Default Racism is alive in Georgia schools... among teachers

    Wow... just wow:

Third graders in in Gwinnett County, Ga., were given math homework Wednesday that asked questions about slavery and beatings.

Christopher Braxton told ABC News affiliate WSB-TV in Atlanta that he couldn't believe the assignment his 8-year-old son brought home from of Beaver Ridge Elementary school in Norcross.

"It kind of blew me away," Braxton said. "Do you see what I see? Do you really see what I see? He's not answering this question."

The question read, "Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Another math problem read, "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Another question asked how many baskets of cotton Frederick filled.

The article said that the teacher was trying to incorporate the social studies lesson in the math problems.

    Nice job, dumbass.

I kiiinda get where the teacher was (ignorantly) coming from- the role of slave labor and the ways in which policies imposed during slavery and Jim Crow have endured in the present era SHOULD be discussed. The problem lies in raising issues of slavery, systemic and institutionalized racism and violence completely absent of context. What sort of dialogue is this teacher expecting to inspire in a math class? Mentioning something is not discussion. This reminds me of my grade 8 teacher, who put To Kill A Mockingbird on our class reading list, without it occuring to her that maybe it would be a neat idea to include some materials that dealt with these issues from perspective of those most negatively impacted by them. I highly value cross-disciplinary education, hell I thrive on it, but context is all. This teacher would benefit from reading some works that deal with spatialized racism, and how discussion intended to broaden perspective can actually entrench existing norms and perspectives. He/she should also google Jane Elliott

This is horrendous. Kind of reminds me of a comment I saw years ago asking to calculate how many people died at Auschwitz. While it's important to discuss history it should be in hstory and not math questions.

That is so messed up but racism unfortunately is still very widespread. Dont know if this made the news in America but this is the sort of ignorant racist behaviour we have in the UK. At least someone stood up to the woman in the second one.

I spent years stationed at Pensacola and Jacksonville, saw lots of blatant racism there... it went all directions but some of the worst was against caucasians

^^^Yeah I agree with Jax, that isn't really Fl. in my opinion, I partied there a few times growing up & left thinking (where the fuck am I). I was born in Tampa & that is a lot different than the good old boy thought still here in Ga. The one thing I will say about the Atl...there are a lot of Affluent people here of ALL colors.
