    Default Ignorance is bliss

I was wondering if the rest of you gals are fully informed on various issues like gun control, global warming, gay marriage, affirmative action, health care, free markets vs. social safety nets, the existence of God, which moral code is the right one vs. common sense etc. I have a degree from Duke but I'm a complete moron. I read a lot but I don't remember anything that I read. Facts slip out of my head. I like the idea of being an epicurean/slut and just having fun and acting like life is a party. Then I won't feel stressed out and I won't find offensive information about the world like sexism or something. On the other hand, if I'm not informed, I won't know who to vote for. But how will I know who to vote for if I don't remember any of the policies? And how will I know where to begin: conservative or liberal? What do you think I should do?

I think it's important for people to at least be aware of the issues that they care and want to talk about. Nothing annoys me more than people who have very strong opinions on something like gay marriage, abortion, etc etc, but openly admit that they don't actually know anything about the history, policies, arguments, or even anything that's going on with the debates/laws currently. I know not everyone on the planet (myself included) is always going to be super knowledgeable about every political topic, but if you're going to open your mouth about it, I feel you should know something. That doesn't mean you have to know everything about everything. Not everyone can be a super-politically aware activist, and if it's not your thing, you shouldn't try to force yourself. I'm like you - I forget shit the second I stop reading it... my grandma keeps insisting I be a history teacher... I keep telling her I can't remember facts to save my life... lol If it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

Although, that being said, I try to read the online paper every day - not the whole thing, I just get the email that has the links to the headlines and important stories in each section and I'll read what looks important/interesting. When I first started doing it, I realized I actually enjoyed how aware I was about the world around me. I don't know the entire history behind every political action happening around me, but it is nice to at least not have that "not a clue" look on my face if somebody mentions something important going on in the news, like I used to. You don't have to become some sort of political activist to at least be aware of the important shit going in the here and now. You don't even have to try to "catch up" on world history before you start becoming aware. If you just take 15 minutes every morning to read the main headlines in your favorite paper, you'll catch on quickly enough. I have nothing against ignoring most of the tedious bad shit in the world and enjoying life without all that political nonsense, but it does pay to be at least marginally aware so you're not that person going "Huh? What?" when something really important is going down and all of a sudden you're forced to catch up.
Don't try to win over the haters. You are not the Jerk Whisperer.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

I like to be informed on issues and like to look at both sides like pro-choice versus pro-life or gun control versus gun rights and everything in between. Keep in mind that your opinions will change due to experience, age, etc. As for conservative versus liberal I hate those labels because not everyone fits in either one, not to mention being a social liberal or conservative is vastly different than being fiscal. Social views are about believing one thing and in many cases outlawing or restricting something versus fiscally, which has to deal with paying for those choices or lack of choices.

Read, read, read! There's a ton of info out there from so many sources that all you can do is dive in. See what makes sense to you and what doesn't. Which sources make sense and are consistent and which aren't. There's just so much to consider.

You talk a lot about choosing to be a slut and dumb yourself down and "acting like life is a party." Maybe if you want to be better informed, you should stop doing that...having a healthy sex life is one thing, but CHOOSING to be an idiot doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe you should stop doing that. I have a feeling that would solve a lot of the problems you talk about.

And, once again, you seem to think that in order to have a healthy sex life you have to consciously act like a moron. This is not the case at all. You have a Bachelor's from Duke University? Really? And you're asking how you should be better informed about current events because you get too stressed out thinking about it and you're a "complete moron"?

Perhaps there is some type of brain damager or condition affecting your short-term memory? You don't have to remember everything you read but if you made it through college and got a degree, I assume you had to memorize a lot of things.

Read the paper (yahoo news is my fave) and find some blogs and forums and topics of interest, stuff will sink in.

OR...take notes. That's what Dale Carnegie preached, and I think Thomas Edison was big on it. I have major ADD so if I need something to stick, I look, listen, and TAKE notes, which gives me 2 ways to capture the memory, and an extra way to hold onto it through the writing.

Being an "epicurian" isn't realistic, unless you're independently wealthy I guess. Eventually everything comes crashing down and you will have to deal with the consequences. However, I don't do much more than peruse the news a few times a week these days and it makes me happy NOT to stress out too much about things. There is a fine balance.
