    Search Seeking a city ...

I'm graduating from college in May and my current favorite hobby is daydreaming about where I could live after graduation. I want to live in a city where it is warm essentially year round that is fairly liberal. Potentially with guys who will have sexy southern accents. I know this is lame but please entertain my post-grad fantasies with suggestions!

I think it'd be hard to have warm and liberal and country accents. Maybe give up liberal? Then Lexington, KY would work, or Nashville, TN. Or give up country accent and you can get anywhere in new Mexico or Florida or southern California. Or give up warm and you get Denver, Co or Seattle.

    That's my experience anyway. :-)

I wouldn't recommend moving to New Orleans (too dangerous) or Baton Rouge (getting more ghetto) but the boys who come out of there are amazing. The accents are to die for, and most of them know how to cook and treat a girl.

I agree with Atlanta and Nashville, maybe Knoxville as well? I've always loved Charlotte, NC.. look into Charleston, SC too. Or maybe even Savannah, GA.

Seattle men suck by the way, just so you know. They aren't very cute, mostly hipsters, and a lot of them are really snotty.

Midtown ATL is a total trip. Lots of good restaurants down there too.

    Austin, Tx?

    Santa Fe, NM?

search any city you think you might like + Baptist. If you find a large number of Baptists in said city in proportion to the population. Cross it off the list.

Ooh Nashville sounds awesome, thanks! I love Denver but I am seeking sun.

Thanks! I usually like a handsome hipster but I do NOT like snobbishness.

Thanks everyone for letting me sponge off of their life experiences, anyone ever lived in Texas?

I lived in Austin almost a year. It's pretty cool, but feels small quickly. AND HOLY FUCKING CHRIST IS IT HOT. Easily the hottest, most humid place I ever lived... lots of days over 100 degrees in summertime.

As for the snobbiness up here.. the hipsters up here call begging and street music "busking", if that gives you any insight. I rolled my eyes so hard when I heard that one.

I've loved living in NOLA for 13 years. There is violent crime, but I won't let that scare me from a city I love - many U.S. cities have this risk.

It's certainly warm enough. The weather is amazing right now. It's been in the 60s and 70s for weeks, and we hardly had any days below 50 F since the year began. Nights can get chilly, but not freezing.

The French Quarter, Marigny, and Bywater neighborhoods are extremely liberal. The city has it's own unique personality, and most people here feel free to just "do them".

I don't know what you're studying in school, but the job market here can be a little rough, depending on the industry. Cost of living has been going up significantly during the past decade or so, but it's still fairly inexpensive compared to most major U.S. cities.

They're using that word around here too. I think the newer generation of crusty street kids has been popularizing that term for a few years. Most of these kids travel around the country, and cities like NOLA, Austin, Seattle, S.F., Asheville, etc. are all on their circuit, so I don't think their terminology is particularly local.

I agree with everything you said. I'd move back in a heartbeat if we could, but hub's career is now pretty deeply rooted here. I've been homesick for over a year now. The only thing is I feel like people who are not familiar with riskier cities (and NOLA is a riskier city) can go in pretty naive. I had a few disasters with my sister when she lived with us.

Thank you! I am from Philadelphia and have lived/ stayed in some areas that people consider sketchy so I'm not as naive as some but still something to consider.

This thread makes me want to move to New Orleans..!

Can't say I'd recommend Boston. Although this winter was like a dream, the accent isn't as forgivable

I'm from Texas and I think Austin is pretty beautiful. I think most of its inhabitants are dumb as fuck though. It's the flocking ground for my generation (22, high school class of '08, the literate ones are graduating this year or the next.) The "Keep Austin Weird!' movement is just annoying. Most people are varying degrees of hip and wearing Toms. I knew a guy who had a group of winner friends who rented a flat together and didn't believe in work, so they just asked people on the streets for money. Meanwhile, their parents were paying their tuition at UT. Idk. It just seems to be this place where younger people go and don't ever want to grow the fuck up. They pride themselves on being the anti-Texas while located in Texas. Oh, how ironic and interesting! Also, Austin is pretty spread out, even for being a city. That and the heat makes trying to walk/bike (oh, yeah, biking + hills, btw--my ass hurts even thinking about it) a challenge if you're not used to Tx weather. Yeah, there are some great parks, food places, museums, etc, but it's basically like one huge Montrose (Houston hipster area). I love to go to Austin for day trips and get a drink and walk around, but when I had to live there, I became an alcoholic shut-in who had a habit of telling pretentious assholes thirty-two reasons why they should throw themselves under the next approaching bus.

Consider this a vote for Asheville, NC. Really, really pretty and a good place for a 22 year old. Hipsters? Yes, but not too bad. A lot of history and if you are into the outdoors and the arts it is a fun place. You have Charlotte, Atlanta, and Winston-Salem Greensboro nearby. If you want a big city go to Atlanta or Charlotte – very similar, Charlotte being the mini version.
