Default Cool shit to do down in the keys??

So I'm leaving for the keys a week from Monday (Yay! ) and I wanted to know what would be some cool places to see, eat at, drink at, etc... We are staying on Marathon Island but plan on taking the Shuttle down to Key West on one of the days/nights. Any suggestions??

Wish I could help you out here, but after all this time of being in Miami, I only just went to Key West for the first time a couple months ago, and we spent all our time in the pool and jacuzzi

But I went to Key Largo when I first moved here, and we rode on the catamaran, and went snorkeling.. Most of the activities around there have to do with the water...snorkeling, boating, sailing tours, jetskiing, etc. Oh, and drinking...lots of places to go drinking. Its not the most high class luxury place to be I have to say, its incredibly casual and down to earth around there. So as far as posh places to go drinking/dancing/eating, there really arent any and if you find something like that, let me know! lol

Key West is a very fun place!
Be sure to hang out on Duval Street, lots of bars there and some decent restaurants. It offers some of the best people-watching outside of Vegas (there are some really crazy fuckers in KW). It can be a crowded, touristy area but that's to be expected, KW is small. Main tourist places include Margaritaville and Sloppy Joe's. They aren't bad but there are some really good out-of-the-way bars/restaurants to be found with just a little bit of looking. Captain Tony's is fun too. Lots of live music all over the place. You can get some cheap souvenirs along Duval, like t-shirts & stuff.

Be sure to watch the sunset from Mallory Square... it's a great local tradition and lots of people gather around to watch every night with drinks in-hand. There's an arts festival on the dock just before sunset (nightly, I think).

If you're a fan of his work, Ernest Hemingway's house is a museum in KW.

Be sure to take your picture in front of the buoy at the "Southernmost Point of the US." It's located at the bottom of Whitehead Street. Another good pic is at the "Mile Marker 0" sign. It's at the intersection of Whitehead and Fleming.

The old lighthouse on Whitehead is a museum that's open to the public. Some fascinating history there.

    Have a great time, K!

Unfortunately, there's not really a lot in Marathon that's great as far as bars or place to eat. The better stuff is in Key Largo, or really, Key West.

The keys are all about the water...diving, snorkeling, boating, jet skiing...that kinda stuff. You can do all of that in the mid-keys, but the upper and lower keys are actually better for all of that. If it's not too late, I'd change my plans and go to KW.

I used to always stay in Islamorada when I went and do a couple of day trips to Key West but it's been forever since I've been, I want to go back sooo bad!!!

Drive up to Islamorada and go to Theatre of the Sea, it's beautiful! I swam with dolphins there one year and it was the most amazing thing I"ve ver done!!! Also, and I beleive it's a bit north of Theatre of the Sea but there's a little restaurant right by at a little marina (I want to say it's Bob's marina but can't remember) called The Hungry Tarpon, really good breakfast. Always ate there and then afterwards we'd go to the marina and buy a bucket of fish to feed the tarpon. I wish I could remember more but it's been about sic years since I've been down there.

Key west is very touristy but the last couple weeks have been dead. Paddle boating is a ton of fun and $29 full day rental at hurricane hole. The lazy gecko, steel horse, Irish Kevin's, Pete's piano bar are great places. I enjoy the tree bar by Durty harrys. The sunset dinner on a catamaran is decent priced and really nice.

We're going down for our honeymoon and are staying in these cool little cottages on the beach in Marathon. On one of the days we are gonna head to Key West for the day/night. We enjoy the laid-back, sitting on the beach, or kayaking thing.

    Lol
Umm our cottage is costing about $1300 for 4 days. Our plane tickets were only $75 a piece. And we'll probably bring about $1000 for spending money. Doubt we'll spend that much though.

^ How the hell did you get such cheap plane tickets? I'm only 7 hour drive and live in florida and I usually fly into work and drive back with my friend who has family by me and a one way ticket is around 2-300. I've lown seacoast for around 260 rt but that was the cheapest. Have fun I only go for work I don't really go out down there but if you like spanish food el subinay has the best grouper the flavor is phenomenal not sure if I spelled it correctly but if you like seafood or chicken they have great food and I'm not really into cuban type places.

I got buddy/stand-by tickets. I know someone who works for Southwest and she gets like 30 free tickets a year. She could get in trouble for just handing them out to people so she likes to make a little bit of profit off of them. $150 for 2 roundtrip tickets was completely cool with me

My parents' friends used to have a place there, so my family and I went to Key West for Spring Break one year.

Part of our trip included Hemingway's house.

I remember at one point on the tour, they showed us the pool. The story goes that his wife at the time was overseeing the pool's construction and it ended up costing $20,000.00. When he heard that, he took a penny out of his pocket, and said, "Well, you might as well take my last cent."

(A variation of this story was that he physically stuck the penny in the wet cement.)

The house is also home to many polydactyl (six-toed) cats.

Key West is known for its key lime pie!

(When I was there, I made it a point of tasting the restaurant's key lime pie for dessert. For the most part, it was on every menu of every restaurant we went to for dinner, so I wanted to taste the different ones.)

Speaking of restaurants, I remember liking the Half Shell Raw Bar.

We happened to be there during the annual Drag Race. That was interesting, especially for two high school kids (and two parents, actually) who have never seen someone in drag before: "What a beautiful woman . . . .waaait a minute . . . ."

Two of my favorite clubs are The Bottle Cap and Bare Assets. Both are extremely comfortable and have great couches (the Bottle Cap are free--Bare Assets being a stripclub they cost 25$ an hour weekdays, 50$ an hour weekends). The Bottle Cap gets too crowded during Russian Night though (tuesday). They are not on Duval which can be a good thing. You should hit Duval for the people watching, though. Island Dogs is a kind of Tiki Bar but is hit or miss as to when it's kicking or not. You might want to check out Garden of Eden the clothing optional bar, on the third floor of The Bull and Whistle, it has no roof which is cool. A lot of the people getting naked should put their clothes back on, but that's part of the fun, sort of.

I'll try to think of some more clubs and things, I am sleepy right now sorry.

It does get crazy down here--and not always in a good way. People get so fucking stupid drunk, and they are on vacation--bad combination. Plus a lot of the locals are kinda crazy. Watch out at the Gecko, there have been a lot of fights there and there are a zillion gangbanger types. Rick's upstairs is a little better, but it's a top 40 type dance club.
