You might be able to get quotes on line. AFAIK everything is geared towards shopping for insurance online. I would explain everything as far as family members being covered. You might be making it more complicated than it is.

I think health insurance will come out to more than $150 a month. It looks like you can stay on Tricare for about $4,000 a year ($1065 per quarter) if you are a divorced spouse.

Here's one site that says it guarantees their rates are the lowest you can find:

You can buy dental insurance separately from health insurance. Hope this helps.

    ^ I pay about $35-40 a month for dental. It's not bad.

Indeed for 'full coverage' health insurance, the $350 per month rate available from TriCare is VERY cost competitive. Absent 'low income' subsidies, the cost of 'full coverage' health insurance for an individual, even a young and healthy individual, can easily run twice that amount ! After all, the health insurance companies effectively rely in 'overcharging' young and healthy policy holders in order to pay for the expensive medical care being consumed by older and less healthy policy holders.

If you're on an extremely restricted budget, given that you are a combat vet, there is also the option of foregoing the $4,000 a year cost of 'full coverage' health insurance entirely, paying 'out of pocket' for expected medical and dental care ( which should be well under $4,000 ), and relying on 'free' treatment at a VA hospital as a 'backstop' against the potential medical costs of an unexpected major injury or illness. This approach doesn't work well for someone in their 40's or beyond, but it does work for someone in their 20's. Of course, the coming mandates under US National Health Insurance may throw this option under the proverbial bus once a new 'tax' is leveed on Americans who ( voluntarily or otherwise ) don't purchase 'full coverage' health insurance.

^ I get everything except for dental from the VA and I'm well past 40. I pay for perscriptions but everything else is covered. The rules could be different depending on when you were in but I'm not sure about that. The OP should look into what the VA has to offer but it's normal for vets to gravitate away from the VA and other things that may remind them of the military once they are out. Not sure why you would think it doesn't work as well for older vets. I thought it was the opposite.
OP, I would look into this. I've had insurance through jobs and had out of pocket private coverage. I'd investigate all options (VA, out of pocket, etc..).

    P.S.
This is a very complicated issue and it seems younger vets such as the OP simply aren't aware of their rights.

simply based on rising health care needs that must be paid for 'out of pocket' versus available for 'free' through a VA health care facility.
