I just quickly skimmed the other posts so forgive me if I'm repeating stuff.
I always had really nice skin until a couple years ago. And then it broke out terribly, Like, those really deep and painful cystic bumps. The only thing that totally cleared it up was going to a doctor but there were some things that helped. Instead of washing my face with soap/facial cleanser/Cetaphil, I just use make remover. I found that I was unable to remove all of my make up (especially all the concealer I use for camming) from just facial cleanser and scrubbing--even with a $200 Clarsonic. And exfoliating more than 2x a month just made my skin worse. I use those pre-moistened make up remover wipes and they're the only thing I've found that will take off all traces of my make up. Plus they don't irritate and dry out my skin like foaming cleansers did.
Also, I like to use a silicone based primer under my make up--it helps my make up last longer and it keeps my make up from settling in my pores.
I have to make sure I either thoroughly wash all my make up brushes about once a week, have multiple brushes so I can switch them out or use disposable ones. I change my pillow cases frequently too.
My skin is really sensitive and although it's acne prone, it's also really dry. I have to use oil free moisturizers, I've tried using natural oils and I still break out. I literally tried almost every drug store brand of oil free moisturizer and none hydrated my skin enough. I was using Peter Thomas Roth Sheer Moisture (something like that) but it was really expensive. Now, I just buy vitamin E capsules, pop them open and use that on my skin as moisturizer. Make sure you use the capsules. A lot of the vitamin E oil they sell specifically to use on your skin contains mineral oil.
