    Default Anyone here take valium?

Long story short, I was prescribed valium last week(generic if that makes any difference) for anxiety. I used to take ativan(didnt do much at all for me).
Xanax is truly the only thing that works when im about to have a panic attack(which luckily does not happen often) however I have never been lucky enough to get a doc to prescribe me xanax. Its always been klonopin, or ativan. Klons worked ok, but ativan is just junk IMO. Anyway I am not prone to depression, but i have had crying fits, mood swings, (im not pregnant btw..)and it all started one week ago. I slept for like a day straight (i never do that)
Just wondered if anyone here experienced depression while on valium? I just thought it was odd cause none of the other benzos caused me depression and they are stronger, altho i know valium stays in your system longer.

I just found that xanax didnt give me a hangover effect like the valium. And also no depression from the xanax. I dont know if valium is even really supposd to cause depression. Im just trying to figure out where this sudden onset of depression came from. I know the lethargy has to be from the valium as it stays in your body longer.

Valium makes me want to kill myself. I like Xanax. I probably like it too much. I've been off the benzos since June and I have never felt better. I'm not being judgmental- I'm just telling you my experience. (And no-I never abused them. I only took them as prescribed.)

I managed to get an Rx for Xanax when I was 19. Dr's are reluctant to give out Xanax (especially to a 19 year old living on a college campus!) so it all depends on how you ask. Don't ever walk in and say "I want Xanax" because they could interpret it as drug seeking behavior; say that you've been having problems and were researching other drugs in the same class and wonder if it's an option.

The way I got the Rx was by telling my Dr that I desperately needed something that would work better than Ativan but wouldn't last as long as Klonipin. Then I mentioned that I'd done some research and heard that Xanax is effective but has a short half life. Klonipin actually doesn't last any longer than Xanax for me, but it's supposed to so I played that up. Obviously you'll need to say that the Valium isn't working either. Your Dr will probably interpret it as a good sign if you say that Klonpin lasts too long though; even though you're asking for something stronger it won't seem like you want to be fucked up all day.

I always wondered why people said docs hand out Xanax like candy, I have never experienced that. My current doc will prescribe it, but isn't happy about it. I'm still trying to overcome the anxiety with a higher effexor dose and meditation, but it isn't cutting it. I think I will try klonopin instead, or just go ahead with the xanax?

Oh sweet Xanax; I had a doctor that would give it to me like candy...and it lasted for like two months (each 30 pills dose).

I take Buspirone for anxiety. It's non-benzo (I react badly to benzos), so it may not be as strong as you would like. I don't know how much taking a Buspar in the middle of a panic attack would help, but if you take it consistently it helps with anxiety problems. It may help with panic attacks - I just don't know because I haven't had one yet while on this medication *knocks on wood*. I guess it's more of a preventative, but it may help with panic attack symptoms as well. I haven't been taking it long, but so far I haven't had any side effects and I do feel like it is helping.

I don't understand why they would be reluctant to prescribe Xanax, but they're fine with giving you Valium. Valium has street value as well.

In any case, if they're dead-set against giving you the medication that you KNOW will work for you, and nothing else has done the trick for you yet, it might be worthwhile to research/ ask your doctor about Buspar.

ETA: Whoops, I should have read through the thread better before responding. I'm glad they gave you your Xanax! I don't know why doctors won't just listen to us in the first place. We usually know our bodies and what works best for us better than anyone, but it seems like any time I ask for a medication by name they want to give me something different instead.

Benzos aren't for depression and can cause rebound anxiety and depression, you just never know how you'll react. Doctors don't like to give xanax because the half life d get itis the shortest of all benzos and has the highest rate of abuse. I've been on benzos for 4 years for anxiety and sleep issues and take them more when I travel and like 3 times a week when I don't and when I just recently went from taking like 5 .05 of kolonopin a week to 5 a day and had severe panic and counln't get out of bed my first 5 days of my trip. It was weird because I was putting a higher dose in my body so if i'm getting anxiety before a trip and start taking them frequently it usually builds up in my blood and i feel better not this time. Being on them 4 years I still don't know how I'm going to react to them. if you don't have anxiety and are just going through mild depression i would suggest paxil as it helps with depression and anxiety if you only get anxiety occasionally.

They also suppress REM sleep, which is a very bad for anxiety if it occurs for an extended period.

Interestingly enough, if you randomly assign chronic anxiety patients who have never taken benzodiazepines before to receive either Buspar or a benzo (while being blinded to which one they are getting), both groups report about equal anxiety reduction after four weeks. If you perform the same experiment with patients who have taken benzos, many of them will report that Buspar "doesn't" work because it doesn't give the same sort of instant anxiety reduction you get with a benzo (Buspar can take as long as 2-3 weeks to start having a significant effect). These results suggest that, despite what some patients may claim, Buspar is about as effective ("strong", if you like) for controlling chronic anxiety as benzodiazepines. It's also important to get the dose right. The starting dose of Buspar is 15 mg/day, and some docs just start people on that and leave it there. But the dose can be titrated as high as 60 mg/day, and many patients who don't respond well to a lower dose get significant benefit from a higher one.

    It doesn't help.

Buspar hasn't been shown to be terribly useful for preventing panic attacks, although some people believe that it does help them. Many patients with panic disorder also have some degree of generalized anxiety disorder, and Buspar may reduce the overall worry and anxiety over the possibility of a panic attack occurring. Also, long-term use of certain SSRIs has been shown to be highly effective at preventing panic attacks.

Benzodiazepines are the only type of medication that is effective after a panic attack has already started, and in my opinion, occasional treatment of breakthrough panic attacks is the only acceptable long-term use of benzos for anxiety disorders. They're a terrible choice for regular, long-term use with generalized anxiety disorder. The backbone of panic disorder treatment should be an SSRI and possibly Buspar, with benzodiazepines used only rarely for attacks that can't be prevented.

Unfortunately, what patients want isn't always what's best for them, particularly when it comes to medication.

^ I agree with all of that. I don't like to be on antidepressants all the time as I was on them for 7 years and as a dancer weight gain and having zero emotions and thoughts of suicide daily aren't something I want to deal with at this point in my life and I know I'm not supposed to do this but I will take a half a paxil every other day when my anxiety gets too much as I don'tlike to have to rely on benzos and will not take them in the day time.

You should try another antidepressant. SSRIs work best for anxiety if you take them consistently, but there's no reason why you should have to put up with those sorts of side effects. If I were you, I would find a psychiatrist and keep complaining until he or she prescribes you one that ends up working well for you without a lot of side effects.

^ That's what my mm says of you want to be skinny but depressed and screaming and yelling all the time. i go to a psych but it's basically a place you go to just get your meds he doesn't really listen to a word I say ( I always joke I could tell him to go fuck himself as he's asking me manual questions while jotting down notes while never glancing at me) and he would never notice but I was on several for 7 years, prozac cellxa, paxil, effexor metal issues run in my family and i'm the highest functioning bi polar, ocd, depressed, anxious person so most psychs don't think I even have a problem. Anyways I don't want to threadjack anymore but antidepressants are just something I don't want to take all the time.

i take valium, i used to take klono and ativan and these only temporarily relieved anxiety and gave me rebound anxiety due to their short life span. valium being a longer span anxyiolitic works better for me and has helped my anxiety alot and also i'm not prone to abusing it because i don't feel a high like you do from ativan or xanax

^ Kolonopin has the second highest half life of the benzos. xanax the least ativan second and valium the longest. Valium made me feel high not as high as say xanax but its what plastic surgeons give you a shot of before surgery. shows you how benzos effect everyone differently.

Make sure you tell him about the suicidal thoughts you have when taking Paxil (or any other antidepressant). That will get him to pay attention, unless he is eager to get sued.
