    Default retirement/next career plans

One of my new year's resolutions is to make a solid plan for a "retirement career," something that doesn't require a 4-year degree upfront that I could do at least until I'm middle-aged. Right now I still just have an eighth-grade education, and the only well-paying jobs I'm qualified for are dancing and bartending. I have enough practical experience doing hair and makeup that I think a semester or two at "beauty college" plus a few well-placed references should be enough to land a job doing hair and/or makeup for movies (I live in New Orleans, where lots of movies are shot). I'm also seriously considering an apprenticeship to be an electrician or a carpenter.

    What are y'all's retirement/second/third/etc career plans? I really don't want to be a manager at a Bourbon St. club when I'm forty-five . . .

Beauty school would probably be perfect for you if you enjoy hair and makeup. I did it for a few months, then had to leave because life got in the way, but while I was there I freakin loved it... and most of my friends went on to graduate and find well-paying jobs. : ) It's the kind of career you can do for a looong time, and you can always dance or bartend on the side.

My retirement/career plan is to go to vet school and one day have my own practice. Kind of a pipe dream right now as I'm still dancing and just starting the pre-recs. But I'm trying to transition out of dancing this month, and I'm applying for animal-related jobs to get some more experience.

It took a little less than a year for me to pass my personal trainer certification. I would like to own a studio offering different aerobic and dance classes and also offer one on one for the most serious of clients when my dancing days are over. I would love to teach pole too!

I'm making plans to go to school fro esthetics. General cosmetology wasn't worth the tuition to me since I'm not keen on doing hair. Makeup and skin care however hold my interest!

I'm planning on going back to college this year to get my beauty therapy qualifications. One day I plan on opening my own salon.

Apparently the highest paying job that doesn't involve any tertiary education at all (just on the job training) is air traffic controller
here are the other hightest paying ones, they are all very 'guy' kinda jobs, not very girly but that makes sense. Women have always earned less: http://www.mlresearch.org/blog/job-s...ithout-degrees

I blab on about it all the time, but Im studying to become a vet. I just finished 2nd year. I plan on working as a small animal vet when I graduate. Specialising 5 years later (you must be practicing 5 years before completing a specialisation) Not totally sure in what yet but oncology and cardiology interest me or you can even just become a dog specialist (they have that here). I hope to own my own practice by the time Im 40 and maybe even have a few under my belt eventually. I won't ever have to "retire" from vet work I can just stop practicing and gain passive income from my ownership. Im not saving for a house, Im saving for a practice Houses cost more here anyway! LOL Ill definitely stay dancing until at least 1 year after I graduate and may even moonlight from time to time. I think its a good motivator to stay healthy and in shape and I don't mind being an older dancer cause I plan on staying hot and sexy for a long long time.

    Nice !!!

However, even though my 'trust fund' was self-generated, I agree with you that the the best goal for 'serious professional dancers' is to save enough money while they are dancing to allow them to avoid ever having to 'work' again once they retire from dancing.

I am increasingly concerned that with high unemployment being the 'new normal', and with technology from IRS information sharing to facial recognition technology to gov't databases on the rise, that future straight job employers are increasingly likely to deny 'good' job opportunities to any and all prospective employees whose background checks turn up a history of work in the 'adult' industry ( which includes strip clubs, webcams etc. ). This brings into question the economic wisdom of dancers and camgirls investing tens of thousands of dollars into college degrees, and also investing tens of thousands of additional dollars in 'lost opportunity costs' ( i.e. not earning maximum money by dancing or camming because they are devoting time to studying instead ), versus the 'payoff' they are likely to actually receive once they graduate.

I have a degree I dont use, but Im happy being a mum
Planning on going back to stripping after Ive popped the next bub, because we want another investment property, and dont want a mortgage. owning our own place, and having rental income from two properties is enough to be comfortable.
So Ill just focus on family (stepford wife I know)

I had my first degree finished before I became a dancer. I gained two more than I paid with by dancing. I've been working part -time as a dancer off and on for years. I've worked in the fashion and film/television industry in front and behind the cameras. My husband and I paid off all our debts last year. We've been lucky enough too live off the films he has produced in the last year and a half. We have already built up a decent retirement and keep working towards it.

I started dancing to pay for college. The initial retirement plan was to graduate and take a day job. After a full year of dancing, it became obvious that I could make enough money to have a nice investment portfolio for when I did graduate/retire. That would be important, I thought to hold me over while I studied for the CPA exam and hunted for a job.

Fortunately, when I graduated, I got a very attractive fellowship that worked me enough to study and pay my bills. So, the investment portfolio needed a good deal or re-working. After all, I had invested as if I needed income rather than growth. So, I spent six months after the CPA completely re-tooling my portfolio based on a more reasonable retirement age of 65 rather than 22. And of course, the prospect of funding more than six months of inactivity when I could certainly have continued dancing.

Fast forward a nine years, and I've completely redone my career twice since I retired from dancing. Now, I've invested almost everything I own, other than my house which is almost paid off, in my business. If this works, I'll have the business to hand over to my daughter. My intention is to create a hereditary situation where I raise my child and pass on the now family business to her and she passes it on to her children. If I have learned anything in 4 years of dancing and 9 years in the corporate world, there is no greater safety net than a good family business.
