My parents made about the same combined when I was growing up (until I was 16; then dad got a job paying $200k/yr) and we had pretty much anything we wanted. My dad is a real softie. If it was on the Xmas list, we got it. I've been to almost every major theme park in the USA and Canada, every major zoo, every major aquarium. We took two vacations a year. My parents both had nice cars. We went to public school, mainly because my sister and I said we didn't want to wear uniforms and my dad didn't want us getting a religious education. I wasn't allowed to work in high school and got money whenever I asked for it. It all depends on the area and perspective.

That being said; if in an alternate universe my husband and I decided we wanted children, we have always said we would save money for a year before even trying to get knocked up. We are very comfortable for US, but I wouldn't be comfortable raising a child without a combined income of $80-$100k.

I have always had a hard time making friends with people who hail from that kind of income bracket. I'm not sure why. It could have something to do with me somehow living off 300$ a week between me and my (now ex) boyfriend for a year and a half.... Or when I had to live through the part of the recession where people with higher education took all the fast food jobs. Oh man, that was the worst. Fuckin' south. That's one of the reasons why I moved.

There is a version of dancer that is like this too. You know- the one that always seems to have 5x new outfits every time you see her, a brand new pallet of MAC make-up, but is always "poor" and "never makes any money". I have one that's a really good friend and I just sigh when she complains about "being broke" right after showing me a brand new set of designer dresses.

Well in some cases it would make sense to. What if both parents get their dream job there, and they want to live right next to where they work to avoid traffic? Idk, I feel like its their choice. Everywhere has their pros and cons.

My sister and her husband have this same attitude. They are both corporate lawyers and if I had to venture to guess, probably have a household income in the 500k range with two young children. It's beyond laughable to me when they complain about money; oh we need this new Lexus for work appearance, a huge SUV for hauling the kids around, four seasons of designer clothes, a house filled with new furnishings that is professionally decorated, eat out all the time. I understand that they both incurred a large amount of debt getting through school and worked extremely hard to get where they are, and deserve to basque in some success, but the sister I once knew is now entirely incapable of enjoying anything simple in life. I don't think they've figured it out yet that nobody wants to visit them because it's preferable to take a trip and return with your hair still attached.

I think it's very difficult for people to separate from a particular lifestyle once they've become accustomed to it, and even more so if it's the one they've envisioned as the perfect life.
I remember someone, I think it was Suze Orman, talking about how some careers actually end up costing a fuckton of money because you are supposed to uphold a certain image in order to gain the highest-paying clientele. Law would be one of them. All those expensive suits, a car to match, etc. Anything in fashion would be another. Modeling is another (clothes and travel). Being a stripper would potentially be expensive depending or not if you get your hair and nails done, tan or not, and wear the same outfits or buy new ones. Compare these careers to say... a teacher or a computer scientist or an engineer, and the cost difference is substantially because one has to uphold and image and the other does not.

wow. my mom raised me and my sister on a $27000/year paralegal salary. my sister is raising two kids on a $15000/year income. both of them live in areas with an average cost of living - they just make/made below the poverty line. poverty blows but we turned out okay and $50k+/year is absolutely not poor. that's ridiculous.

not being able to pay your rent on a modest apartment or mortgage is poor. having to choose between utilities and food is poor.

not being able to buy a second house because you racked up $50k in credit card debt (but you can at least afford the mortgage on the first house and the rest of your essential bills) is just fucking irresponsible.

A professional appearance is needed of course, but the allure of affluence doesn't have to dominate all aspects of your life.
