I just quickly skimmed the other posts so forgive me if I'm repeating stuff.

I always had really nice skin until a couple years ago. And then it broke out terribly, Like, those really deep and painful cystic bumps. The only thing that totally cleared it up was going to a doctor but there were some things that helped. Instead of washing my face with soap/facial cleanser/Cetaphil, I just use make remover. I found that I was unable to remove all of my make up (especially all the concealer I use for camming) from just facial cleanser and scrubbing--even with a $200 Clarsonic. And exfoliating more than 2x a month just made my skin worse. I use those pre-moistened make up remover wipes and they're the only thing I've found that will take off all traces of my make up. Plus they don't irritate and dry out my skin like foaming cleansers did.

Also, I like to use a silicone based primer under my make up--it helps my make up last longer and it keeps my make up from settling in my pores.

I have to make sure I either thoroughly wash all my make up brushes about once a week, have multiple brushes so I can switch them out or use disposable ones. I change my pillow cases frequently too.

My skin is really sensitive and although it's acne prone, it's also really dry. I have to use oil free moisturizers, I've tried using natural oils and I still break out. I literally tried almost every drug store brand of oil free moisturizer and none hydrated my skin enough. I was using Peter Thomas Roth Sheer Moisture (something like that) but it was really expensive. Now, I just buy vitamin E capsules, pop them open and use that on my skin as moisturizer. Make sure you use the capsules. A lot of the vitamin E oil they sell specifically to use on your skin contains mineral oil.

This will always be my favorite makeup. It fights acne, while making my skin look pretty.

I must admit though, I haven't been using makeup anymore since I was 17... But I swear by this. I used it everyday, and it worked! I'm planning on using it again though, cause I'm having some oily skin issues. The price is worth it.

I find that so many doctors are really quick to dismiss my concerns of side effects. Not all though, my dermatologist told me she didn't prescribe Accutane to any woman within child bearing age because the risk was too great. I generally don't trust doctors all that much to begin with. I've had some bad experiences and I have quite a few in laws that are doctors and almost all of them are pompous asses with god complexes who I wouldn't really want to trust with my life. They might read a paragraph of information about a certain drug or class of drug while in med school and that's the only education they get on it. I've met many drug addicts who know more about the effects of drugs on the human body than the average MD.

My best friend in high school and my sister in law (not the MD) have both been on Accutane. Anyway, when my friend took it, his skin dried up so badly. His lips were always cracked and peeling and the skin around his nose and at the corners of his mouth would crack open. It looked really uncomfortable. My sister in law had similar problems with dryness and then when she came off of it, her skin was improved but not great. She still has a problem with the painful cystic bumps around her jawline.

I'm on a combination of Retin-A and Duac (clindamycin and benzyl peroxide) and I love it. I've been on it almost a year now and my skin looks great. I actually only use it a couple times a week now. I've been on this combination on and off since high school (I mentioned above that my skin just recently broke out badly but I was on it previously just because I always felt my skin could look better so why not?). I've been on both Minocyclin and Doxycycline before and they work well but once my skin cleared up, my doctor would usually just stop the oral antibiotics and stick with the topical.

I've found that I have to use ridiculously small amounts of Retin-A for my skin to tolerate it. Like, less than a pea sized amount to cover my face and neck. I also can't use any kind of foaming cleanser or medicated lotion or anything really besides water or make up remover to wash my face and moisturizer/vitamin E. But there are other things that aren't quite as harsh that are similar like Differin and Finacia. I've used both but they didn't work quite as well for me as Retin-A but they still worked.

IMO, I would ask your doctor about adding something like Differin to your current combo if you find it's not working before going to something like Accutane. If the dryness and peeling bothered you on Retin-A, from what I've seen Accutane looks worse. Both people I know who have been on it, though they didn't have life altering side effects, had severe enough dryness that their skin would crack and bleed. It looked terribly uncomfortable.
