Default Most guys seem to think that strippers get a "salary"

So I was perusing a couple of other forums recently where the subject of stripping came up, and I noticed that in both cases, the guys on these sites (which are not stripping-related in any way) seemed to think that strippers either get paid by the hour or receive a salary or some sort from the club. It was actually pretty interesting, and may explain why so many guys go to the club without spending money.

One of the sites on which I found such commentary was an S&M site that I frequent every now and then. I think the topic of strippers came up because some of the guys were trying to figure out if they could pay strippers to indulge their fetishes or whatever. The conclusion they reached was that a lot of strippers would cater to fetishes because they were "on the clock" while at work, and thus they were being paid by the club to make the men happy.

Another site was a site for young lawyers, which is largely populated by young male lawyers, who tend to be know-it-all assholes who are clueless about women. One of them was going on and on about how some stripper was chatting him up in the club and wouldn't leave his side. Another member was like, "Dude, she gets to bill for all that time she spent with you, so the joke's on you."

So yeah, it looks like most guys who don't go to strip clubs that often don't really know how the whole system works, and just assume that the girls are getting a boffo salary, health benefits, vacation time, and a nice 401k from the club

This has always been a problem. I couldn't begin to mention all the men who would come in and request me to sit with them then when I mentioned tipping they would say "but you are paid to visit customers". I had to tell them that no we weren't.

To be fair, there was a time when clubs actually did pay strippers to work. Some still do though it's pretty much always either minimum wage or, more commonly, a "server" or "tipped employee" wage-less than $3 an hour...

In the pre lap dance era clubs paid shift pay and dancers got to keep their stage tips. They had to tip the DJ but that was about it. In the post LD era clubs charge dancers for their schedule and, even the ones who have put dancers on the books to be compliant with the laws in some states still find a way get a daily fee out of them on top of all of the other tip-outs.

I only bring all of this up because I think that it's where some of the misinformation comes from regarding the dancer's work arrangement with the club. Also, remember that feature dancers get payed to perform as well, with tips on top of that of course.

I remember being shocked back about 12 or 13 years ago the first time I had a conversation with a dancer and she mentioned a house fee. I learned quickly though...

Regardless of my little history lesson, there will always be guys who prefer to remain clueless...and cheap. This is one of the reasons that dancers in the LD era have to develop sales skills and BS radar in addition to stage moves...

I got this all the time when I was dancing. Guys would always ask how much we got paid to be in the club and were always shocked when I explained that we had to pay to work there, then had to tip the DJ, floor guys, etc . . .

To be fair when I started a few clubs were paying me to dance there. These were strictly hustle bars, meaning you had a drink with them and most didn't offer dances.

Yeah, I was talking to a guy like this once. I stayed with him awhile, and he kept making comments about how he knew I was just talking to him cuz I was getting paid... finally, confused, I asked him how he thought I was paid. He honestly thought that the manager was sitting up in the DJ booth, clocking all the time that every girl spent with a customer, and we got paid for it.... because it's such a common assumption, I almost want to feel like they aren't stupid, but come on.... Thinking we get an hourly wage or a salary is one thing, but getting paid per minutes with customers....? How on earth could a manger watch and time every single girl's interactions with customers? Do they really think every SC has tons of staff on-hand to do that sort of work? Or that a manager would take the time to review 12+ hours of video footage every day to pay god knows how many girls for every moment they spend talking to a customer... Or that they'll just take our word for it!? HA! I mean, seriously now, it pays to think once in awhile.

Yeah, that's how the clubs in Boston's old "Combat Zone" worked. YOu sat with the guy, got him to buy you very expensive watered-down drinks and got a commission on every drink you sold.

I bought a lot of cheap champagne cocktails back in the 80's....

I've seen a couple clubs that paid the dancer, but it was minimum wage waitress salary, which is what, like $4.85 an hour or something? Which means you should be tipping ANYWAYS.

Everywhere I have ever been the DJ constantly and loudly announces “THE LADIES WORK FOR TIPS AND TIPS ALONE”. Evidently someone is not paying attention.

Some places also have signs explaining the same thing.

What many people do not know is the entertainers pay to perform. It seems they ought to be thought of more like commercial tenants in a shopping center.

Hey, one still even runs into people who supposedly just learned of the subminimum wage level for waitstaff at restaurants and bars to begin with! I suppose I could imagine some people being unclear on the concept of tipouts/housefees, but still, folks can be really oblivious.

Yep. This is the truth. Customers have no clue that we pay to work. Nor are they aware that we have to tip the staff, pay a percentage of our dances/room fees, etc.

But before I started dancing, I never heard of someone paying to work either. I guess I can't be too mad.

I just wish customers were better educated.

I had friends who were strippers long before I entered the industry myself, so I was aware of the system going into it. I remember being shocked at the idea of actually having to pay to work somewhere, as I was a waitress (in a normal restaurant) at the time and was bitching about my $2/hr wage. If I went into the club unaware of the system and was told on my first day of work I'd have to pay to work there, I might not have stayed.

If the management is going to set up the system in this way, I think they should be responsible for letting the customers know the deal. My DJ is good about announcing it, but I'm sure a lot of guys just tune out the DJ's voice at a club. If house fees and tip outs are mandatory, educating the customer (even just a sign or two) should be mandatory as well.

well i work in toronto and i get paid to be in the club for a 7 hour shift and doing 4 shows a night. in toronto, you have the schedule girls and you have the free lance. i myself love to be on schedule because if i'm not on schedule, i dont go to work at all.

schedule girls get paid $50 a night and free lance girls pay a fee to work. so even though you dont make money at work, schedule girls still get paid. they dont go home with nothing and owing the club

^^^ Sigh. Just another reason to feed my Canada-envy. I've heard such great things about both Vancouver and Toronto. If it didn't get so damn cold up there, I think I'd enjoy living there for a while. Oh, well.

We get paid to work here too. By my understanding, parts of Germany, Greece, and Italy also pay their dancers to work...Hawaii also... So I can see where the general confusion on the customers part comes from. Every single club is different, which is probably somewhat frustrating.

Always get guys that think we get paid. It gets frustrating after awhile because it definitely is not the norm...!

How would customers know any different. Unless you're a long time club goer. Have been in or around the industry...or even know someone whos been in or around the industry.

Hence why when a customer is not tipping I politely tell him "Did you know we are working for tips? The only money we make comes from you. So if you plan on not tipping please leave your seat for someone who is" Even if he thinks Im a bitch and doesn't tip at least for future reference he knows now.

I had a guy say it to me once I asked him where hes from and what club where did he learn that from. He looked so confused to I explain to him that if he knows a club that pays their dancers I would love to go there cause we only work for tips here.

I wish we did get a salary. Would that be nice? At my club my manager and his crew sometimes get dances. Some guys were shocked when I told them even the mangers have to pay for dances. Some guys are so naive.
