    Default computer quesion

I find much info here and elsewhere about cams and other eqiopment, but need input for PC. To run a good cam, and MFC software, flash, etc.. what specs are needed for a good laptop? Or, if not specs, what do you use that works well for you?
    Thanks so much!

Well, I am no PC expert but to run the HD encoder on SM which appears to be the most bothersome of some camgirls routine, etc., You need to have windows 7, a good upload speed, (check SM's indications), You have to use the mozilla firefox browser and a decent webcam. The Logitech 9000 is what most of us are using although I am using the Logitech c270 HD which is a cheap version that actually does the job but not as well. I need to upgrade. If u have a new PC u should be ok to start. Always find ways to upgrade in regard to the viewing picture for the customer and also the ease of controlling your cam, such as possibly using a camcorder with a remote etc. I am trying to decide what to upgrade to myself. The better your picture, audio and angles, the more $$$ u will make.

the link to the older thread failed. But in general, to have a shot at SM HD, you need something in the following ballpark ...

dual core processor ( quad core is better ) running at 2.4ghz ( higher is better )
    4gb memory ( 6gb is better )
A USB 3.0 rated port ( 5 x faster than USB 2.0 for transferring video from the camera to the PC )
    Windows 7 running Firebox helps
an ISP that can actually provide a 1 meg+ UPLOAD speed ( 3 megs is better )

Many notes about having windows 7, but keep in mind that windows vista and windows 7 can be INTENSE memory hogs at their default settings. If you have a PC with either, you'll want to neuter the graphics and such or the OS alone will be using an absolute ton of memory.

Most people have computers that only have USB 2.0 ports. You can use a USB 3.0 device with the USB 2.0 port and cord but it will only run at USB 2.0 speed. There is difference in the USB 3.0 plugs that allow for the faster speed. Your mother board would need the USB 3.0 port to pass the faster speed..and the "super-speed" cable (USB 3.0). There are USB 3.0 "adapter" cards out that plug into PCIe x1 slots in your mother board. I have yet to put USB 3.0 ports in my computer for a few different reasons; I don't think my motherboard supports the option, getting a pci card that supports USB 3 is essentially useless as it will run usb 3 protocols but at usb 2 speeds, and furthermore I don't know of a capture device for my Sony EviD100 that uses USB 3.

Also most of you common webcams are USB 2.0. There are some really cool usb 3 webcams out there, but I don't think they are sold as common webcams in stores yet. You would have to order them online. I could be wrong, but I personally have not seen any in my local Future shop or even Computers Canada.

I am not saying you should not go with USB 3.0 ports, I do think the potential and the future is there, just that usb 3 has not been heavily adopted as of yet. Its now 2012 and I am sure over the next year or so we will be seeing more usb 3 use, but until then I am not upgrading.

In any event I disagree that you "need" USB 3.0 ports. You may in a year or two from now, but for now your USB 2.0 ports should be fine.

lmao people really dont understand computers.....those specs are way high....the reason you need speeds like that are because the computer is bogged down with programs....trust me i was on the first page of SM using 1 gig of Ram/ Windows ME / and less than an HD cam.....Its not exactly the computer ....its HOW you use it.

Could not agree with you more! I used my last macbook pro which had a dual core processor, standard definition webcam, and 2 gig of ram and still made the first page myself. However my CPU usage while running the encoder was like 85% and I think that had mostly to do with the amount of "junk" on the computer as it was my one and only at the time. I had that thing for 5 years.

I don't mean to threadjack, but I'm curious how many rows you guys are considering first page on SM, I keep meaning to ask this but alas always forget. A long time ago I put SM to 100 per page, so I don't know what the default was.

Since the OP was asking about specs for a NEW laptop ... which she will presumably want to keep using for several years ... I'm still standing behind the specs I posted.

The trend with webcam hosts is to 'push' camgirls into running encoder software on their own computers as a bandwidth cost saving measure. Encoder software is actually doing two 'intensive' tasks, compressing the raw camera video stream, and acting as a 'self-contained' video server. This is accomplished far more easily with a dual core processor.

Memory management is, as others have already commented, a 'whole nuther story'. With less than 4gb you better know what you are doing setting up your system to use minimum memory ... because once your computer starts paging to virtual memory via HDD your video stream is guaranteed to 'burp'. Encoder software also provides a higher demand for memory.

As to USB 3.0, I'm standing behind this 100% for any new laptop. Yes there are external video capture cards available to convert analog camera video via USB 3.0 that are significantly 'faster'. There are also USB 3.0 HD cameras available right now, granted that they are not yet widespread. And it's virtually guaranteed that the next generation of 'mass market' digital webcams are going to shift to USB 3.0. Logitech has more or less admitted that their cameras have now exceeded the capacity of USB 2.0 with the C920 ( which incorporates self-contained but inflexible hardware based H.264 video compression right in the camera to try and 'cram' more video info through a USB 2.0 port ).
