Mind Blowing Payoneer - got jacked at gas station with $75 "pre-authorize transaction"

Eff you Shell gas station. I did't pre-authorize that! I got racked with a $75 pre-authorization bill on gas. Leaving my account $75 lighter than it was. Sure it will show back up in up to 7 business days... but it's something you should keep an eye on. Apparently, it's cool for gas stations to jack your account for over $70 if you just want to pump $13.00 worth of fuel. Anyone else run into this? There should be a thread dedicated to places where you shouldn't use your payoneer card (or debit card, in most cases). Maybe I'm just being a n00b but damnit... I could kick some ballz right now.

$75?! FUCK!!! That's terrible, Caz. Sorry to hear that!

I had signed up for that iMesh music downloading site a little while ago, and ended up with a bullshit pre-authorization charge in addition to the original fee I had paid for a few songs (songs I really wanted, but they weren't available in their 'free songs' section). I stopped using it after that. I'm already having MediaFire automatically withdraw money from my account every month (for sending videos to guys on MFC), so I wanna avoid having anymore money automatically deducted from me. And let's not forget that Payoneer's got a lot of fees.

^^^ actually, a $75 or even $100 temporary charge at the gas pump is standard procedure for all US based credit / debit cards. The 'difference' versus the actual gasoline purchase amount will be cancelled after the charges clear. What complicates the issue is that US based credit / debit card companies add an extra charge to transfer money across the US border if the bank backing the credit / debit card account is located outside of the USA. This isn't 'particular' to Payoneer ... it's true for all US based credit / debit cards.

Also, you can avoid the temporary charge by going inside the gas station and pre-paying for a particular amount of gasoline. That way the credit card companies don't need to 'pre-approve' enough money to potentially fill the tank on a monster truck / RV etc. !

I ran into it a while ago with my debit card. Now I usually go inside and pre-pay for gas using my pin number. I only pay at the pump now if I need to fill up and know I have enough on the card that if they pre-authorize it I won't overdraft

Usually that fee is associated with debit I have come to notice so I always use my card as a credit card when paying at the pump.

Even if you use your card as a credit transaction, you will see pre authorization charges from gas stations.

You did NOT get *jacked up*, this is normal across the board at any gas station you go to, that if you pay at the pump, they will tap your card and place a hold on it for a pre determined amount (some gas stations in the state I live only put a $1 hold on the card!) to make sure that your card is valid and that you have more than enough money to pump gas. As others have said here, and I do this as well, go INTO the gas station and tell them how much you want charged on your card instead of doing it at the pump. The convenience is going to cost you.

Think of it like a guy coming into your paid video and the site didn't know how long he was going to stay or how much he may end up spending..a lot of sites (I know iFriends does this) will tap the card for $50 I believe to make sure the card is good and that the person has some money on it. Think about the merchant (the gas station) if you go and pump $60 worth of gas but only have $20 on your debit card and then they are out the $40 while they chase you down and try to get that money. They are only protecting themselves, and rightly so.

You will also see this type of charge if you go to a club or bar and open a tab to buy drinks. The club will actually hit your card with a charge to make sure you actually have money on the card to pay for those drinks! LOL

Nothing is unusual about this or even wrong in my opinion, and there are ways around it so you don't have $75 tied up for days.

This has happened to me with almost all my cards.

Try several stations. My local shell never does the preauthorization so I try to stick with them. When you find one that doesn't try your best to always fill up at that one.

As many have pointed out, this is something that occurs with any credit/debit card you use to "pay at the pump", not only Payoneer. There should be some kind of alert or notice on the pump itself that shows you how much the pre-authorization charge will be.

If you go inside to pay directly at the cashier, there won't be a pre-auth charge.

That isn't too bad. Pretty normal. i had an 750 pre-auth in December at a gas station on my AmEx. i wanted to smack them.

Next time pay inside. it's the only way around it.

In my area, there usually is a sign on or near the pump stating the amount of authorization (I always interpreted the sign as total authorization instead of auth. overage). Norm is $75 for Visa/MC/AMEX or $50 for Disc., though I expect that to go up to match the others, as the price of gas has risen.

Whoa, that's pretty high..perhaps their processor entered one too many zeros? Unless they assume everyone is driving one of these:

In my experience every person I've talked to at a gas station around here anyway told me that they pre auth $1 with a credit card and around 75-100 with a debit card. I have found this to be true as when I've used my card as credit the highest pre auth I get is $1 but with debit i've gotten a 75 dollar pre auth charge...
