Angry if you make $700K you are poor

    People are so delusional.... http://www.urbanbaby.com/talk/posts/53801088

I stumbled upon a lovely little article today that ridiculed some greedy-greedy people on a parenting forum. The title is:

What's your household income and do you FEEL poor, middle class, upper middle class or rich where you live.

    Some choice responses include:

    $700,000 poor. NYC

$350K, so, so, so poor. Not being dramatic or anything, really poor. We totally struggle every day. UES.

    $500,000. I feel poor

180K Greenwich Village. I feel wealthy compared to most of the world. I feel like I am doing my child a disservice when she cried at age 4 because I told her we will NEVER buy a country house.

Honestly... I think some people will never feel they have 'enough'. It doesn't matter if they make 30k or 30 million... they'd always be "too poor" in their minds.

Lol that person is a tool. I'm way over extended for my income but I still don't think I'm poor. Some people need a reality check. If you don't like your lifestyle change it!

Wow. Talk about your first world problems. I ran across a thread similar to that one awhile back where a bunch of women married to attorneys were discussing income. :/ Rather nice to see someone who made 90K in addition to her husband's 200K make it sound like they were just BARELY getting by. No children. If you can't make it on 25K a MONTH (my mother used to make this in a YEAR, raising 3 children), something is wrong. I don't care where you live.

Those are the moms that feel like you "shouldn't have children you can't afford" if you can't afford to never work, have your kids wear only name brand clothes, go to exclusive private schools, eat only organic baby food, blah blah blah. Obviously single welfare moms shouldn't have 7 kids, but uuuugh those types annoy me.

They annoy me too. Do you know someone told me I shouldn't consider having a baby unless me and my husband were making over $100,000? I mean really. I can't stand those types who are so materialistic. Seriously, kids don't need designer clothes (they will outgrew them fast anyway)or the fanciest pre schools or the brand new car on the 16th birthday.

I think it varies on the area. I think they meant $100,000 a piece. Here you can live decently on that but depends on the area here. The closer you live to Chicago the more it costs, especially in the nicer areas. Personally, I don't think I would have kids unless we were making a combined 100,000 but they meant 200,000 I believe. I knew someone raising a family on $50,000 and that I don't think is enough. It's not poor but still in the struggling area when one has kids.

If I'm not working our income is $45,000 a year. We manage to get by, but I'm not gonna lie it's HARD. No extra spending cash and minimum in savings. I don't understand how people survive on an enlisteds salary and have more than 1 kid. I see some families for 3+ kids and mom doesn't work and they're not making much more than my husband. How the hell do they do it?!

So much easier when I work.

i think i'd want a higher income if i were to have a family not because of private schools and designer clothes, but so i could save up just in case. i think saving up is really important when starting a family.

Average median income in most areas is what 45,000 per 3 person household and people raise kids fine on that. They were saying on the world news 1in 3 americans lives in poverty so these assholes bitching about 200,000 are idiots. My mother didn't work when I was growing up just odd obs for extra now and again during holidays and my dad made around 80,000 I think whic was good in the 80's. we owned are own home and my sister and I were pretty spoiled around the holidays and stuff. I didn't get a car bought for me, I bought the one my parents were getting rid of(my first car). I was taught to work for things when I was a teenager and til this day it gave me a great work ethic, bought my first home at 21.

It's called greed and lack of perspective. It's one thing to want more and work towards it, and a whole other to not appreciate what you have.

Ugh disgusting. Dpending where you live and the cost of living, some places are more expensive than others. But complaining that 100k, 200k is living poorly is disgusting. Those wives need to stop bitching about getting jewerly each week and a new car each month. All they need to do in manage money better. People live off ~70k of 2 parents and children and somehow those people seem to do it.

My entire life (until I began dancing) my household income was less than $20,000. I wonder what people on that forum would say about me.

Many of my friends growing up were a little better off since they had two parents (I'm from a single parent household). That being said, $60-$70K was considered rich in my neighborhood.

    Go figure.

Yuck, a guy friend of mine was raised rich and he's almost unbearable b/c he literally can't imagine what being poor is like. I'm sure he'd die if forced to survive on $20 K a year.

It's all relative. Some people survived the Great Depression by living in shacks and wearing rags, others jumped out of tall building windows rather than end up living in shacks and wearing rags. Mind over matter.

Be glad in the US most people have a chance to seek prosperity. In some foreign cultures, it's not even allowed or imaginable for certain classes of people.

I agree. Where I currently live, you would struggle with combined income of $100-$200k with kids. You could do it but I live very close to the inner city. My house (we rent) is only 2 bedroom and would sell for over $1million dollars... A similar house in small town north America would be less than $150k. But it could be done if you grocery shopped in far away suburbs where food is cheaper, only sent kids to public school, did not have a car or bought a used car for less than $5k, did not enroll your kids in any activities that cost additional money, shopped at salvation army, etc. Your gonna wanna hope neither of you has unpaid student loans and you'll certainly never have a holiday unless it was a train ride and camping in another town. I guess I would feel shitty about that because $100-200k should be a lot but in some places does go far.

But that being said the above lifestyle is not "poor" to me. Poor is not having food, clothing or shelter. There was times when I was a kid my parents ran out of money and we couldn't buy bread or milk till pay day, but I never felt poor... We lived in a nice house, had a car, I had clothes from walmart. But now that the kids have all grown up my parents have way more disposable income. I doubt they ever get down to the last dollar before pay day.

In SF, the Bay Area as a whole, NY, and many parts of LA that income is not livable though. Its more about the cost of housing though than it is about anything else. And they are referring to affluent parts of NY, so it makes sense what they are saying.

^ The average median income in ny is 53,000. So I guess most people are living way above their means. An example that guy who killed himself on the real housewives of beverly hills. His wife was having 40,000 birthday parties for their daughter when in reality after his death they said he hadn't paid his mortgage in 3 years and was deep in debt and was only bringing in about 100,000 a year but living like he was making millions like all those idiots on those shows.

^ ya it's just the debt that fucks people up and makes them think they are poor. Here (Australia) the average household debt is over 150% of income. Its the highest ratio in the world. So someone making $50k probably owes $75k. I can understand why people are under pressure but I still think with my first post... When it comes to debt a lot of it is choice. If you don't like being stressed, don't over extend and scale back your lifestyle. You won't feel poor then. This is why my hubby and I decided to live with housemates the last 2 years.

^ My dad always said if you can't pay cash you can't afford it. He payed cash for everything( except our houses or he didn't buy it and he never wanted for anything). Everyone today want's to keep up with the joneses. My tennants are a prime example, they never pay rent on time( still owe for part of nov and dec) but their kids have computers, like 5 game systems, they have nice furniture, flat screen tvs a new mercedes and I can't really tell but looks like a reall louise vuitton bag. They look like they have money to some but can't pay for any of those things!

It's ironic how low income ppl can have and see no problem having a kid or two, raising them without an issue.

Yet, those who live lavish lifestyles are the ones who bitch that children are expensive.

I refrained from responding to this topic at first because it seemed a little too personal, but screw it.

My sister and her husband have this same attitude. They are both corporate lawyers and if I had to venture to guess, probably have a household income in the 500k range with two young children. It's beyond laughable to me when they complain about money; oh we need this new Lexus for work appearance, a huge SUV for hauling the kids around, four seasons of designer clothes, a house filled with new furnishings that is professionally decorated, eat out all the time. I understand that they both incurred a large amount of debt getting through school and worked extremely hard to get where they are, and deserve to basque in some success, but the sister I once knew is now entirely incapable of enjoying anything simple in life. I don't think they've figured it out yet that nobody wants to visit them because it's preferable to take a trip and return with your hair still attached.

I think it's very difficult for people to separate from a particular lifestyle once they've become accustomed to it, and even more so if it's the one they've envisioned as the perfect life.

True, but don't try to move to Beverly Hills or Manhattan on 150k/year in that case, right?
