    Default Facebook selling our info?

Just found an interesting story on Yahoo today about facebook selling our info. I've been going back and forth about not having a personal facebook, I don't have a camming FB thank goodness. Just thought i'd pass the info on for anyone else who might be interested.

As they said on Metafilter, "If you're not paying for it, you're the product"

I'm not at all surprised by this. Nothing on the internet is truly private.

Not surprised. This is why I am usually very careful by what I posted. For example a few years ago I listed my relationship status as single and was bombarded by other supposedly single men and dating sites. Now I list myself in a relationship and these have stopped.

Of course facebook is selling our info, why do you think its worth so much?
"Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: 'A horrible person.' We weren't even testing for that."

LOL, you read the article about Facebook on Yahoo. Yahoo does the exact same thing.

Even with Zuckerberg controlling a majority share, after FB becomes a public company there will be more pressure to develop an actual revenue model. I really don't think it's entirely coincidental that google rolled out a unified ToS for all their services, which includes looser language on how your private information is used after a few quarters of disappointing growth. It's a game of monetizing information while presenting the end user with the least annoyance and apparent privacy concern.

Well the best ways to get around it is to stop hitting "like" and to remove all games or apps downloaded. They share your information every time you do this. I'm noticing a trend of people just closing their accounts.

Also when signing up for facebook they wouldn't allow anyone to create a fun screen name. I always wondered why it had to be your real name. It all makes sense.

Bwahahahahaha! Muahahahahahahahahahaha! They're eeeeeeevil! EVIL I tells ya!

83% of Facebooks revenue comes from advertising.... the oh-so specific super-targeted ads that garner epic results and more bang for the advertisers buck.

Did you also know that Gmail scans every word you type and receive? Those fun little ads that appear on the right hand side of your emails... that's all determined by what you send, what you're sent, what you read, etc.... Yep, they're all personalized... based on your online activities (unless you opt out).

Google+ encrypts user data automatically and limits how much info third-party-people (advertisers, corporations) can get. However, if the third party pays for the info, your actions on a site accessed through google are laid out in gruesome detail, including what you searched, what you clicked, how long you spent on a page, what you bought, what you didn't buy, and so on.... FYI, 96% of Googles revenue comes from advertisers.

Wanna know some spookier shit? You're probably being tracked right now. The spookiest thing is that it may not be for the purposes of sending you cute little advertisements... It could be for:

...third parties or service providers collecting, using or transferring any Multi-Site Data in order to determine an individual’s eligibility for employment, credit, health care treatment or insurance.

There are guidelines that have been proposed in order to prevent such actions ^^^ But aside from saying they will be implemented some time in 2012.... all your info; Facebook and otherwise... is still up for grabs.
