    Angry Discrimination in 2012 REALLY?!?!?

I am Caribbean (ebony) I have had success escorting independently but recently decided that I wanted to try a agency out so I can tour and maximize my calls/money and have somebody else do all the work for a change lol. To my surprise looking at the job listings 80% of the agencies postings does not want black girls, their ad blatantly states " NO BLACKS" I was shocked. I am Wondering why is this...I know I have made dam good money escorting being "black". I feel as if anyone can make money in the industry regardless of race or how big or small you are because everybody has a different taste not all men like "cookie cutter" girls. Maybe I am looking at it the wrong way...there are a lot of beautiful black girls out there with great money making potential. I would just like you all opinion on this issue and to know have any of you all ever experienced anything like this before....

Unfortunately this is part of the industry. I've never been an escort but was a stripper and yes I have been asked on the phone if I was white. Even clubs have not hired a hot black girl while they hired a fat ugly blonde. I never understood the logic but racism is out there and it's wrong.

If it's racism then I agree, it has no place but it could be that the demand for black girls may not be there. I'm black as well so I've seen some of the ads you speak of. I've actually never had a problem getting hired by a major agency (never actually went through with it), but if a lot of customers prefer caucasian girls or other races I can somewhat understand. They do monitor who is the highest in demand (page views, call requests, etc). So if they find that 95% of their clients prefer non-black women, then from a business standpoint, it really doesn't make sense to hire black girls. Or maybe they're not hiring black girls at the moment because they have enough to meet the demand. I know once when I looked at clubs, I went to a predominately white club by accident. I thought the club was more urban. But when I saw the owner, he practically begged me to take the job because they had no black girls at all and they try to keep at least 3 black girls on staff because customers do request them. Now they wouldn't hire 20 black girls but they would definitely hire a few.

I agree black girls can make damn good money escorting but I find black girls usually do better independently as opposed to going through an agency. On the flip-side, I've seen a lot of black providers who won't see black clients as well.

^yea Ive seen many provider's ads that say "NO BLACK MEN"

People are stupid - money is money. Agencies are even dumber, a number of the girls in TER's top providers are women of color, a few black, but almost all are indie (like genuinely indie, no middlemen). Some agencies are in the dark ages.

What part of the country are you from? I dance in Baltimore/New Orleans/Philly and the worst I've seen in three years is in Baltimore the Scores only is allowed to have a certain percentage of black. And I thought that was bad

They may have had bad experiences with ghetto drama, pimps, etc. Do you have professional photos? Ignore their rule and submit some. If asked say you are Jamaican, Latin, etc. Your avatar is tiny, but you look hot. Work it! Good luck!

I ran into this problem when I was getting started. Only the lower end agencies were willing to hire me; I was not working for 80-100/hour! Eventually a couple of middle and higher end agents hired me. Unfortunately, the work didn't fit in with my schedule so I went indy. You really just have to keep looking until someone calls you back. Don't be afraid to work for a few agencies at once!

One of my white friends always tries to introduce me to her clients, but as soon as they hear I have an ounce of black blood (I'm half creole and italian) in me they say no. She shows them my photo, they say "she's pretty but she's probably ghetto/upsells/has AIDS." It can be hurtful because they never met me and are already judging me.

Years in the adult biz have taught me that the clients aren't rejecting the packaging; many clients find black women attractive. They reject the angry/rude/AIDS infected/ghetto black woman stereotype. Unfortunately they only have a photo or description to go on.

My advice to any black woman (not just the OP) in this industry is to be as polished as possible. Make it easy for the agencies to market you. Get professional photos of yourself in a dress and in fancy lingerie (NO stripper gear).

BE ON TIME FOR ASSIGNMENTS- dependability is #1 in this business and will trump many detriments. They may send you on assignments usually given to a brunette or latina if no one else is available.

If you use weaves/wigs they need to be the best you can find or none at all. If you get manicures don't get neon colors, glitter etc. Don't dye your hair unnatural colors. If you are "thick" sorry, but you will need to lose some weight; most agencies want girls no larger than a size 6.
When you meet a client, SMILE and be accommodating (many clients avoid black ladies thinking they will be rude and complain about everything). If you're prone to sounding "ghetto" when you speak - take an elocution class.
Work clothes should comprise of tasteful attire i.e. skirt suit for daytime assignments, nice dress for nighttime- not too short or flashy. Classic accessories: stud or tiny drop earrings etc- nothing too loud. I once did a job with a girl who showed up in a baseball cap, door knocker earrings, jeans and timberland boots; no, the client didn't request that.

If you're not willing to do any of these things, you will have a hard time getting hired by agencies.

Black women have to work twice as hard in this business. Don't give them any reason to pass you over.
It's not about what you do for a living, it's about who you want to be.

All of you ladies have valid points. Thanks for sharing! I will take all the advice offered here and if it still fails I guess I will just have to remain indie and keep getting money on my own besides I only have a few months of school left...I will have to stick it out.

I think this is a good point and more often the case then not.

Yep it does, including dancing , in all my dancing years and I lived in GA where they still have something called the train tracks that supposedly divide black and whites (yet i always worked at the best clubs predominantly white), Ive never really experienced it until I came to New England, and traveled to FL to dance. The lady that hired me in FL at one of the best clubs told me youre a safe black girl WTF is that? Therefore, she hired me...Then in MA I went to the top club mind you IVE NEVER in my freaking life been rejected and this lady would not hire me to save my life come to find out she doesnt like black people and if she does hire them they have to be ligther complexion. So its not until now (im 2 that I realize how alive racism is or maybes it where I live, very racist up here in NE. It pushed me away from dancing a bit but then I agree with Tabitha, I realized whenyoure black you ahve to be on it! It sucks but you have assimilate to make it in this industry, so I stay in shape slim toned, where my ahir straight ( i love to wear it curly /wavy but straight is safer) make sure you dont fit the stereotype, and make sure soemthing stands out about you. Also the weave should be on point as she mentioned! I wear clips ins so everyone thinks my hair is real which is something different bc everyone expects us to be baldheaded lol WTH. Try brands like bohyme or hair factory they have hair that can blend with your natural hair. Never feel inferior though honey they love us!

Another "Ebony" checking in to validate that you as a woman of color ARE in fact, in demand. Long story short, I tried an agency and was treated like SHIT! It was a reputable agency so at least I had the opportunity to shoot with a very nice reputable photographer for free (SCORE). Nonetheless, the agency owner offended me one time to many. He had misconceived preconceptions about me as a provider due to the color of my skin, and me being the feisty Leo I am (rawr) had to gently put him in his place.

I went indy, practically starved for a couple of weeks, and lo and behold I can attest to the fact that we are in demand. One way I managed to set myself from the pack and introduce myself to the industry as the awesome person I am was via blogging. My blog allows these guys to witness my exceptional diction, grammar, and personality. Guys have emailed me practically begging to see me because of the entire package they are privy to. Granted, this advice applies to every woman, but I find it very very useful for women of color to blog. Let these guys hear your "voice", upload a video (no face needed just shots with a sexy voice over) upload beautiful awe inspiring shots of African memorabilia, really play to your strengths, in which case is your differences.

I find men love the fact that I am the "hot black chick next door". Don't dilute what makes you unique. I don't pander to individuals by lying about my ethnicity. I don't proclaim to be mixed *shudders*. I. AM.ME. And THAT my dear is what will have these guys banging down your doors :-)

If you want to take a peek at my blog and website feel free to pm me :-) I work hard to put forth an image of a normal, naughty, hot black woman. Don't complicate things. You will find that you will attract guys that are going to ADORE you. Look at it this way, you don't want the guy who is crossing his fingers that you appear mixed......and you damn sure don't want to misrepresent yourself. Just focus on what makes you awesome. It's soooooo many men out here that are into you. Don't fall into the mindset that you are inferior. My bank account, and calendar, damn sure insists otherwise.

    Remember, have fun!!!

See, this is why I've stayed off of here for a while. Bringing all the drama into...nothing. I just caught up on the posts and layka gave some great advice, I dont see the reason to say anything against her. OP, i'm sorry that happened to you, it DOES suck, but like everyone has said before, you can do it

^^Sunshine "I can't stand you" is a phrase of endearment usually used when someone says something funny. It's irony. No drama intended, I'm sure.

OP It could be racism, it could be based on economic principles. It's most likely a combination of the two. Either way, I like when people are upfront about it because it saves you from wasting your time. I know it sucks but yeah, as a black woman you will have to work way harder in most industries.
Bitch? Actually I'm an evil cunt. Slut? Try dirty little whore. Either way, you have to pay for it.

Why even say it? Everyone doesn't know that. I for one didn't. Just another way of fishing for drama IMHO. Smh.

No drama here, just slang. It's the same as joking around and saying "get out of here." You're not literally asking someone to get up and leave. LOL

On topic. It's really sad that discrimination exists in this business. There are plenty of gentlemen who like variety. People need to stop assuming that every African-American woman is rough around the edges. Believe it or not I was actually turned away from a couple escort booking jobs (phone work) because I'm African-American. I speak the Queen's English and because of my California upbringing I sound like a straight up valley girl. The interviewer thought I was Caucasian during the phone interview, but when they met me in person I was denied the job because they were uncomfortable with blacks answering the phone.

For the record Camille is a IRL friend hahahaha she didn't mean any harm. She has a sarcastic sense of humor Lmao Girl, your tone is always dry online lmao

Hey ya'll...let's make that $$$$$ Ignore the naysayers. Women of color command serious money. Again, you can make serious money with the correct efforts in place. Got dayum agency depressed the hell out of me when they started talking that non sense about low demand. I'm willing to bet that might be true in the case of certain agencies. But when you go the independent route the difference is night and day. You know, this would also apply to BBW. I'm sure they hear their share of agency NO's. But I know for a fact a good friend of mine who is a BBW makes GREAT money. You have to keep in mind that agency's aren't in the business to help one establish themself. Nor are they remotely interested in helping you create a brand or image. So with that said, women of color should consider going indy in order to get a fair idea of demand. You will be greatly amused by your results in comparison.

Ironically enough, Camille was the first person I called with my woe is me story when I left the agency in question. Hahahahahaha I was pitiful. I remember saying...."are you serious, how the hell can you NOT sell pussy...how depressing is it to not be able to sell PUSSY for crying out loud" In but so many words, she told me to get my shit together. I thought exactly the same thing. As being from the same geographic area (but being completely pale) I had noticed that Black people from the Caribbean are way classier than some of the Black people from the continental US. Also, being from the Caribbean (regardless of skin color/race) always seems like something very exotic. Those two things could work in your favor BIG TIME!

Of course, I'm not talking about ALL Black people.

Also, Tabithacooks is very right; people tend to reject the stereotype rather than the actual person.

This is why its better to be independent, agencies usually discriminate against blacks, mature women and over weight women. I have had agencies hire me and then after working for a while tell me I am not getting calls becuase I am black or in the phone call tell me they can't hire me becuase they already have a black girl or tell me I am difficult to market.

well umm being independent majority of my clients are caucasian or asian I rarely see black clients.

we've had this same discussion in dance sections about race quotas and i've insisted over and over again that the myth of lower demand is perpetuated by the people in mgmt positions rather than the people spending money. of course, very few people will be successful in any environment where they are constantly being told that they are unwanted, in low demand, unable of commanding ____ amounts of money...the ego will always work to prove itself true. so being surrounded by this sentiment will create it. distancing yourself, or going independent, will rid you of this rubbish so that you can create your own success statistics.

Discrimination? Unfortunately, yes. Towards men ^^^ as well as the women, apparently. Everyone has an excuse that they use in order to justify their stereotyping/prejudices. The good news: other people's ignorance doesn't change the truth about who you are. It just exposes the character defects in the racist people.
