only a few hundred bucks in cash. This cheap safe is also not well hidden and just sits on the floor of my closet. As such, if I am ever robbed or burglarized, the perps will undoubtedly find this cheap safe after just a few minutes of looking, get a few hundred bucks for their trouble, and leave without looking further.

My second safe is much smaller, but of much higher quality, extremely well hidden, and solidly bolted in place. I keep serious cash and valuables in this second safe, along with very important documents.

thanks for all the replies! definitely good suggestions! If I were to put it into a safety deposit box at the bank, then I'd just rather put it into my account. And I do wanna pay taxes on it.
I just don't like stopping by the bank after work...
It's more of a measure for me to start saving. Nobody else has a key and I'll live in a high rise with electronic fobs and keys so only people that live on my floor can get outside my apartment and nobody can visit without telling the concierge where they're going. So it would be more for people that visit me, if anything. Call me paranoid, but you never know until after.
The tampon box trick is good, kinda like hiding it in books, etc. But I'm also scared that it'll go missing or I'll throw it out. I once thought I threw away my diamond nacklace cause I hid it in a place like that. And I'm scatter brained so that's dangerous lol..

I would suggest 2 hiding spots - one that's fairly obvious where you keep a little bit of money. And then the real, secure hiding place. Back before I had a local bank account, I kept all my money in my room in a house full of roommates who always had people of "questionable character" over (seriously, one of their bitches stole a new, full box of tampons from my bathroom cupboard, wtf?) And my roommates were not quiet or discreet about me being a stripper. What I did back then was keep the majority of my money in a shoe box which I hid under several blankets in one of the storage containers under my bed. Then I would keep just a little bit (like 40 bucks at most) in the top drawer of my desk. That way, if anybody was going to try to steal my stripper money, and looked in the most obvious place (my desk), they would think that's all I had on me and move on. Still could've lost a little bit, but I figured better for me to lose $40 of "decoy money" than the $2000+ I actually had hidden.

I would suggest a very large safe. They weigh 300lbs plus. There's no way someone can do a snatch and grab with something like that.

^^^ while that may be true from the standpoint of sheer weight, that will not stop any determined burglar from simply drilling out the lock. Even more so, any would-be robber who knows you are a dancer and who also assumes that your decision to spend > $1000 on a large heavy safe probably means that you keep lots of valuables in it, may not be above waiting for you to come home from the club in the wee hours and then forcing you to open the large heavy safe FOR them ( at gunpoint or using other forms of coercive force ).

In truth, a small high quality wall safe that is properly bolted in place will be just as difficult for a burglar to physically remove ... as well as much more difficult for a burglar to find in the first place ! Thinking like a burglar, every additional minute spent on the 'victim's' premisis increases the risk of being busted. They want to get in, score quickly, and get out. This is the rationale behind my having a large and fairly conspicuous but el-cheapo safe in my closet in which I keep a couple hundred 'throw-away' dollars to satisfy any burglar or ( armed ) robber ... 'sorry but I just stopped at the bank yesterday, $200 bucks is all that I earned today' . Meanwhile my smaller but higher quality wall safe containing the heavy cash and real valuables isn't even on the burglar's / robber's 'radar'.

Yes I agree with the other posters and also dont put your money in one place I have a few hiding spots (just dont forget them, ive done this before lol). I jsut dont trust putting all my money in the bank, I dont keep any more than 2-3 gs in there. Also as far as getting robbed, its usually by someone the person knows. Ive always been very funny and paranoid about having people in my personal space because one I dont trust many and two you never know waht type of energy someone brings into your home.

    ^ THIS.

Buy an actual safe, bigger the better.

    Take a look at this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Mesa-Safe-Comp...5118770&sr=1-6

Also you can add weight to it with lead diving weights, that's the cheapest way to make it even heavier.

    Good luck.
