I don't think it's the cards, but the reader... His/her experience in interpretation, etc. I've had some excellent readings by fortune readers who only used playing cards. I have a deck but I can't make heads nor tails of any of it good luck! I hope someone chimes in with some experience

I have one tarot deck. I got it as a birthday present years ago and I STILL don't know how to read it without using the book that came with it (The Davinci Tarot). I'm actually in the process of purchasing one of the classic Rider Waite decks and starting from there. I don't actually buy any of the readings I give myself because I'm pretty sure if you think hard enough, you can twist any card you want to to apply to what's currently happening in your life.

Back when I was trying to learn with the deck I have now, I ran across some tips that was supposed to make learning the cards easier, like dividing them by court, major arcana, and minor arcana and doing a daily three card spread like that. Or, drawing a single card for a daily reading like that is supposed to be a good method.

I was thinking about buying this deck as well. http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Tarot-Lea...5151664&sr=8-5 They say once you get a feel for the cards and the imagery associated with it, that it gets easy. I think that's why the Davinci tarot is tough for me. They're pretty much all Davinci's sketches and don't really relate well to the classic tarot images.

Anywho, I'm rambling now. Too much sugar, teheh.

I've been doing card readings for decades. In fact you could say that card readings are a 'family tradition'. The cards themselves do matter somewhat, in that the symbols they contain help form a 'mental image'.

My favorite deck - which seemingly provides me the best 'accuracy' - is ...

but the 'modern version' of the traditional 'family' deck I was taught to read with is ...

Ive been told to be careful of people doing your readings because they can lie and tell you something bad, and you believe it therefore attracting it to you. But Melonie I love the egyptian deck! I know you reccomend the celtic spread to start with but I like the imagery better with the egyptian deck do you think it would be hard to learn that one for a beginner?

^^^ once you have learned to form the 'images' in your mind, the choice of particular deck is a minor factor.

As far as divination goes, I've always greatly preferred using the runes. I have a wonderful Futhark cedar set with Yggdrasil burned onto them. I never really connected with Tarot, but I have a really intense connection with the runes.

I was also 'taught' to read Celtic runestones. I have a traditional set made from actual Scottish beach stones ... which works OK for me. I have tried using 'modern' rune sets made from glass and wood, but they don't seem to work anywhere near as well. Again with cards, runes, or any other 'divination tools', the personal connection between the reader and their 'tools' is of paramount importance. In my own case, the cards 'speak to me' much louder and clearer than the runestones.

    She told me it draws negative energy to you.. { tarot cards }
Yes there is a body of opinion that holds that tarot cards or any 'divination tool' can attract both positive and negative 'energies'. This has been fairly well publicized by Hollywood in regard to Ouija boards attracting negative energy, but also holds for tarot cards, runes, etc. Just to be on the safe side, when not in active use, I keep all of my 'divination tools' wrapped in black silk and I occasionally perform a 'cleansing ritual' on them ...

The Tarot Bible by Susan Bartlett
^^^ extremely good book on the subject ... particularly the last chapter !!!

What happends during reading anyway? and how accurate are they?

I went to one just for curiousity... She told me to think of 3 wishes and tell her one, she was on spot on reading my other 2, and told me something very similar to my boyfriends readings (different psychic w/ me) about our future.. Which still ponders my mind and is a bit shocking.

Sorry for the threadjack OP, I love learning about this stuff.

As it was explained to me, possessing and using any of these 'divination tools' essentially provides a 'doorway' for esoteric energies ... which can be positive or negative. This is basically what makes any of these 'divination tools' work in the first place !

However, just like the front door to your home, you can keep the esoteric 'doorway' locked via physical means ( the black silk covering in my own case ) as well as by installing an 'alarm system' ( cleansing / protection ritual ). People who possess and use 'divination tools' without taking such protective measures are essentially leaving the front door to their home wide open while they are gone ... which obviously encourages any negative elements with bad intentions to take advantage of the situation !

melonie, you are full of surprises!

yes, the issue is being unprotected, which is a newbie mistake. kind of like using a harmful incantation you found online without knowing what you're really doing.

it's important to shield yourself daily. it'll become habit and you'll be able to do it in no time at all, but it's essential if you're practicing any of this.

The best deck for a beginner is the Rider Waith Tarot deck because the pictures are fairly basic, I started with that and then got several other decks that appealed to me. My favorite deck is the Mystic Faerie Tarot Deck it is beautiful.

I have a long list of tarot readers on my paternal grandmothers side of the family. I do read tarot cards for friends and family but I do not read for myself. I have had readings done and they were on point.

Aeclectic.net is a good website for research. I will list the books I own as follows:

Learning the Tarot: A Book for Beginners by Joan Bunning

Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom:A Book of Tarot by Rachel Pollack (she is an amazing tarot reader, omg her reading gave me chills)

The Complete Guide to Tarot by Eden Grey

Rachel Pollack's Tarot Wisdom: Spiritual Teachings and Deeper Meanings

Power Tarot: More than 100 Spreads that Give Specific Answers to Your Most Important Question- Trish Macgregor

Im curious to know if the people saying all this stuff is bad, are religious? But yes ouija boards are known to be "bad" because your awakening spirits, I know a girl whose boyfriend killed himself becasue he went crazy after using it. However, I thought tarot was more dealign with the subconscious? I was always told to bless the deck or whatever you do for good energy and accurate results. Any other ways?

Rider Waite Tarot Deck . Celtic Spread Readings.
    I-ching
Leared Reiki and some light work.
My ex actually masted reiki and would use it with ease.

Family Tradition to be into metaphysics.

I was given my first deck at 15 as a right of passage so to speak. Was being paid for readings by 16. Don't dabble to much now. Sexual energy of what I do would be be off from giving accurate readings. So I tend to do my own from time to time.

I don't think everyone is "religious" per se, but I'm sure they're spiritual or have had paranormal things happen to them. If you don't believe in the paranormal/spirit world, I would suggest borrowing or buying an infrared camera and then, at night, call upon deceased people you know. I would also recommend recording audio at the same time. Ask them questions and try to get them to come to you. Then, play back the video feed and the audio feed, and I'm sure you'll see orbs (white circles) flying around on the video feed, and hear EVP (voices responding to you) on the audio feed. Just saying. Although, I do know that ghosts like me, so I'm not sure this will happen to everyone. But its worth a try.

I read Tarot cards. The best thing that's helped me is making my own books for the meaning of each card. I rented/bought books or looked up on the internet the basic meaning of each card and other things about the card that caught my eye. I then complied them into a book. My own book, handwritten. I also wrote in different spreads and whatever else I felt was important, making sure to leave room for more writing, just in case .

Once you know the meanings of the cards, the deck "type" is irrelevant.

....also marking a cloth where the cards should be (depending on spread) helps in the beginning, and some pretty simple stuff like make sure the cloth is clean, yours and your clients hands are freshly washed. You don't want dingy cards.

i had a spontaneous reading once from a mysterious hobo guy in santa cruz that was freakishly accurate and insightful. other than that have never had a reading done by someone who wasn't a total amateur.

i bought the salvador dali deck because i love the artwork but i don't really use it.

i'm very interested in learning more about the i-ching...for some reason the system resonates with me more.
