Default I'm on the Chexsystems List...Can I get a bank account elsewhere?

I was placed on the Chexsystems list about a year ago. I know this means you will have a hard time opening a bank account anywhere. Does anyone know of any Banks in Minnesota that will allow you to open an account with them even if you are on it? I keep searching online but can not find anything...

I had my account closed for sitting to long in a negative state. I paid off the balance but the bank I was with (Wells Fargo...) would not take my name off the list...

this will be an uphill battle, as every large corporate bank requires a Chex Systems 'blessing' before allowing new accounts to be opened. Local credit unions, and maybe local only banks, may be a bit more amenable.

If you have paid off the item there is two things you can do...

    1. Provide documentation to the new bank that the amount it has been paid off. Alot of banks and financial institutions have a second chance policy as long as you can prove it has been paid off. If you don't have documentation, go back to the original bank and request a letter. If it is a letter, make sure that banker that signs it, also includes their phone number. The new bank likes to call to verify letters.

    2. Dispute the item with Chexsystems. Yes you can do this..

"You have the same right to dispute information on your ChexSystems report that you do with a credit report. That means that the firm has to follow the dispute provisions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, or FCRA. If you are turned down for a checking account, ChexSystems will provide you with a free copy of your consumer report within 60 days of that action if the financial institution pulled your ChexSystems report as part of its decision-making process. You are also eligible to get a free copy once a year under the provisions of the Fair and Accurate Credit Reporting Act of 2003. The Consumer Debit Resource site's FAQ page explains all of this in greater detail."

I know at Bank of America, if your account is closed for sitting negative too long over a certain amount, the report stays on chexsystems even if it is paid off, and chexsystems is allowed to keep it on file. I believe it's if the amount is over $300. I would try to open an account with a credit union, and then after you've had that for a while, perhaps a national bank again if you want to.

I finally found Chexsystems actual website. It is so difficult to find ugh ...

How long does the report stay on file? How do I get it deleted?

Each report submitted to ChexSystems remains on our files for five years, unless the source of the information requests its removal or ChexSystems becomes obligated to remove it under applicable law.

My account was paid. Why wasn't the report removed?

A reporting member is under no obligation to remove an accurate report of account mishandling due to payment of monies owed. However, the member is obligated to update the report with a paid in full or settled in full date when applicable.

Thanks everyone. I do not have Chase Bank near me. I was able to open up an account with USAA though. They let you have civilian accounts.
