I read the title of this thread with a sarcastic tone (I guess that shows you how my mind works), and so I steeled myself for yet another round of "bash the sex workers in an online article comments section". I was pleasantly surprised to see some articulate and logical feedback in support of dancers and other strip club employees.
Some good ones:
"...Anna van Heeswijk and others of the sisterhood seek to protect and represent a body of women - dancers - who resent their interference. The vast majority of the girls enjoy their work, not least exploiting men, and have a wider range of social skills and are better behaved than many women in their twenties...They have sufficient street-awareness to look after themselves. Compare them to so many silly teenage girls on weekend nights in town and city centres - scantily dressed, drunk, raucous in their behaviour and embarrassing to behold. If van Heeswijk and co want to improve morals let them preach to very young women who really are vulnerable. Most strip clubs cause fewer problems than many pubs and conventional nightspots."
"...Finally just want to make sure people are clear that at the moment the dancers, bar staff and bouncers are protected by the law, what happens when it goes underground?Everyone including those people that Object claim they are protecting get hurt."
"I can't see the problem with strip clubs- it's aiming at a certain market that will always be there- what is the harm of them? This will be the only supposed free country in the world that doesn't allow strip clubs, yet we've got thugs and murderers and illegal immigrants wandering freely up & down our streets-what a country!"
"WHY??? Those clubs with strippers performing have signs and notices warning and advertising the fact, if you don't want to see a stripper then don't enter the club!!! This is no longer a free country we are being corralled, bullied and pushed around by a few faceless suits, this PC nonsense must stop!!!"
"I didn't discover curves; I only uncovered them"
- Mae West
the number one comment actually made me laugh for ages:
When i saw the 'Crackdown on sleaze' headline, I thought it was referring to the councillors.

another favourite was:
When I first saw the picture of the pole dancer I thought the article was about the current crop of pop singers performing today!
- caren, where ever I lay my hat, 30
just because im a brit too and we have such a wierd sense of humour.
ps i can only see one lady protesters face, she has a pram with her so maybe she does think she's doing whats best morally(im not arguing about this just trying to see her side of things), i think the pictures were taken outside dublin's stringfellows, where the locals had more of a problem with peter stringfellow (for some reason they don't like him)than the actual lapdancing.

The signs make me giggle "protect our women and children" are these women going to house, feed and look after the strippers they are putting out of work? Thought not! Its not like strippers are walking around naked and flashing these women and children who are definitely walking round at 10pm at night when the club is open and busy haha. These would be the women first in line to "protect their rights" should a law come out to make women be covered from head to toe. Glad to see a lot of comments with positive aspects.
''I love fake boobs''
''They're not fake! I grew them myself!''

"This would never happen with Berlusconi in charge." haha
