Default Websites--Video Clip Sales versus Membership

For those of you who have their own website, I am curious to see how many of you have gone with the video clip sales format (as in Clips4Sale, etc.), as opposed to the membership plan, as most adult websites currently use.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each format, from both owners' and customers' viewpoints.

Obviously the membership plan is cheaper for the customer, if he can get all the content in the entire site for 20-40$ a month. But if he doesn't cancel, that's 20-40$ a month every month, which can add up pretty quickly. Obviously the people who run the billing companies taking a percentage of the profits every month--who I am suspecting have far more influence on the popular accepted format than most people realize (more on that later)--WANT the customers to forget to cancel, or find the process too difficult.

The clips sales format is better if the customer wants to pick and choose which types of video or whatever, but obviously adds up a lot more quickly--but no chance of forgetting about it and 6 months later you realize you spent 180$ for jackshit...

I do a mix of both...it all depends on what other features you'll be including in the pay area as well, and how important videos are to diff segments of your target audience. Plan your strategy based on what the existing customer base considers most valuable/important and proceed from there

It's a brand new website, so I am still finding that out. But I think offering both is the right idea.

Memberships and sales are dying, people are getting comfortable with the internet and realize the availability of information without paying. Exclusive content is king, but only until it gets leaked which is only a matter of time.

    my 2 cents

From customer point of view, buying clips is an expensive gamble. The only way to really know if the quality is any good is to buy a clip, and you discover too late that you wasted your money on a shoddy video. Which makes me extremely reluctant to buy any clips from anyone; been burned too many times. A membership site is a safer bet; if there is a big variety of many clips, chances are good that there will be a reasonable amount of keeper clips worth collecting. But it is impossible to be able to accurately pick those keeper clips (and only those keeper clips) from a clips site. If I were a seller, my strategy would be to have a membership site, and update it frequently enough that customers will have to maintain their membership (or re-subscribe later) in order to keep up with collecting the new material.
