    Default Apartment or townhouse?

I've only ever lived in houses, but I don't want to rent one by myself (my ex and I lived together last time and his dad was the owner, so he took care of repairs and maintenance). I have my heart set on a townhouse, but 2 of the ones that are close to my family are a little expensive and they have high occupancy, so I might have a hard time getting one in a few months. I can't decide if I should just get an apartment that is close to my family (if the townhouse in the are doesn't work out) or if I should move an extra 25 miles away to get a townhouse.

I moved into an apartment when I moved out initially (I was within 15 minutes of family), and then I moved into another apartment 6 months later that was an hour from my family but near the strip club I worked at. I despised living near the club with my son and I moved back by my family a year later. I live in a condo, which is similar to a townhouse but a condo is more luxurious in my area.

Anyhow, I really love my condo. It's the perfect size (1600 sq feet with an attached garage) for my needs. I love living by my family because they are nearby when I need help or want to see them, but I'd rather live farther from in my condo them than live in an apartment again. Apartment buildings my area always attract disgusting people (i.e. drug addicts, low lives, trashy people) which therefore means noise, crime, shady people roaming about, and oh--did I mention lots of noise?!

If you can find an upscale apartment complex near your family then I'd move there if you are close with family, but otherwise go with the townhouse. There is one upscale apartment complex near my condo (I almost moved there) with 24/7 gated security, attached garages, they are huge, have strict requirements about income and credit, etc. It may be a hassle to jump through the hoops with places who require proof of income (or a lot of cash upfront) and good credit (or a lot of cash upfront) but it's worth it to me because drug dealers, low lives, and section 8 recipients don't live in those areas and they are the trouble makers near me.
If you are willing to do for one year what other's won't, you can spend a lifetime doing what other's cant.

If I was to pick I would go with a town home or condo like Laurisa said over a apartment. You usually can find a better deal as well as some owners will negotiate unlike Corp. owned apartments & requirements are easier. If you know a agent in the area they can pull all rentals & find something that fits your needs & see how long its been on the market.

I've done apartments, and I'm never doing them again. I much prefer townhouses or condos--the main thing for me is a lot of apartments don't have individual exterior entrances for each unit, and I am really, really bothered about having to go into a common interior area in order to enter my home. I don't know, I just don't like it. Plus, in an apartment, you have someone on either side of you, someone above you and/or someone below you, and the walls are paper thin. In a condo or townhouse, you usually have your own two-story unit, so you don't have to worry about the above-below neighbor problem--and quite often (though not always) there's some kind of soundproofing if you happen to share a wall with someone. You're more likely to have your own driveway or even a garage with a condo or townhouse, whereas that's very rare with apartments.

Yeah, I say definitely go for a condo or townhouse. It's much easier to make it an actual home.
