Duh i've actually GAINED weight since i started dancing. -____-

even though my activity level is definitely higher, i've gained about 20 pounds. no bueno.

i figure there's a few contributing reasons. the club i work at is BYOB so there's a lot of beer around, when i first started i drank a lot of it but i'm quickly learning to say no. 3/4 of the house moms bring snacks but they're all junk food, and my new roommates keep a lot of unhealthy food around.

i could definitely afford some hipster high-class diet and a personal trainer to take all the guesswork out, but i feel like that's cheating. besides, i doubt it'll stay that way forever ~

does anyone have other tips for keeping in shape?

Alcohol REALLY hinders diet efforts! I will definitely say that! Cut back on the alcohol and start eating more "whole" foods and I think you will see a big improvement.

Ya I had the same problem. I would always workout and be healthy before work when I was sober but whenever I would drink at work I'd end up either eating shitty food at work or on my way home (which is even worse.. Eating fast food before bed is the worst thing you could do).

Something that might help would be bringing your own healthy snacks to work (almonds are good!) and cutting back on drinking.

yeah, i've heard that a lot. i rarely crave unhealthy food when i drink but i know beer's not a great option regardless, especially for girls.

i adore fresh food, and my friends claim they do too. but every time i fill up the fridge with good food, i'll come back in 2-3 days and no ones touched it. -____- i wanna toss the microwave in the dumpster... damn lazy asses.

but i can control my weight on my own. by cheating i mean buying a solution to a problem instead of taking the initiative and discipline to fix it myself.

in general i think there's 5 factors to overall weight- diet, activity level, age+gender, genetics, and current state of health. i don't need a trainer to tell me that..

where did i say i had no idea what to do about it? i'm just looking for tips other than what i already know.

Quitting drinking alone will make a huge difference. I never eat at work, but if you must, bring your own healthy snacks, don't eat crap.

The concepts are very simple, it's having the willpower to implement them.

Stop drinking at work. Or at the very least, something less fatty than beer. I switched to liquor instead. *thumbs up* No, but seriously..drinking does that to you, especially beer. It also makes you incredibly bloated, so you'll feel "fatter" than you actually are.

I agree; bring healthy snacks to ward off hunger. And warning about almonds, since someone brought them up...I used to eat nuts to help me GAIN weight. It's good, healthy fat, but fat nonetheless. Calorie free snacks such as celery produce negative calories, because you burn calories while you chew it. If need be, slab a little peanut butter on there. Again, kind of fatty, but nutritious and may encourage you to eat healthier, so the benefits kind of outweigh the costs. Eating during intense exercise, i.e dancing, is bad anyway. Try to eat a couple of hours before you come to work and avoid snacking altogether.

Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. This encourages proper digestion and helps give your metabolism a boost. Which brings me to my next point....

Do not eat ANYTHING right before you go to bed, especially not a large meal. You do not digest while you sleep, therefore everything you've eaten is sitting in there, with no purpose other than to put some extra weight on you. Eat your last meal no less than 3 hours before you sleep.

Do you do pole tricks? If not, start doing them. Pole tricks will strengthen in your muscles and rapidly burn fat and the best part is, each trick targets a certain point of your body and you can therefore customize your workout routine. If so, do not pick up any other intense workout routine outside of the pole. If you're working 3 or 4 days a week and doing pole work during each shift, that IS your workout. How do you feel when you go home? If you're sore and aching....good! That means what you're doing is working. No? Well, it's time to learn some more advanced stuff and/or build up your stamina. You are getting very little exercise by just touching your boobs and rolling around on stage.....get on the pole and work out girl! PS, I actually do a cardio routine and run outside of work, but I'm an exercise nut and I feel like crap otherwise. But don't underestimate how hard the pole works your body.

Have realistic expectations. Bear in mind that as a woman, you are supposed to have a higher body fat percentage and it's unhealthy to lose that at a certain point. If you're craving rock hard abs and killer biceps like professional athletes, remember that they have to face the threat of health problems to go along with that....the two biggest examples being osteoporosis and infertility. Do some research and really put some thought into what a healthy weight loss would be for you, if you haven't already.

hmm... it's very strange that you gained that much. How many days do you work? Even when I eat bad and drink every night at work, I still don't gain weight.
SInce you're in skimpy outfits all the time it usually keeps you motivated and you notice changes quickly.. Are you sure it's just the eating and drinking or could it be that something else caused the weight gain, like medication? (just taking a wild guess cause it seems unusual)
It's really hard to give you advice cause it sounds like you're not very self-aware (I'm really not trying to be mean or put you down but I can't find a better way to say it)
Try doing workout DVDs at home and eat really clean until you're at the weight you were at before, and measure yourself with a tape so you can monitor changes in your body the best.

thanks for the advice negative calories don't exist though, and it's important what types of fat for balance.

my expectations aren't outlandish, i just want to be at a good weight for my frame. i'm naturally quite thin and i'm not at my normal size. i dont get much opportunity practice on the pole, the one at my club doesnt touch the ceiling so its a bit unsteady. i've just been working on core balancing til i get a chance to work on some techniques. i can't even climb it

i'm almost positive its my eating habits, because its the only thing thats changed. i'm not on any meds so thats not a factor.

you're right though, i need to be in better tune with my body.

Are you kidding? There are LOTS of negative calorie foods. It's as simple as burning more calories by chewing than the food contains. Google it.

what helps me the most is eating smaller portions. It's hard to start getting into, but once you've made it a habit, your stomach shrinks and you won't even be able to eat a lot. The easiest way to trim calories.

Yeah I was about to say there definitely are such things as negative cslories, it just means you burn more calories with chewing than the food contains itself. I only was saying almonds are a good snack over negative calorie food like celery because it fills you up faster (that could just be my own opinion though). I think if I brought celery to work I'd stay hungry than if I brought almonds.

Oh and I really want to learn pole tricks so that could be part of my workout but I'm always afraid to practice at work and look like an idiot! I tried some pole classes but they were so expensive and I didn't even end up doing anything I learned from it at work.

Sounds like you already know more than the average person!

Do the paleo diet or primal blueprint diet. I'll sum it up for you.... basically you eat how a caveman would have eaten. No processed foods, no dairy (although some still eat, I don't) lots of vegetables, moderate to small amounts of fruit, tons of MIXED protein. Basically eat only vegetables, fruit, and meat, with some nuts thrown in. Eat all the chicken skin, organ meats, egg yolks, etc. that you want. Try to stay cognizant that you are eating a protein, fat, and carb source (carb source could be a starchy vegetable like a sweet potato - NO GRAINS, BREAD, FLOUR)

But seriously, if you've gained 20 lbs in a small amount of time, you might want to get some blood work done.... could be a thyroid or hormonal problem.

Unless you were extremely thin to begin with, 20 lbs is a LOT. Stop eating sugar, eat more protein and read this:
