As some could guess by my posting habits, I like playing the villain. What are your favorite villains from a movie? No specific number, just the ones you like. Mine?
- Anton Chigurh - No Country for Old Men 2007 - Javier Bardem
- Frank - Once Upon a Time in the West 1968 - Henry Fonda
- The Wicked Witch of the West - The Wizard of Oz 1939 - Margaret Hamilton
- Freddy Krueger - A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984 - Robert Englund
- Nurse Ratched - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 1975 - Louise Fletcher
For a villain to be truely great, he or she needs to be powerful, ruthless, and brilliant. Anton Chigurh came on the screen as the epitome of this. Neither him nor Freddy Kruger would I want to be stuck in a room with. But at least if I can get out of the room, or wake up, I can escape Freddy. Chigurh will always get you, soon or later.
It can also be bad if they're likable, like Freddy. He's evil, but the laughter sickly draws you closer. Or if they're an absolute, unforgiving asshole, like Frank, you can't help but despise him, yet he's there. Or just a unmovable power of authority, like Ratchet - every punk's true enemy. Poor, poor McMurphy. Or if you secretly desire them, like the Wicked Witch of the West. Here was this powerful Hell-bent woman whose ruthless, destructive determination was ultimately seductive. At least, I was always troubled as a child by that bitch.
So there's mine. Which villains do you secretly love?
